Missouri School District Asks Parents To Sign COVID-19 ‘Death Waiver’

Safety first? A Missouri school district is asking parents to sign a waiver to release the district from liability if their child dies or is injured from COVID-19 related causes.

I've been sober 3 years, 7 months and 15 days. That's sober from everything.

I quit smoking weed at least 2 years before I quit drinking.

I'm a pot advocate, but I'm not a pot head.

Even when I smoked every day, a $60 ounce lasted me nearly 3 months. Hardly Snoop Doggin' it.

My being smarter than everybody else problem isn't a weed problem. It's a being smarter than everybody else problem.

There’s no point in sugar-coating this. The U.S. response to the Covid-19 pandemic is a raging dumpster fire.

Where a number of countries in Asia and Europe have managed to dampen spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus to the point where they can consider returning to a semblance of normalcy — many international borders remain closed to Americans.

On Sunday, Florida reported more than 15,000 cases — in a single day. South Korea hasn’t registered 15,000 cases in the entire pandemic to date. One day last week the U.S. recorded more than 68,000 cases.

The website www.covidexitstrategy.org has updated its previously tri-colored U.S. map, which showed states as either green, signifying they are trending better; yellow, making progress; or red, trending poorly. A fourth designation, called “bruised red,” signals states with uncontrolled spread; criteria for this category includes hospitals nearing capacity both in terms of overall beds and ICU space. Already 17 states are wearing bruised red.

The virus suppression gains earned through the painful societal shutdowns of March, April, and May — the flattened epidemiological curves — have been squandered in many parts of the country, dejected public health experts agree. A vaccine for the masses is still months away. What can be done?

Pretty much.

When it comes to per capita 'new cases', the US is second only to South Africa.

When it comes to per capita 'new deaths', the US is behind such luminaries as Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Columbia, Guatemala, and Iraq, in that order. But at least we're just ahead of Sweden!

http://91-divoc.com/pages/covid-visualization/

We're in the sweet spot. We have all the first-world benefits that make us especially vulnerable: first-world 'lifestyle' risk factors like heart disease and age, plus the first-world benefits of reasonable transportation; but then we have a crap medical system and a corrupt, elite-protective political system that writes off mere peons, and that rivals any repressive plutocracy on the planet.

YAY US !!!

But there is a political factor that’s increasing both the reach and the deadliness of the pandemic. Because studies are now showing how right-wing media, including Fox News, has deliberately spread confusion, conflicting information, and outright lies about the pandemic. These sources downplayed the risk, spread a false sense of security, and encouraged viewers to disregard their personal safety even as hospitals—and morgues—were filling. The most astounding result: Both infection rates and mortality can be mapped to places where Sean Hannity is most popular.

Hannity has long been Donald Trump’s most reliable purveyor of unreliable information, and on the COVID-19 crisis Hannity has worked overtime. In the early days of the crisis, Hannity could be counted on to declare it was a hoax. When Trump was pushing hydroxychloroquine, Hannity was all over it as a miracle drug. When Trump started pushing to reopen, Hannity got out the crow bars to complain that the economy was more important than grandma. So it’s no surprise that Hannity viewers are the most confused about the nature of the pandemic—and more likely to die as a result.

Imperial College of London worst-case simulation came up with 2.2 million deaths by simply assuming that 81% of the population gets infected – 268 million people – and that 0.9% of them die. It did not assume health systems would have to be overwhelmed to result in so many deaths, though it did make that prediction. Neither the high infection rate nor the high fatality rate holds up under scrutiny.

The worst-case Imperial College estimate of 2.2 million deaths if everyone does “nothing” did not simply mean no government lockdowns. It meant nobody avoids crowded elevators, or wears face masks, washes their hands more often, or buys gloves or hand sanitizer. Everyone does literally nothing to avoid danger.

2.2 million dead is a small number in big country. For example, Gary Earl Johnson, Libertarian, got 4,489,341 votes in 2016. He literally had no chance of winning, but votes for him could have swung the election either way.

WTF?
second is agreeing with 6ix?

What is going on here?

Not actually agreeing with 6ix. Trump was bragging that the eventual number of deaths could be as high as 2.2 million and, therefore, everybody should be thanking Trump for saved lives. For example of how Trump does arithmetic: with 200,000 deaths, Trump would say he saved 2 million lives. When I do the total, Trump is an incompetent who killed 200,000. His final death total could have been more like Japan's 985.
www.google.com/search?q=japan+covid-19+death+toll

Japan has many of the conditions that make it vulnerable to Covid-19, but it never adopted the energetic approach to tackling the virus that some of its neighbours did. Japan had no lockdown, but it has an elderly population. Japan has fewer than 20,000 confirmed cases and fewer than 1,000 deaths. The state of emergency has been lifted, and life is rapidly returning to normal.

Trump did kill people with his ridiculously contradictory messages. Japan asked people to take care, stay away from crowded places, wear masks and wash their hands - and by and large, that is exactly what most people have done and the result is that only 985 died. Trump told people in his deeply confusing TV appearances on Coved-19 to do the opposite of Japan and the result is 141,000 died.

1kiki, if I was Republican, I could easily say that Japan had only 985 deaths, compared to 141,000 in America, because of a Mysterious X-Factor that only Asians have. Claiming X exists would exonerate Trump. It doesn't have to exist in reality in order to make Trump voters feel good in their heads about Trump. From the article www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53188847 :

Tokyo University professor Tatsuhiko Kodama - who studies how Japanese patients react to the virus - believes Japan may have had Covid before. Not Covid-19, but something similar that could have left behind "historical immunity".

He thinks it is possible a Sars-like virus has circulated in the region before, which may account for the low death rate, not just in Japan, but in much of China, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South East Asia.

