No need to argue me on this point. We're just going to sit here and watch it happen without a damn thing either of us can do about it.

I stopped wondering why poor people are poor after some poor people I know went to the trouble of carefully explaining to me over and over how they think prices are set on anything, including the price of oil, proving the poor know nothing, nothing at all:

Crude goes up, crude goes down

https://jabberwocking.com/crude-goes-up-crude-goes-down/

(I'll let you figure out how crude prices change gasoline prices. I could do it, but you couldn't get a correct answer even if your life depended on it, which is why the poor shall forever be poor. The ignorance of the poor is why they are poor, not the knowledge and greed of the rich, who know the poor never-never understand how this works.)

Oh. That argument again, huh?

Go fuck yourself brother. I haven't worked in over 2.5 years and you don't hear me crying about where my meals are coming from.

I'm better off than most people.

Here is another inflation example easier for 6ix to understand since there is only one seller per house. You might want to blame Biden for house price inflation, but the blame goes to the greed of the seller:

The median single-family home price rose 19.3 percent over the year to an all-time high of $328,000 in February, according to the Houston Association of Realtors. Meanwhile, the average sales price jumped by 13.4 percent to $395,871 in February.

Single-family home sales jumped 22.9 percent to 7,372 units sold from 5,997 in February of 2021.

The sales volume was up 23.3 from Feb. 2020, one of the last normal months before the pandemic began to shake up the real estate market.

The supply of homes on the market sunk to a low of 1.3 months in February, matching the historic low in May of 2021. The "months inventory", which represents how long it would take to sell the homes on the market at the current pace, is six months in a balance market where neither the buyer or seller has the upper hand.

(In Houston, the sellers have the upper hand and sellers are gouging buyers. Biden is not involved in any way, shape, or form. This is how pure Capitalism operates. The same happens with gasoline, except gallons of gasoline from different sellers don't have the distinctive differences that different houses have.)

At some point you're going to have to stop pretending that you're smarter than I am dude.

Haven't worked in over 2.5 years. Paid for house. Paid for car. Gas in the tank. Money in the bank. 826 credit score. Semi-retired since I was 32 years old.

Go talk to your fellow dummies on Twitter if you want to lord your pea brain over somebody.

Raw data: Gasoline price, 1950-2022
Author Kevin Drum Published on March 10, 2022 – 10:30 am

A reader emails with a question:

Could (would) you prepare a chart of gasoline prices (adjusted for inflation) say from 1950 to the present? I think it would be very informative.

Yes indeed! I'd be delighted. Here it is:

Data through 2021 is annual. Data for 2022 is the latest and greatest for this week. Inflation is adjusted using the implicit GDP deflator, which is the EIA's preferred measure. https://www.eia.gov/totalenergy/data/browser/index.php?tbl=T09.04#/?f=

Chart of the day: Inflation is up yet again

Author Kevin Drum Published on March 10, 2022 – 9:13 am

The BLS reports that the US inflation rate rose in lockstep with the European rate announced a few days ago. The headline inflation rate went up from 7.1% in January to 7.9% in February:

Corporations are using the current high inflation rate as an excuse to raise prices on just about everything. However, despite their claims of a workforce shortage, they are somehow finding the fortitude to avoid raising wages for their workers. Funny how that works.

Chief Judge Philip A. Brimmer said in a Jan. 14 order there was evidence of a conspiracy.

"The testimony of government witness Robbie Bryant, a Pilgrim's Pride employee, is sufficient to support a finding beyond a reasonable doubt that a conspiracy existed between Pilgrim's, Koch Foods, Claxton Poultry, Tyson Foods, Mar-Jac Poultry, and George's Inc. to rig bids and fix prices," the judge said in his order.

Standing trial are Jayson Penn, former president and CEO of Pilgrim's Pride; Roger Austin, former vice president of Fresh Foodservice at Pilgrim's Pride; Claxton Poultry Farms President Mikell Fries; Scott Brady, vice president of national accounts for Claxton Poultry Farms; along with other poultry company employees Jimmie Little, Timothy Mulrenin, William Kantola, William Lovette, Gary Roberts and Rickie Blake.

Democrats won't do anything about this because Republicans, who can stop anything so long as there are 41 GOP Senators, will scream that the Constitution forbids the Federal government from limiting greed and price gouging just as 19th Century Democrats (absolutely no connection to today, other than sharing the same name) once said the Constitution forbid limiting slavery.

