In the final minutes of the 90-minute long showdown, moderator Kristen Welker turned to climate change and asked each candidate how they planned to tackle the crisis.

President Trump, who has repeatedly called climate change a “hoax”, said he planned for a “trillion trees” before touting America’s “clean air”, “clean water” and lower carbon emissions (all of which are, at best, misleading, as The Independent has reported).

The president then pivoted to an attack on clean energy, taking particular issue with windmills.

“He thinks wind causes cancer. Windmills,” Mr Biden noted.

"I know more about wind than you do," Mr Trump replied, before going on to say windmills are extremely expensive, “kill all the birds” and “the fumes coming up, if you’re a believer in carbon emission … for these massive windmills is more than anything we’re talking about with natural gas which is very clean”.

Donald Trump gave another nonsensical answer on his tax returns in the debate

More than five years into his life as a politician, President Donald Trump still has no good answer on why he continues to refuse to release any of his past tax returns. Like, none:

"First of all, I called my accountants -- under audit. I'm going to release them as soon as we can. I want to do it. And it will show how successful, how great this company is.

"But much more importantly than that, people were saying $750. I asked them a week ago. I said, 'What did I pay?'

They said, 'Sir, you pre-paid tens of millions of dollars.' I pre-paid my tax, tens -- over the last number of years -- tens of millions of dollars, I pre-paid.

"Because, at some point they think -- it's an estimate; they think I may have to pay tax, so I already pre-paid it. Nobody told me that."

When Trump's words are written down, he looks stupider than on TV. Probed by moderator Kristen Welker for an exact date when he might release his taxes, Trump added this:

"Excuse me. And it wasn't written, whenever they write this -- they keep talking about $750, which I think is a filing fee. But let me just tell you. I pre-paid millions and millions of dollars in taxes, number one."

Huh? If you're confused, that's the point. Trump is trying to just throw out a bunch of terms -- "filing fee!" "statutory!" "pre-paid!" -- in hopes of muddying the waters enough that you will forget this central question: In the years 2016 and 2017, was the extent of your tax payment to the IRS $750?

That's it. That's the question that Trump has never been able to answer or, maybe more accurately, has never been willing to answer. He didn't do in Thursday night. And he certainly isn't going to answer it before November 3.

I don't know what debate these analysts were watching. Because the one I saw was between a normal politician, Joe Biden, and a man whose utter lack of empathy for any other human being is only matched by his baseless self-regard. The mute button only allowed Trump to speak at greater length, showcasing for all of America to see a textbook illustration of what sociopathy looks like. Afterwards, I wondered if Christian Bale had been watching, and if so, if he was worried that his star turn in "American Psycho" was too understated.

I know we've all grown numb to Trump's casual cruelty and his obvious inability to imagine that other people are fully real, but hot damn, it is incumbent on us who carry the dubious title of "journalist" not to let that numbness cloud our vision. There is something deeply wrong with that man. Anyone who listened — really listened — to him on Thursday night could see it.
