The first known suicide directly attributable to Covid-19

Quote:

Top Manhattan ER Doctor Commits Suicide After Treating Coronavirus Patients

In a shocking example of the psychic toll that those fighting on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak endure, a top emergency room doctor who treated coronavirus patients at a hospital in Manhattan has committed suicide, the New York Times reports.

Dr. Lorna M. Breen, the medical director of the emergency department at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, died in Virginia on Sunday, where she was staying with family, according to her father who discussed her death with the Times.

Her father said she had described to him "devastating scenes of the toll the coronavirus took on patients," the NYT reported.

"She tried to do her job, and it killed her," he said.

Breen's father, also an MD, said his daughter had contracted the virus, but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. Then, the hospital sent her home again, but at this point her family moved to bring her back to Charlottesville, Va.

Breen, 49, had no history of mental illness, but when she last spoke with her father, she reportedly described a horrifying onslaught of patients found DOA in ambulances, all of them COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Breen

Her father asked the NYT to "make sure [Breen] is treated like a hero," since she died doing her job and protecting this country from a devastating health care epidemic.

"She was truly in the trenches of the front line," he said. "She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died."

Dr. Lawrence A. Melniker, the vice chair for quality care at the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, told the NYT that Dr. Breen was well-respected and well-liked in their hospital system.

"You don’t get to a position like that at Allen without being very talented," he said.

The coronavirus has presented unusual mental health challenges for emergency physicians throughout New York, the epicenter of the crisis in the United States. As the paper added, while ER doctors are inured to treating patients will all kinds of grisly injuries, they're not accustomed to being at risk of infection themselves, or of passing it to their colleagues.

There were hundreds on hundreds of deaths every day in hospitals in NYC. I estimated about 70 a day in each hospital on average. That's one code ending in death every 20 minutes, day and night, every day, for weeks.

That's not to mention the over a thousand admissions every day per hospital.

Or the unknown number of DOAs flooding in by ambulance.

I imagine there will be a lot of EMTs and paramedics, doctors, nurses, and aides who'll be subject to suicide in the short-term.

I imagine a far greater number will have PTSD and be subject to suicide in the long-term.

I imagine the anesthesiologists who intubated a lot of people at great risk to themselves, if they find out later intubation was not only not helpful, it might have been harmful.

A local Nurse's story. There is a Nurse who lives a few blocks away. We got to speak to her by chance. Haven't seen her in a long time. Asked how she was doing, and she responded with tears in her eyes. She said she is overwhelmed by the hours she puts in. Her main location is PIH, where she does a 12 hr. day. She said she is often called to help out at other Hospitals, which she is committed to help other health professionals. She said she often works close to a full day with only minimal breaks. We found out that reports of cases is not talked about because the priority is to try to save lives. She said she's had to use her same mask for weeks. She takes it off, and puts its in a plastic bag, and uses it again the next day. She's exhausted. Just listening to her makes you cry. We only hear how bad it is for them in the news, but to actually hear how bad it is in reality, gives a whole new insight into the suffering, on both sides. Thank you to all the health professionals, first responder for your beautiful commitment to save others. Bless you all.

This will be like many of our recent, endless wars that chew up Americans, to be disposed later, quietly, one by one. Out of sight, out of mind.

If you weren't there, if you didn't know someone personally who it affected, it's just another story about someone else that's not real.

Your suggestions were call them (which I do) and drive down to my brother (which I can't).

My offer for him to live here temporarily is always on the table. They were going to do it and then all of the sudden they got cold feet about it. They're afraid that he can't go back to his place if things get even worse and more locked down in Illinois. His building is nearly all senior citizens outside of him and a few other younger people with disabilities.

It probably wouldn't help him too much if he was here. At least I could make sure he wasn't going to start drinking, but he still can't go to church or really do anything. It would make the old man feel better though.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That's your careless reading again. I made a ton of suggestions that don't involve YOU calling them to chit-chat, or driving there.

And get other relatives to call him OFTEN.
Ask him who's in his church group.
Get THEM to call him OFTEN.
Be observant and proactive. If there's something that he's not doing now that he used to do, find a way to make it happen in some fashion.
Get him out of the house.
Read his favorite bible passages over the phone.

Yes, it'll take time and effort. You may need to go WAY out of your comfort zone and spend a HUGE amount of time and effort.

