So, are these LEGITIMATE restrictions?

After all, we DO restrict voting! You must be a citizen, and over a certain age.

I would add that you must be able to provide proof of both your identity AND your citizenship, and follow whatever procedures are required to validate absentee or mail-in ballots.

Seems pretty brain-dead simple to me!

Now, on IT'S part, the state/county must provide secure and validate-able voting procedures, and follow them diligently in order to ensure that legitimate ballots aren't diluted with illegitimate ones.

Also pretty brain-dead simple!

Simple: stop

fraudulent, ineligible, criminal, illegal
Quote:

Democrats from voting. Once passed, these laws will become Federal Court cases. The Republican legislators who voted for the laws will have their words as evidence that stopping
fraudulent, ineligible, criminal, illegal
Quote:

Democrats was their intention. This will end with years of litigation in hundreds of cases. HR-1 will override all these cases, but HR-1 will itself be litigated for years, going all the way to the Supreme Court, much the same as Obamacare went to the Supreme Court.

FIFY.

Repeating the same lies over and over again does not make them true.

90,000 Ballots in Largest Nevada County Sent to Wrong Addresses, Bounced Back: Report
By Petr Svab
March 10, 2021 Updated: March 10, 2021

More than 90,000 ballots mailed to registered voters in Nevada’s largest county were returned undeliverable, according to an analysis of the election data by a conservative legal group.

So, OOC, how were these envelopes "bounced back" as "undeliverable"? Was it because no such address existed?

Or did it depend on the honesty of the recipient, who dutifully noted to the mail carrier that no such person lived there, and were returned?

Because if it depended on the honesty of the recipient, it would be far too easy for someone to say "Oh, hey! A Ballot that I get to use!". And since NOBODY was validating IDs, anyone could use one.

Hello Signym! Nevada County, California, says in the video that: "Every vote by mail ballots is carefully checked to ensure a voter did not vote elsewhere and that the signature on the envelope matches the voter's signature in the registration record."

A voter can check into the status of their mail in ballot (mailed, returned, counted or rejected) at https://voterstatus.sos.ca.gov/

If that is not good enough for you, Signym, complain to the government in California about that.

Republicans have introduced a huge raft of bills in red states that would restrict

fraudulent, illegal, corrupt, unsecured, ineligible, illigitemate
Quote:

voting in federal elections. And make no mistake: these bills are partisan cruise missiles aimed solely at reducing the Democratic vote.
Wow! Libtards finally admit that the illegal voting fraud is solely a Democrap operation!!
Quote:

They are loathsome.

But they are also pretty conventional. For the most part, they include all the old-school Republican favorites like restrictions on Sunday voting, photo ID laws, and so forth. These are all things Republicans have been promoting for years, and none of them have turned out to be all that effective. In some cases this is because they simply don't affect very many votes, while in others it's because they spur a backlash that prompts Democratic-leaning voters to turn out in higher numbers.

The big new addition to this arsenal is an attack on mail voting. Republicans are apparently convinced that this cost them the 2020 election, but it turns out these bills are just more of the same old ineffectual rubbish. Ian Millhiser describes a natural study of Texas voters:

Texas is one of a handful of states that discriminate on the basis of age when determining who may vote absentee: Voters over the age of 65 are allowed to request an absentee ballot, but most voters under that age are required to vote in person. The researchers at Stanford’s Democracy and Polarization Lab compared turnout rates among 65-year-olds in Texas’s 2020 elections — that is, among voters who were eligible to vote absentee — to the turnout rates among 64-year-olds who mostly could not vote by mail.

They found that “65-year-olds in Texas turned out in 2020 at almost exactly the same rate as 64-year-olds, even though roughly 18% of 65-year-olds voted absentee while only 3% of 64-year-olds voted absentee.”

The end result was that 65-year-olds were more Democratic than 64-year-olds by 0.2 percentage points, a difference too small to even be meaningful.