Inflation in Action:
'Anomalies' found in natural gas market pricing during 2021 freeze

Natural gas prices spiked to more than $100 per million British thermal units in West Texas during the freeze, according to The Woodlands-based nonprofit Houston Advanced Research Center, which analyzes energy issues. Before the winter storm, natural gas was selling for an average of about $3 per million British thermal units. Some gas-powered electricity generators and municipalities reported that despite having contracts setting a price for the gas they planned to buy, some providers refused to sell their product at those prices, instead putting their gas on the open market for much higher prices.

Federal government and state government said they can’t do a damn thing about it, except investigate. The law forbids government to do anything more.

The 19th Century Senators who were absolutely certain that slavery was protected by the Constitution could have forced slavery to legally continue, but some of them, but not all slave owning Senators, resigned from the Senate. For example, Senator Jefferson Davis resigned to become the President of the Confederacy. Jeff Davis could have ensured his side won the argument about slavery if he had stayed in the Senate. Modern day GOP Senators are aware of Jeff Davis' tactical error, having discussed the error since 1864, and they won't resign. It was very hot-headed and short-sighted for slave-owning Senators to withdraw just because Lincoln was elected. They certainly didn't withdraw when Biden was elected, having learned a lesson from Jeff Davis.

Sky-high pump costs are imposing an especially big burden on low-income households who have been struggling to meet expenses.

“It’s a big hit to consumers, particularly low-income and moderate-income Americans,” says Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s analytics. “They’re already suffering from very high inflation. This just adds to it.”

Gas costs make up about 3.6% of income for Americans earning less than $30,000 a year, compared to 2.3% for those earning $50,000 to $150,000, a Labor Department survey shows.

And if lower-income Americans have to pay more for gas, Zandi asks, “What else aren’t they going to buy?”

We haven't even begun to see rock bottom. The Biden* Administration has ruined the American economy and all you're seeing right now are the first few cracks before the dam breaks.

To Shale and Back, Redux

The price of oil, which was extremely low during the worst of the pandemic — it actually went below $0 for a brief, weird period — has spiked as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

This price spike is adding to already high inflation, and it is inhibiting the Western response to Vladimir Putin’s aggression — governments are reluctant to tighten sanctions against Russian energy exports, lest rising prices anger their voters.

But shouldn’t we expect the market to help reduce this problem? Don’t higher prices provide an incentive to increase oil production outside Russia? Yes, they do, and there are in fact signs of at least some supply response to high prices. So far, however, most media accounts suggest that this response is limited, and that the U.S. oil industry — which is where most of the extra production would probably have to come from — is reluctant to expand.

OK, obligatory reminder that higher oil production would not necessarily be a good thing. The dangers of climate change just keep getting even more terrifying, and the world needs to wean itself from fossil fuels, not produce more. At best, you can make a St. Augustine argument — “Make me chaste and celibate, but not yet” — for higher oil production during the Ukraine war. But even that’s dubious.

Still, the tepid response of oil producers to very high prices needs explaining. Why aren’t they rushing in to take advantage of the Putin premium?

Of course, the usual suspects blame President Biden, who is responsible for everything bad — hey, I blame him for the fact that my first cup of coffee this morning was a bit weak. Or they denounce environmentalists and government regulation — remember the rush to blame the 2021 electricity crisis in Texas on renewable energy, when disrupted supplies of natural gas were actually the main factor?

But the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas recently carried out a survey of oil producers, asking them what was inhibiting their expansion, and for the most part they didn’t blame either regulators or environmentalists. Instead, they blamed their bankers.

What’s that about? The answer is, we’re looking at the aftermath of the debt-financed shale bubble of the 2010s.

The introduction of fracking — using high-pressure water to fracture shale containing trapped natural gas and oil — was, without question, a big deal. But many people in the business world (and, for what it’s worth, the national security community) treated it as a bigger deal than it was. I don’t know how to quantify this, but my sense all through the 2010s was that Very Serious People were far more enthusiastic about fracking than they were about the truly revolutionary advances in renewable energy. After all, extracting oil and gas sounded hardheaded and realistic, while a surprising number of influential people still associate solar and wind power with hippie fantasies.

And this Serious Person enthusiasm for hydrocarbons translated into a willingness to throw money at the fracking industry, which bled cash year after year but kept going by running up hundreds of billions in debt.

Eventually, however, this debt-financed boom hit a wall. The death of the former chief executive of Chesapeake Energy in 2016 seemed to mark the end of the industry. Chesapeake eventually became one of more than 230 oil and gas companies to declare bankruptcy since 2015. (Aubrey McClendon, Chesapeake Energy CEO, was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of conspiring "to rig bids for the purchase of oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma". Next day he killed himself.)