This has been met with some scepticism.

"I am not sure how such a virus could be restricted to Asia," says Professor Kenji Shibuya, director of Public Health at Kings College, London and a former senior adviser to the government.

Professor Shibuya does not discount the possibility of regional differences in immunity or genetic susceptibility to Covid. But he is suspicious of the idea of a "Factor X" that explains the mortality differences.

More at www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-53188847

It is absolutely easy to excuse Trump's failures. "Factor X" works for Trump's Covid-19 fiasco. There are other "Factor X's" for other Trump fiascoes. Trump letting Nuclear Weapons Treaties lapse? He can get a better deal if he starts with a clean slate, which is why he let the treaties end. See how easy it is to explain away Trump failures? Trump cheating on his taxes? It is an attack on the Separation of Powers if Trump has to give his tax returns to Congress, despite him promising to publicize his taxes as soon as his IRS audit is completed. It is so very easy for Trump to handle any failure with a quick excuse.

There's a difference between a neutral dive into ALL the relevant facts in order to come closer to the truth ... as compared to your cherry-picking process in your post above, which is similar to the one that got us into Iraq. And how did that cherry-picking process work out?

Looking at all the facts v cherry-picking to support an agenda? One is better than the other.

And yet Cuomo's ~23% of old people dying of COVID-19 is roughly half the national average of 42%, and one fourth of DeWine's 82%. Cuomo should have tried harder to get even more old folks killed so the democrat shithole of NY that he runs could equal DeWine's republican paradise of Ohio.

Masks Off: How the Brothers Who Fueled the Reopen Protests Built a Volatile Far-Right Network

The emails played to fear. “Entire police departments are being overwhelmed by mobs of criminals bent on violence, robbery, arson, and more,” read one sent in June, as demonstrations against police brutality rocked the country. “Minnesotans have seen our peaceful streets turn violent overnight with riotous mobs,” read another, sent not long after the burning of Minneapolis’s Third Precinct. “Radical leftists … are looting in our streets, lighting buildings on fire, terrifying citizens, and murdering cops,” intoned a third. Antifa is in the streets, coming for your guns, and did you know that Nickelodeon is removing the police dog character from the hit toddler show “Paw Patrol?” (It isn’t.)

For right-wing fringe activist Ben Dorr, who sent the emails, outrage about Black Lives Matter was an easy pivot from another cause he’d been promoting. With his brothers Aaron, Chris, and Matthew, Ben Dorr helped launch protests to reopen states across the country shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic this spring. Alone or together, the four Dorr brothers started a slew of Facebook groups, joined by hundreds of thousands of members, that have helped to fuel skepticism about health precautions and pushed for states to open prematurely. In a country where the simple act of wearing a mask has become a political statement, the people who organize against masks are worth watching.

Before they began railing against public health measures, the brothers started gun rights and anti-abortion groups in multiple states, registering them as nonprofits and then paying out some of the money that they raise from donations to a for-profit direct mail company that they themselves control, according to IRS tax forms required to be filed by nonprofits.

Lancet editorial blasts Trump’s ‘inconsistent and incoherent’ coronavirus response
The unsigned editorial from the Lancet concluded that Trump should be replaced. “Americans must put a president in the White House come January, 2021, who will understand that public health should not be guided by partisan politics,” said the journal, which was founded in Britain in 1823.

Bullshit.

We all know what he means is that everybody should just do what Democrats want. There should be zero diversity of opinion. Obey.

Trump has avoided giving orders. If he can convince voters that it is not his responsibility, then he gets votes from people like 6ix. If he starts giving orders, he loses their vote:

Each morning at 8 as the coronavirus crisis was raging in April, Mark Meadows, the White House chief of staff, convened a small group of aides to steer the administration through what had become a public health, economic and political disaster.

Seated around Mr. Meadows’s conference table and on a couch in his office down the hall from the Oval Office, they saw their immediate role as practical problem solvers. Produce more ventilators. Find more personal protective equipment. Provide more testing.

But their ultimate goal was to shift responsibility for leading the fight against the pandemic from the White House to the states. They referred to this as “state authority handoff,” and it was at the heart of what would become at once a catastrophic policy blunder and an attempt to escape blame for a crisis that had engulfed the country — perhaps one of the greatest failures of presidential leadership in generations.

Over a critical period beginning in mid-April, President Trump and his team convinced themselves that the outbreak was fading, that they had given state governments all the resources they needed to contain its remaining “embers” and that it was time to ease up on the lockdown.

In doing so, he was ignoring warnings that the numbers would continue to drop only if social distancing was kept in place, rushing instead to restart the economy and tend to his battered re-election hopes.

Casting the decision in ideological terms, Mr. Meadows would tell people: “Only in Washington, D.C., do they think that they have the answer for all of America.”

I have seen how the governor of Texas handles Covid-19. I see he has no answers. He says don't blame me -- I'm not President, frequently. At least 25 other governors also have no answers.

The Republican governor of Maryland painted a damning portrait of the Trump administration's handling of the coronavirus. "I'd watched as the president downplayed the outbreak's severity and as the White House failed to issue public warnings, draw up a 50-state strategy, or dispatch medical gear or lifesaving ventilators from the national stockpile to American hospitals. Eventually, it was clear that waiting around for the president to run the nation's response was hopeless; if we delayed any longer, we'd be condemning more of our citizens to suffering and death. So every governor went their own way, which is how the United States ended up with such a patchwork response."

Stupid people don't know they're stupid, and they certainly don't realize how obvious it is to others.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Then DeWine did 4X too much, because he killed 4X as many old folks in his republican paradise as Cuomo did in his democratic shithole.