Other studies have shown the same thing: All of these anti-mail measures have only a very tiny effect. It may make Republicans feel good to demonstrate a whirlwind of activity that Fox News is happy to spin as "protecting against fraudulent votes," but in the end it doesn't really buy them much.

On a moral plane, this does nothing to excuse what they're doing. But on a practical plane, it means they're mostly wasting their time.

Bring it on, moron Trumptards! Please nominate Trump in 2024! If he runs, HR-1 requires him to reveal his income tax returns in Title X—Presidential and Vice Presidential Tax Transparency. If he won't, the IRS will do it without Trump's permission and make the results public. Too bad, Trumptards, if your man is a tax cheat.

Learn to love those two, 6ix, because Fatso can't get reelected after stealing $billions in tax money. Trump's lawyers will be in a life and death struggle to keep him from going bankrupt because of unpaid tax obligations. Donald Trump (Unironically) Requests a Mail-In Ballot Ahead of Palm Beach Municipal Election
March 10, 2021 9:55 AM

Ever since Nov. 3, and in fact for many months before Election Day, Donald Trump railed on and on about the existential danger to democracy that mail-in voting presented. It was, of course, all self-serving hooey. Trump voted (for himself) in Florida by mail in the March 2020 presidential primary and then again in an August 2020 primary, his family routinely votes by mail, and a quarter of all American ballots cast in the 2016 election — won by Trump — were cast via the post. But Trump’s voting lies got bigger and bolder and now a significant portion of the Republican Party doesn’t trust the 2020 election result and are using this concocted suspicion to make it harder to vote in Republican-controlled states across the country. Their biggest target? Mail-in voting.

k - I read that bill a month or 2 ago. Unless it's been changed in that time, the one thing it DOESN'T have that would definitely improve the entire election process is a validation requirement and protocol, specifically, statistical study like the one highlighted by the Mitofsky Report, as a basis for closer vote examination.
It sure would be nice to be able to demonstrate there were no signs of mass cheating, and if there were, to be able to go back and conduct a good examination of when, how, and who.

The mighty filibuster, the scourge of American governance for so many decades, was little more than one of those emperor-has-no-clothes things. As soon as a single person pointed out the truth, everyone blinked and suddenly realized that there had never been anything there in the first place. The majority party had always had the ability to pass anything it wanted with 51 votes. It took nothing more than the will to do it and the recognition that the other party could do it too. Far from requiring a nuclear option, it turns out that ending the filibuster required only the faintest breath to make it vanish in the breeze like a dried out dandelion.

If a county wants to vote by mail, whiny little Trumptards can't stop them. And HR-1 won't stop vote by mail, either. But not to worry because Sen. Joe Manchin decides whether or not HR-1 passes and he is leaning in the direction that pleases Trumptards. I don't know which way he will fall. He probably doesn't know.

Is that right?

Why isn't $15 minimum wage passed tomorrow then?

Why were progressives pushing so hard to get it into the "American Rescue Plan Act"?

Why was Bernie Sanders so desperate to keep it in ARPA that he argued increasing the minimum wage couldn't be struck down by the Byrd Rule since, by his own admission, it would have a direct impact on the budget by making goods and services cost more money for the Government?

Maybe we can break the rules whenever we'd like to now...

We just don't want to break them to raise the minimum wage.

Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) did not want $15/hr, so it didn't pass. Manchin said on TV that he is uncomfortable about spoiling other Democrats' plans but too bad because that how they do things in West Virginia. Probably next on Manchin's kill list is any spending bills on infrastructure.

So, let' recap what SECONDRATE has posted.

Quote:

Congress should set the rules for registration and voting and they should be the same for every state. This is so obvious that it barely even needs to be defended.
However, all of the changes to the vote were made by amending the Constitution, not by simply passing a bill. My guess is that, if HR1 were to be passed and come before the Supreme Court, it would be found unconstitutional.

