A chief economist says Mitch McConnell expects Trump to lose the election — and breaks down why that means there will be no stimulus money until February.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell won't risk his position by forcing through a stimulus bill now, because he expects President Donald Trump to lose next month's election, Ian Shepherdson, the chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said in a webinar on Thursday.

To pass a big relief bill, Shepherdson said, McConnell would end up dividing his own party, since about 15 to 20 Republican Senators oppose a deal at or above $1.5 trillion.

But he ultimately wouldn't push Republicans to agree, because "splitting the party is death to the leader," Shepherdson said. He cited examples of the Republican leaders John Boehner and Paul Ryan, who also faced contentious splits within the GOP.

"There will be no bill of any size until after the inauguration," Shepherdson said. "Here we are, in mid-October, looking at money not flowing until mid-February. That means a real void for the economy. It means potentially some very nasty growth numbers."

But he said he didn't expect the two chambers of Congress to work together before then. "That means leaving something positive for Biden to start with, and that's not the mindset of Republicans in the Senate," he said.

I'm finding it extremely hard to muster up the copious amounts of pity that everybody seems to have here.

Much more often than not, people have put on weight since April.

If you can't do the things that are going to save you from being in the .4% who are likely to die because of comorbitities, such as taking vitamins, eating a healthy diet in moderation and at least a bare minimum of daily physical working out, than you're probably going to die of all of those health ailments that you had before Corona Beer's stock price was destroyed.

I think it all works fine. Pence can say no to Trump. It is only a tradition that Vice Presidents are servants of Presidents, but that is not a provision of the Constitution (as Jefferson and Adams might explain). It is possible that no Republican Senators would see any gain in breaking with Trump. It is almost certain that Trump won’t do this.

But I think it is his only chance of re-election.

It sounds like you are making a prediction. Remember the prediction of the tick tock of the cuckoo clock for Trump's impeachment and removal? That was stupid because there never was a deadline. The GOP controlled Senate would never-never allow it.

I don't think the GOP controlled Senate will pass Covid-19 relief this year. Who will make them vote for it between now and January 20, 2021?

For Covid-19 relief, there is a deadline. It is the electricity turned off. It is the car repossessed. It is the house mortgage foreclosed. But what is best about the deadline is that it all happens to President Biden, while Mitch McConnell can laugh and laugh some more about how he screwed the Democrats.

There is 90 days between October 22, 2020 - January 20, 2021. I think America will discover that Mitch McConnell is serious about screwing President Biden. In the next 90 days we will know how much Mitch hates Joe Biden.

After Trump has won, what would be the reason for Mitch McConnell and Trump to pass a Covid-19 relief bill, assuming the GOP won a Senate majority? Neither man cares about other people, except when those people can vote to remove them. After winning reelection in 2020, neither will have a reason to care for the next two years. The Cares Act passed in April to insure Trump won reelection. By December, after all the legal challenges and recounts to all the elections, we'll know which side of the coin landed upwards.

If Mitch McConnell allows the passage of Covid-19 relief between now and Jan 20th then you are right. But I think he will instead reveal his intention, once Mitch lost his belief that Trump would be reelected, to make Biden a one-term President by preventing President Biden from getting any of the money Pelosi included in the Heroes Act for both Trump and Biden. Mitch does not care how much damage withholding relief does to Americans because President Biden gets blamed for it. Most Americans have zero understanding of who Mitch is. NO. Mitch McConnell foresaw that Trump wouldn't win and because Mitch wants Biden to be a one-term President, Mitch did not pass any Covid-19 relief bills. Mitch could see that the Heroes Act would help both Trump and Biden. Since Trump would lose, why would Mitch pass a bill that also helps Biden? Even Trump is waking up to what happened.