You'll need to call your relatives and get them on board.
You'll need to suss out his church. You'll need to suss out those people. You'll need to get THEM on board to call him and establish regular, reliable contact - something he can count on, besides you. (ETA: as long as they don't try and cheer him out of his rut, or try to keep up an endlessly cheery facade with the expectation he'll join them. Their conversations should engage him in immediate things that are not COVID.)
If he has a doctor/ neurologist/ psychologist/ psychiatrist you might let them know what's going on. There's always a chance his depression is partially neurology-driven and so you might be fighting against the tide without medical help.
If he's drinking, how is he getting his alcohol? Stinkin' thinkin' and drinkin' can lead him to attempt suicide. It sounds like he's in an assisted care residence. Can you find a way to interrupt the drinkin' by finding out how he's getting it? Can you enlist the residence? Because they may be able to interrupt the drinkin'.
What can he do outside of his dwelling? Does he have a hobby or interest that can take him out of his depressed rut?
Does he have a reliable routine? Can you encourage that? I remember a friend talking to his mother every day when she was depressed. : Ma, did you take your medicine? Did you eat breakfast? How are you doing for food? Tell me, what's in your frig. Did you talk with (relative) today yet? Oh really?! How's she doing? : Being depressed often means you give up on regular daily at-home routines. Reestablishing them can help.

I have far more experience with that situation than I've posted about because (for the most part) I don't intrude on other people's privacy. If I posted about my experiences, I'd be posting about those people, too, which I almost never do (as you may have noticed). But there are things you can do to help. You can't guarantee results, but you can do whatever is in your power, and there's a lot of options.

He doesn't have a routine now. I can tell that it's bad because he says even though he tries to go to sleep by 3AM he's staying up until 6 to 7AM a lot of the nights and some nights he's not even going to sleep. I told him that he's got to make a routine for himself, even if it's nothing more than taking a shower at the same time every morning just to have something to latch onto. I tell him this is all going to be over eventually and he's not doing himself any favors trashing his health in the mean time.

He's an adult. He's quite capable of doing a lot of things on his own. He's no stranger to walking 5 miles round trip to buy necessities (since he can't legally drive). Taking a 3 minute walk to the liquor store would be child's play to him if he went down that road.

I'd mentioned to the old man yesterday that I wasn't sure if he was aware of the new order keeping shit closed until June 1st now in his state, and that I didn't want to be the one to bring it up to him especially since he sounded in good spirits when I talked to him. Turns out I was right. My dad let him know.

I called him just a while ago when I wrapped up my work for the day and I haven't heard him sound that bad in a very long time.

I called my dad back and let him know that the offer to live here for a while is still on the table. I think it's going to happen this time.

I'm not his church group, and I don't go out much myself, but maybe having somebody to watch TV with at night will be enough for him. We always have a good time when he's in for a week or so around Christmas. And by the time he comes here the master bedroom will be done and he'll have a legit bedroom to sleep in.

Maybe I can even get him to give me a hand and learn a thing or two while he's here. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Ezra Klein asked:

I was looking back at a paper you published in 2015 about preparing for pandemics. And the point you made there that was telling: We are constantly rehearsing for war against an enemy of another country. We’re constantly rehearsing as part of NATO or US military war games.

Pandemics are a well-known thing, they’ve happened throughout history. We knew one was going to come eventually. And we were not doing these pre-rehearsals. Why do you think it is that we are so much more focused on threats from each other than threats that come from nature?

Bill Gates answered:

I think part of it is that the minor epidemics we had really didn’t hit the US. If you look at the Asian countries that did well, many of them wrote down: step one, identify all PCR machines. [Polymerase chain reaction machines, used by laboratories to copy small segments of DNA.] Step two: get supplies for PCR machines. We haven’t done that in a reasonable way today, even though we have more machines per capita than anybody else.

Places like Taiwan or South Korea, because they were hit with MERS or SARS, had the playbook. They opened the playbook, they went through those steps, and it’s saved them 10 percent of GDP and immense human suffering that they took respiratory disease in a serious way.

The fact that a novel infectious disease hasn’t been in this country for so long allowed us to not think about it as a priority. I wish I’d been more successful in getting these investments made in advance. I think back: How could I have been louder, more articulate? Very little was done.

Bill Gates gets published in The New England Journal of Medicine, April 9, 2015,
"The Next Epidemic — Lessons from Ebola"
www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp1502918
"An epidemic is one of the few catastrophes that could set the world back drastically in the next few decades. By building a global warning and response system, we can prepare for it and prevent millions of deaths."