Quote:

Every county in Texas has a different voting system. There is some overlap in the systems used in different counties because the clerk in one county might ask how they run elections in the four adjacent counties, but it is very nonuniform in different places and in some counties pretty damn close to chaos. I hope others states have more sensible systems, but the recounts and court cases in 2020 show that there is far too much flexibility in how each county or city can run their little piece of a national election.
Uh ... so what? There are many ways to vote, and many ways to count votes. As long as each county can guarantee that the vote is secure and can be audited (i.e. auditable records kept) the only way that this diversity could be challenged, I imagine, is under the "equal protection" clause of the Constitution.

I would strongly prefer HANDMARKED PAPER BALLOTS, COUNTED BY HAND IN PUBLIC, but that's for ech State Secretary to decide.

NOT a Constitutional amendment: The Voting Rights Act of 1965 is a landmark piece of federal legislation in the United States that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. Congress later amended the Act five times to expand its protections.

Voting Rights Act Amendments of 1970
Voting Rights Act Amendments of 1975
Voting Rights Act Amendments of 1982
Voting Rights Language Assistance Act of 1992
Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006

Furious Republicans have been arguing that the Act is unconstitutional since it passed. Should HR-1 pass, furious Republicans will argue it, too, is unconstitutional unless the constitution is amended, but that has been the Republican argument since 1965. Losing case after case never changes Republican certainty about the complete unconstitutional of the Act.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voting_Rights_Act_of_1965#Constitutional
ity

As expected, Republicans have taken several other voting laws to court in order to get those declared unconstitutional:

Help America Vote Act (HAVA)
National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA)
Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA)

Republicans won about as many cases involving voting acts as Trump won cases to get himself declared the winner in 2020, but the Republicans keep trying to overthrow everything as unconstitutional.

But based on CONSTITUTIONAL provisions.

For example, setting the legal voting age to 18 (from 21), changing the nature if selection from state Legislatures to direct election, giving freed slaves and women the right to vote were all Constitutional amendments.

HR1 seeks to make similar- scope changes that directly contradict portions of the Constitution.

Also don't forget the voting rights act was challenged in the Supreme Court as discriminatory against certain states.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/supct/html/94-203.ZO.html

If I were to write a bill that would address real problems but still fall within the "equal protections" clause of the Constitution, I would require that voting procedures be auditable and able to be challenged in court.

Signym, Republicans have always screamed about the "unconstitutionality" of everything they dislike. HR-1 is the most recent example. When enough justices from the Federalist Society are on the Federal Courts, the Republicans will start winning based on "unconstitutionality", a word thrown around too often by Republicans.

The GOP's legal moves have always been based upon first shouting "No!" Long after, their most talented lawyers come up with arguments that dazzle the yokels, but it is always a shout of "NO!" underneath the phony-baloney legal reasoning.

Sam Alito Delivers Grievance-Laden, Ultra-Partisan Speech to the Federalist Society. The Supreme Court justice railed against COVID restrictions, same-sex marriage, abortion, and the alleged persecution of conservatives.

politics/2020/11/alito-federalist-society-speech-insane.html

At least one justice is clearly a bitter partisan out to settle scores with the left. Flouting his ethical obligations, Alito waded into fierce political debates over public health during a pandemic, reproductive rights, LGBTQ equality, and other issues that routinely come before his court. It is wildly inappropriate for a justice to assume the role of Fox News commentators, and unwise in light of progressives’ mounting doubt about the Supreme Court’s legitimacy. Trump stacked the judiciary with judges just like him, who learned from the Federalist Society how to cloak Republican policies in the guise of conservative judicial philosophies.

Are you trying to set records for the number of lies in a single post?

Too many to recount.

Some:
VRA 1965 was specifically authorized by the Enforcement Clause of the 15th Amendment to The Constitution (meaning Part Of The Constitution).
It expired after 5 years, necessitating 1970 to continue enforcement, which also expired in 5 years. Thus 1975, which expired in 7 years, and 1982, for 25 years.

As with all of the Civil Rights Acts, and Voting Rights Acts (Blacks, former Slaves, Women, etc), Congress could not pass any of them until enough Republicans were elected to Congress to overcome the Democrap chokehold on common sense Rights. Before passage, VRA was informally known as the Dirksenbach Act (Dirksen was R-IL.)
VRA was very specifically purposed to cease Dixiecrat Libtard Democrats practices and policies, continuing since 1957.