But the financial implosion of fracking didn’t provoke a broader financial crisis, as some observers worried. The bad news is that the aftermath of that implosion is, as I said, inhibiting the West’s response to Putin’s aggression today: Having been burned in the past, the energy sector’s bankers are keeping a tight leash on spending despite the surge in oil prices.

They may be overdoing it: Whatever happens in the war, it’s hard to see Russia fully rejoining the world economy for a long time, so oil prices are likely to stay high for a while. Still, the caution of fracking creditors is understandable. And to be fair, the really important energy adjustments will have to come from Europe, which needs to end its dependence on Russian natural gas.

There are, I think, two broader lessons here.

First, bubbles don’t necessarily involve obviously flaky ideas. We can and should make fun of investors taken in by Silicon Valley technobabble, but it’s perfectly possible to lose hundreds of billions on ventures that seem perfectly solid, except for the fact that their math doesn’t add up.

Second, burst bubbles can have long lasting effects. One reason rents are surging right now, adding to inflation, is the long drought in home building that followed the housing bubble — a bubble that burst 15 years ago.

I just hope that fossil fuel advocates don’t manage to use the current oil shock to bash climate activists, who bear no responsibility for the mess we’re in.

America’s inflation problem is weirdly hard to fix

America’s inflation problem, explained to the extent it is possible.

Inflation: Why? That’s the question many consumers have been finding themselves asking lately. Followed by inflation: Fix?

We’re in quite a conundrum when it comes to rising prices. Inflation is at a 40-year high in the United States and accelerating around the globe. The situation may very well get worse before it gets better, as Russia’s war on Ukraine stands to exacerbate price pressures, as does a new round of lockdowns in China due to Covid-19.

Among economists and experts, there’s no strict consensus about what exactly is to blame. There are certain factors widely agreed upon that we’ve been hearing about for months: supply chain woes, rising oil prices, shifting consumer demands. These concerns have hardly subsided. But there are other arenas where there’s more disagreement, such as the role government stimulus has played in increasing prices, and the possibility that corporate greed is an important factor.

The answer to the question of exactly why inflation is happening is kind of hard

Whichever economist or expert or policymaker you ask to explain the current inflation story to you is going to tell you something slightly different. I asked a bunch of economists over the past couple of weeks what was causing inflation and how to fix it. Most kind of laughed for a second before launching into their cases, acknowledging the full answer is, to a certain extent, ¯\_(”)_/¯.

I would like to be able to tell you a coherent story about inflation where everyone absolutely agrees with all certainty what is going on. But I cannot. So instead, I’m going to pop through some theories that some economists say are contributing and others say are not.

But it does feel a little iffy to say that giving less-well-off people benefits that included a little over $1,000 tanked the economy, given all the support the government gives to corporations and rich people all the time.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

The cause of inflation is STILL: Too much money hasing too few goods.

Banks, The Fed, the Treasury, have been inflating money supply for decades (easy loans, low interest rates/quantitative easing, deficit spending). This is not a DNC problem or a GOP problem, it is both.

At the same time, production has fallen or become inaccessible due to AMERICAN sanctions on Russian products (thanks Joe*), "green" energy policy, and offshoring jobs.

Production can't be "turned on" like a light switch, it takes investment and training, none of which the USA financial oligarchs are about to do. Even if we start now, it will be impossible for us to make industrial chemicals, fertilizer, textiles, antibiotics, chips etc any time in the next 5-10 years.

And SOME production can't be done at all, for example the USA has no titanium, palladium, etc, and we have used up all of our easily-accessible oil. Drought everywhere west of the Mississippi will make the winter wheat harvest small, and unless the drought turns around this spring, corn, soy and (ultimately) meat production will suffer.

OTOH if the money supply spigot is turned off, there will be no money to invest in production and it will become impossible for America to compete in the world market for scarce goods.

It's a conundrum, alright, and the only fix is mandatory investment in production. which our financial oligarchs are not about to allow.

*****

We can't do anything about rising fuel prices except buy smaller cars and conserve on home heating and electricity use. Can't do anything at all about rising consumer goods costs either. The only thing that can be mitigated is rising food prices, and that only by backyard gardening.

You're almost right, but per usual you have dragged in too many examples (chemicals, fertilizer, textiles, antibiotics, chips, titanium, palladium, corn, soy, meat) which muddles the stark simplicity of how prices are set.