Saskatchewan will be the first Canadian province to slowly reopen.

Next will probably be BC around the middle of May. That's what Dr. Bonnie is saying. BC only had 11 new cases over a 24 hour period that was from Sunday to Monday. Hospitalizations are down as is ICU cases.

Quebec and Ontario are also looking at when certain sectors can open there. But I wouldn't expect much until maybe June. Ontario might in May. Things seem to have stabalized back there. Fingers crossed.

Yeah, me neither. Bill has invested heavily in vaccines and seed storage. Seems like he wants to be the guy in control during, and after, the apocalypse.

Some of Bill's vaccination efforts have led to serious widespread side effects, like his "flu" vaccine trial in the Philippines that caused so many spontaneous abortions and long-term infertility that many were speculating that the REAL purpose of the vaccine was to prevent childbearing, or the polio vaccine in India that left tens of thousands of kids with acute non-polio flaccid paralysis. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6121585/

Fingers crossed.

News tonight Quebec has some dates for things to reopen in May. From the 4th to the 9th, retail, I think they said but only those shops that are on the street. All malls province wide are still closed. Also this is for Montreal. Then the 11th a few more things and outside Montreal. All of this of course will be closely monitored by Quebec's health officer.

Ontario has no dates yet and still looking at what can open. Don't blame either premier as both provinces took a bad hit from this virus. Also Doug Ford the premier of Ontario, his family too. His mother-in-law has contracted it.

As for BC, Dr. Bonnie is watching everything like a hawk, so we don't have any massive spikes.

Trump signaled Tuesday that he’s looking to condition coronavirus economic relief for blue states on complying with the administration’s immigration policy goals.

In remarks to reporters at a White House event with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Trump said he’d be willing to give economic aid to Democratically controlled state governments, but he wants them to do something for him first — bend their sanctuary city policies to align with the administration’s desired policy.

Trump said he was only open to helping some states financially cover losses related to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I think there’s a big difference with a state that lost money because of Covid and a state that’s been run very badly for 25 years,” he said.

He then mentioned sates with sanctuary city policies.

“We’d have to talk about things like sanctuary cities, as an example. I think sanctuary cities is something that has to be brought up where people who are criminals are protected, they are protected from prosecution,” he told reporters, despite sanctuary city policies having nothing to do with the pandemic. “I think that has to be done. I think it’s one of the problems that the states have. I don’t even think they know they have a problem, but they have a big problem with the sanctuary situation.”

Later in the day, Trump reiterated his sanctuary city comments while taking questions from reporters at an East Room event to promote the success of the Payroll Protection Program. “If it’s Covid-related, I guess we can talk about [aid], but we’d want certain things also, including sanctuary city adjustments,” he said.

You also should read articles before you post them. This was in the middle of the article you linked.

Even though Trump's approval ratings concerning how he has handled the country's response to the coronavirus have dropped, those surveyed still believed he would win a second term as president. While 43.3 percent of participants in the poll believed Biden would win the election, 56.7 percent believed Trump would emerge the victor.

"China will do anything they can to have me lose this race," Trump said. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded that the country had "no interest" in interfering in internal US affairs. "For some time, certain US politicians, in disregard of the facts, have attempted to shift their own responsibility for their poor handling of the epidemic to others," a ministry spokesman, Geng Shuang, said.

Trump received 48.18% to Hillary's 47.46% in Pennsylvania, but Trump got 100% (equal to 20 votes) in the electoral college. It appears that the Founding Fathers never understood a run-off election when nobody gets 50%. In a run-off Trump would lose.

That's why Trump is President -- the Founding Fathers weren't that good at drafting a Constitution.

Hi. Just checking in. 5 more years of Trump, LOL. We barely survived 3. Another term and we go full-on Nazi. Pretty close as it is now. I'll check back in a few if Trump loses. If not we're all dead or dying in which case I won't.

Yes. I know exactly what he means. Like three years of hearing that the poor handling of Hillary's campaign was really just Putin hackin' muh elections.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Sounds like poor sportsmanship and a giant misunderstanding about how our country has worked for going on almost 250 years now.

Also sounds like that's your problem.

My favorite example of how America does NOT work well is the 13th Amendment (ends slavery). A million people had to die to get it passed. Is a million dead anybody's idea of working well? Especially since other countries ended slavery without Civil Wars?