Rights are always a Republican and conservative victory, always a Libtard Democrap Socialist Progressive Marxist defeat.

I have an advantage that you don't have, JewelStaiteFan. I can remember the passage of this law and clearly remember the people who were pleased or upset by it. For example, the Republican that co-sponsored the Voting Rights Act - Everett Dirksen - had nothing in common with the Trumptards of today's Senate. And the Texans upset by the Act of 1965 - who voted Democrat at the time - in the years after 1965 would be switching to Republican and voting for Nixon. None of the switchers are still alive, but their children became full blooded Trumptards who hate with a passion HR-1. It seems to be an inherited character trait of Trumptards to brag about qualities and abilities they don't actually possess and to accuse others of lying when it is the Trumptard who is lying. Trump is the best documented example of that trait.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everett_Dirksen#Early_life
Everett McKinley Dirksen's immigrant parents spoke a Low German dialect at home, and taught German to their children, but Johann had lived in the United States long enough to become politically aware; the middle names of all three boys were a nod to his Republican Party leanings.

JO and I were discussing the harmful effect of political parties on government.

ONE way to reduce the influence of political parties is to have the President and Vice President run separately. That would increase the chances that they might be of different parties.

Another way is for the FCC to REQUIRE that all broadcast media provide an equal amount of free primetime airtime (say, one hour per week) to ALL candidates who exceed a certain polling threshold, and that ... as part of their section 230 protections, all large platforms provide equal and easily-identifiable space to the same candidates to air their views and promote their platforms.

In addition, as part of their 230 protections, platforms must demonstrate that they are providing an unbiased space, only censoring speech that is illegal.

The cost of entry of a third party is huge, and part of that cost is advertising, so, while not "election reforms" per se, they should have a positive effect on the ability of non-establishment candidates to make their mark, and fall well within the purview of Congress.

The whole concept of limiting donations to candidates is pointless. It has never worked in the past. The best you can do is require that they be made public.

Look at the present. Would it be good if Mike Pence was Vice-President right now, rather than Kamala Harris? Harris was the tie-breaking vote for passing the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. No Republicans voted for that bill and I think I can safely assume that if Mike Pence was Biden's V.P., Pence would not have voted for the bill. By the way, Republican voters don't hate that bill; only Republican politicians hate it because it is a Democrat's bill.

I think that would FORCE Congress to write bills that are acceptable to BOTH parties, rather thn steamrolling bills along partisan lines. It's what the FF envisioned.

What you are so certain will lead to compromise would actually lead to even worse gridlock. If Jefferson Davis had been Abraham Lincoln's V.P. the Federal government could not have functioned because Davis's goals were incompatible with Lincoln's, just as today the GOP's goals are literally, not figuratively, at war with the Democratic Party's goals. Look at the Democrats' platform. Compare it to the GOP's. You will see that the two cannot come to a compromise.

If a nation is so polarized andore or less evenly divided, sometimes standing still is the best thing to do.

But even tho there may be extreme divisions on a few ideas, there are still large area of agreement.

With rare exceptions, everyone needs the same things:
Good food to eat.
A safe place to live and sleep.
Agency over their individual and collective futures.
Care for the very young, the sick, disabled, and the elderly.
A clean environment to live in.

Nobody likes corruption.
We almost all need meaningful jobs at living wages.

We almost all need meaningful jobs at living wages. ** $15/hour destroys jobs and start your own business if you want a meaningful job **
We can end our endless wars THIS YEAR. ** America can't appear to be too weak and frightened to fight any enemy anywhere **

To make the point a tiny bit clearer, it is no sweat to be obnoxious, disagreeable and to refuse to cooperate with anyone about anything. That attitude will definitely conserve your energy, but it might cost your life, but being dead conserves energy, too, because nobody pays lower taxes, works less, gets more rest, and has fewer problems than dead people.