You can see much better how inflation works if you look at the opposite, deflating prices, lower prices. In real estate, increasing the interest rates on mortgages will lower prices. If buyers can't afford a $350,000 house mortgage because the monthly payments on their mortgage have been raised too high, then sellers have to lower their prices until buyers can afford the mortgage payments on a smaller mortgage. Prices will go down only when buyers can not afford to pay more. And prices will go up, assuming the seller is neither stupid nor a generous family member, when buyers can pay more. Where it gets complicated is when mortgages have two interest rates, a low rate in the first years, then a high rate later. Buyers can be tricked into paying inflated prices with these mortgages. That mortgage trick is great for the sellers, but not so good for buyers who are suckered into bad deals. The math behind a bad deal is very simple and shows no mercy to buyers who don't think more than a year ahead because they are convinced real estate prices only increase.

Prices can go down when supply is greater than demand It's called a SUPPLY-damnd curve, for a reason

You picked a stupid example, bc home buying (demand) is highly multiplied by interest rates. Household purchases (food, gas, electricity, clothes, etc), usually paid for in cash, don't depend on interest rates. Demand is SOMEWHAT elastic, but you can't squeeze people below starvation levels without flirting with revolt.

I can tell you didn't read the article on all the theories explaining inflation and I am also pretty sure you have been and will be screwed out of some money that could have been yours when either selling or buying real estate. The kind of people who defend Trump are not the kind of people who understand that capitalism is a selfish contest between greedy people for prize money. When they mention supply-demand curves as the main explanation for prices, you know they will not be winning the prize.

Congress is currently trying to suss out why gasoline prices are so high. Here's the answer:

When the price of oil goes up, so does the price of gasoline. To get the price of gasoline, just divide the real price (adjusted for inflation to 2022 prices) of a barrel of West Texas Intermediate crude oil by 38 and then add $1.10 to get the real price of gasoline. That's the dashed gray line. The actual price of gasoline is shown by the red line. For you nerds out there, this regression has an R-squared of .95. For you non-nerds, this means that the price of oil explains 95% of the variation in the price of gasoline.

https://jabberwocking.com/oil-is-up-gasoline-is-up-any-other-questions/

Why are there 42 gallons in a barrel of oil? Soon after America's first commercial oil well of 1859, a small group met in northwestern Pennsylvania and decided a 42-gallon barrel was best for transporting their oil. When filled with oil instead of fish or other commodities, a 42-gallon “tierce” weighed 300 pounds.

Inflation rates in Canada/United States/Mexico are close to the same, which shoots down the argument that inflation in the US was uniquely/solely/exclusively caused by injecting an additional $2.4 trillion into the economy on top of the $4.1 trillion committed to the American Rescue Plan and the Cares Act:

Canada’s inflation rate: https://tradingeconomics.com/canada/inflation-cpi

The Capitalists in all three countries keep track of the prices in the other two and they use that knowledge to decide how much they can gouge the citizens of their own country. Too bad the governments of Mexico and Canada have exactly the same control of prices, zero, cero, nothing, as the government of the United States.

Let me repeat your own words back to you: "Wrong. The answer is the Biden* Administration. Period."

There are three countries in North America. The last time any North American government had control of prices was back in WWII. All the rest of the time the Capitalists of North America have total control of prices. If governments want lower prices, governments will have to point a gun at the head of the Capitalists, just like governments did during WWII. Then government can "press a button and PRESTO!" Prices will be lower.

That is how prices are set, 6ix. There is no mystery to what is happening although there are a lot confused people (about 99%), but the Capitalists aren't confused about who decides and how prices are decided.

During WWII, government policy was that Capitalists WILL NOT RAISE PRICES. Capitalists did just great during WWII with fixed prices. Business was booming! There was full employment! The policy after WWII was that Capitalists can set prices to whatever. There are no more limits. That is the government policy you are complaining about. It is NOT AUTOMATIC that prices must go up when there are trillions of dollars in stimulus. It is a very conscious decision by Capitalists to raise prices and vacuum up money from suckers who are too stupid to understand what is happening.

Average with mortgage: $2,675

Average with rent: $2,436

Here's why I win. And incidentally, Second, this is why I'm not talking about ME when I'm talking about American's hurting.

My figures:

Mortgage: $0

Rent: $0

Auto Loan: $0

Utilities: $200/mo average for Water/Trash; Gas/Electric (a generous estimate)

Auto Insurance: $22

Health Insurance: $0

Cable & Internet: $20

Mobile Phone: $0

Alarm & Security: $0

Life Insurance: $0

TOTAL PER MONTH: $242

That's 1/10th what the average renter spends, and 1/11th what the average homeowner spends. Even better than that if they didn't neglect to add the average figures for Security and Life Insurance, which isn't ZERO.