One more example of NOT working well: the 14th Amendment was intended to only make former slaves into new US citizens, but what it really did was to also make the children of illegal aliens US citizens. Republicans have been complaining for two centuries that Mexicans sneak into the US to give birth.

6ix, if you actually knew any true history, or even if you paid attention to what bonehead Trump is doing about Covid-19 compared to what S Korea or Taiwan are doing, you won't dare claim the US works well.

When did I say anything about it working well? Not just in my last reply, but in the entire post history I've had here.

I'd REALLY love to see evidence of that.

No...

I was simply making commentary on how much you bitch and whine when established rules don't work your way, but when you do have a chance to do something about it you don't.

I guess now is the time where I ask you for the 100th time where was Obama on the Electoral College the first two years of his presidency?

The answer to that question, of course, is he did not bring it up one single time during his presidency. Not once.

And we listened to you bitch and whine about it when Trump won in 2016. And we're going to here you bitch and whine about it when Trump wins again in November.

And then in 2024, assuming that Democrats don't really screw the pooch and somehow make it the first time that a single party had more than 8 years in my lifetime, Democrats will have control again and nobody is going to bring it up.

Because Democrats are fucking weirdos and crybabies that don't actually get anything done and wouldn't even recognize themselves in the mirror if they woke up one day and didn't have anything to bitch and whine about.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Also today BC reached 100 days since the province was first notified of the virus.

A health officer with a fan club? Meet Canada’s Dr. Bonnie.

Yes, she does. Poor woman gets so embarrassed when she's praised for her good job of handling this crisis. She's had her hair mentioned and she addressed that at a briefing because it looked different. There has been a song written for her.

Coronavirus dashboard for April 30: the US has the worst record in the world, by far

The US leads the world by far in new infections (including per capita) and deaths; and is second among significant sized countries only to Spain among total cases per capita; while several other countries, including developing country Vietnam, have brought their caseloads to zero. This is abject failure on a horrid scale.

The total US population remains under total lockdown has declined substantially due mainly to the renegade States in the Confederacy.

Number of new and total reported Infections:
Number: South Korea: ZERO (4 detected from incoming flights at airport)
Number: Taiwan: ZERO
Number: Vietnam: ZERO

It is funny how Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam don't have the turmoil fighting Covid-19 like America has. Something very inexplicable about that, but forget about it and Vote For Trump, our self-proclaimed Very Stable Genius.

6ix, you are the guy who demands human sacrifices for Trump's reelection. The inner logic of your thread "In Memoriam of the 156,154 people who died" is that no matter how many small people die it is of no importance so long as Big Man Trump survives. You have got a Mein Führer Complex.

Congressional Democrats are governing from the minority. Congressional Republicans don’t want the federal government to work and Democrats do.

Typically, in a crisis, the administration would be pushing to do more, do it faster, and the minority party would be deciding whether to block those efforts or attach their own ideological priorities onto them. That’s because the administration knows it will be blamed for failure. But the Trump administration has refused responsibility for the Covid-19 crisis, and it has repeatedly wanted both less funding and less authority than congressional Democrats want to give it.

“It’s the executive branch who normally takes control in a situation like this, and they haven’t,” says Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI). “As a result, Democrats have stepped into the breach to minimize suffering. There are a lot of keyboard pundits who view this as a forfeiture of leverage, and I understand what they’re saying. But we have to be very clear: They’re talking about using suffering as leverage. That is what the Republicans do, not what we do.”

The result is that instead of acting like a minority party, Democrats are using much of their leverage to force Republicans to act like a majority party. Democrats are fighting for the policies that, if they work, Republicans will later take credit for. The testing program is a good example. Democrats forced the Trump administration to accept responsibility for a national testing strategy over the White House’s objections. But if the money and the strategy work, it’ll be Trump who runs on that success in November.

It is possible this case in Nunavut came from Northern Alberta. There's been an outbreak at an oil camp, and this person could have worked there but not having shown any symptoms was allowed to fly home. Then came up positive.

Oh interesting!

I hope they do well with contact tracing and quarantine for everyone downstream, that this doesn't get a toehold in any community, and that everyone does well.

That is just my theory since travel between provinces and territories is down to almost nil. It's the only thing I can think of.

The other oil camp workers who did test positive are in lockdown at the camp.

Communities that far north in Canada are small, so hopefully they will be alright and everyone this person travelled with should be notified and be in self-isolation for 14days.