And I guaranty you that my monthly spending on food and gasoline is far less than the average. There's no question that my property taxes are on the very low end of the national average, costing in a full year less than what your average American renter pays for apartment rent in a single month. And considering that aside from shoes, socks and underwear the only clothing purchases I've made in over a decade were from Goodwill, I'm killing it on the textiles front too.

Bidenflation is just another way that Democrats annoy me. To me it's no more significant than a mosquito bite. But I was never going to vote for 2020's Democrats anyhow. You need to be worried about all of the people who voted Democrat in 2020 that are being crushed by the weight of the Albatross of the Administration they hung around their own necks.

They don't give a single shit about your excuses.

I've seen plenty of "I Did This" stickers on gas pumps around here. Perhaps the criminals should be putting them on the gas tanks so Biden* is pointing at the hole after they drill into them to pull the gas out.

As for sitting on $7,000 worth of stolen gasoline in your home or your garage, that's just a genius move right there. Do try not to smoke your cigarettes or weed or meth anywhere near them while you wait for somebody in your neighborhood to report that you're selling drugs when they see the constant flow of people coming and going to your house to buy black market gas.

And do you know how much $7,000 worth of gas at $4.15 per gallon weighs?

10,120 lbs.

It's also just over 225 cubic feet, not including any space that you have between all of the containers. To put that into perspective, your average refrigerator ranges from 22 to 31 cubic feet. I have no idea where you're going to put 10 refrigerators worth of gas cans in your house and garage, but there's no way that OSHA would approve of the storage scheme.

Talk about an extreme level of effort and risk with very little payoff on the back side.

Google ROI

In the mean time, might I suggest working as a money mule for Indian and Kenyan call centers scamming senile senior citizens in the interim while putting off your plans for building your stolen gas empire until at least the tail end of the Biden* Administration. There's simply no benefit to any of this nonsense unless gas hit a price point of at least $20 per gallon. And that would be assuming that the price of everything else hadn't gone up in kind, which wouldn't be the case.

Here's why I win. And incidentally, Second, this is why I'm not talking about ME when I'm talking about American's hurting.

$4,194.
That is my monthly Social Security, when it starts in the third week of April. My living expenses are covered. When my wife starts her Social Security next year, at least as much as I am getting, and adjusted for inflation, we will be able to save money.

Now I will tell you the true story of a Trump voter. Married twice. No children. Opened a restaurant. It went bankrupt. He could not see the connection between how he ran his restaurant and his business failure. His second wife would have killed him for squandering all her money in his day trading on the stock market, but before she could he died of oral cancer because, you know, he didn't believe in doctors.

He is not the only American I know who ruined his life, yet never understood what he was doing wrong.

I loaned, so far, $721,953 to a Married/Divorced/One child/60 year old American at 0% interest, with repayments of $1,500 per month. That will require 40 years to pay it back. I will be 110 years old. I am betting I will be healthy and alive and one of the oldest Vietnam War vets but I don't think I will get paid back even if I live to be 200. Remember: zero percent interest loan. Last night she came by because she needs to borrow more money to replace 6 front teeth. It is either me or a loan from a finance company connected to the dentist. She cuts hair at her own salon. She is the boss of her life. All that money I loaned her over the last 8 years? She has nothing to show for it. She shows me the bills, for a broke car or a roof and I loan her the money, 0%, remember.

Another story: I gave to Jill, single/no-children/45-years-old, a 0% interest loan that will never be repaid of $78,700. Furthermore, $302,575 was a gift stretched out over the years since October 2011. Adding the loan and the gift together and that comes to $36,342 per year. Jill has nothing to show for all that money, except for the Toyota Camry I bought her, which she can't afford to drive because of gasoline prices.

I have many more stories, some ending with early deaths, but they all have something in common. None of the people understood what they were doing wrong, none of these Americans would change their ways except the most superficial changes such as driving less, despite their anxiety telling them they must make large changes, none of them realized that all their most important problems are their own fault, and money would not solve their problems, which means the Federal government, no matter how generous, could NOT deflect these people from the disasters they cause all by themselves, without thinking about what they did.

Not my point, and nobody cares.

My first point was that if nothing changes I won't even get $800 a month by the time I'm 62 and I could easily live off of that.

My second point is that Twitter isn't the Real World and most of the people who vote Democrat aren't in either of our financial positions and don't give one single shit about Russia or Ukraine or any other bullshit excuse about why they can't even live paycheck to paycheck anymore after a year of Biden* being in office.

Not only do they want answers why they're hurting. They want solutions. And all the current regime has to offer is excuses.

Democrats are done. Enjoy the next 7 months while they last.
