All episodes of Firefly are now available for purchase and download on iTunes for only $1.99 each. This is a fantastic opportunity for supporting our remarkable show. As a way of showing the ongoing vibrant fanbase for Firefly, and to make the most of such great access to our shiny show, fans will be joining in "Firefly Fortnight". As it just so happens, there's 14 days in a fortnight and Firefly has 14 episodes, so it's a great way to spend two weeks boosting the signal! The basic purchase plan is for everyone to start with "Serenity" on day one, and then organize our purchases to follow each episode, each day, in order. Everyone will buy the same Firefly episode each day -- in the order intended by Joss -- all 14 shows through to the end with "Objects in Space". Two full weeks of Firefly buyin' goodness!

This initiative kicks off on Friday, August 11th. The purchase dates are:

Aug 11 - Serenity
Aug 12 - The Train Job
Aug 13 - Bushwhacked
Aug 14 - Shindig
Aug 15 - Safe
Aug 16 - Our Mrs. Reynolds
Aug 17 - Jaynestown
Aug 18 - Out of Gas
Aug 19 - Ariel
Aug 20 - War Stories
Aug 21 - Trash
Aug 22 - The Message
Aug 23 - Heart of Gold
Aug 24 - Objects in Space

Now there's bound to be some spill over with the episodes, especially if you want to recruit someone halfway into the fortnight, well, they'll need to see Serenity first... so just buy Serenity, and all the episodes needed to catch up at that point! But the fun will be giving each episode its own special day. Makes for interesting discussions on the forum too. It's always great to rediscover a Firefly episode, and see something you missed the first 40 or 50 times you watched it... heh...

Spread the word — let's get some buzz goin' and have a great time boosting Firefly to the top of the download chart. Do you have a family member, friend or co-worker who would enjoy being introduced to Firefly on their iPod, or on their computers? Been tryin' to help folks discover how singularly incredible Firefly is, but you're meeting resistance? Getting excuses like: DVD sets too pricey; they don't have the time to go buy the DVD set; spaceships and cowboys sounds so weird; or they have a problem with their brains bein' missin'? Well, cut through all that resistance and just send them Firefly episodes as gifts! Yeah, that's right, it's the high tech way to badger folks into doing something they'll thank you for over and over again later on anyway....

Episodes can be purchased here:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/

TV Shows > FOX > FOX Television Classics

Gifts ~ Here's the info page on how to purchase pre-paid iTunes Gift Cards, or you can buy and SEND Firefly episodes via email, or print a certificate with a special code... Apple's got it covered several ways...

http://www.apple.com/itunes/give/

If you don't have iTunes, it's free for Mac and Windows (double check the specified system requirements though):

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Let's show that the audience for the 'Verse is still goin' strong... and growing! Buy 'em for yourself, buy 'em for other folks too. This is an outstanding opportunity to spread the word of Firefly at only $1.99 per episode. People are now only a few keystrokes away from the BEST. SHOW. EVER. Let's make it count.

Little pressed for time these days, but I cobbled together a web banner for folks to use to promote "Firefly Fortnight".

Here's a nice, little simple banner... Not enough room to give the whole message, but much easier to download. A good, general promotional banner for Firefly on iTunes.

There is another banner designed by the talented and brilliant Hera. Rumor has it folks will be spottin' it in the Blue Sun Room in the very near future.

These banners are being offered as ready-to-use promotional tools for Firefly Fortnight... but for those who got a hankerin' to make their own banners, please do so. Just remember to make sure the dates are right and so forth, and give a folks a place to go to get more info... either the main FFF home page, or a direct link to this thread.

Let's have some fun with this!

Folks, if you use the iTunes banner in your sigs on other boards, hotlink it so that interested parties can come get the full skinny on the initiative. Use the url for this thread: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=19&t=22697

If you use it here on FFF.net (she don’t support no stinkin’ hot linkin’, unfortunately), just paste the link url as text above your banner, example shown here.

Help boost this signal!

I like the way you think! That whole cart/horse thing is really working for you here.

Let us know how it goes. Might be a useful selling point for other folks. Give 'em a good excuse, assuming their significant others are as sympathetic as yours!

I don't mean to bust anyone's bubbles here, but Firefly is also available through Peer Impact, for HALF THE PRICE of iTunes.

http://www.peerimpact.com

They also have lots of other shows and movies too! If you have Windows/XP, you should definitely check them out. I have, and I prefer it over iTunes any day.

In terms of that site. It seems interesting the peerimpact, however the price is for rental. So you can only keep it for 30 days and have to watch it in a 24 hour period once you start playing. its a nice idea, but I think some people would prefer to be abel to play the video whenever. its an interesting alternative for 1 buck per episode, however if they want the whole series(and keep it), might as well buy the episodes for 1 buck more.

You have a point there. Of course, I'm sticking with Peer Impact for other reasons. Besides, I can always rent episodes every month to show support for the show, and you'll only buy an episode once!

I plan to not only buy the episodes for myself... I want an IPod.. I'm gettin' an IPod ( being positive here!), but also offer them as downloaded gifts for two of my friends who just haven't gotten to looking at them on the DVD's. On their computer.. free to them... they just might give it a chance. And fall in love!

In the same camp with FollowMal, I'll be purchasing the episodes as gifts for friends. Being able to send them via email is an incredible way to circulate Firefly.

iTunes is also very high profile, the top site for downloads in fact, sales which show up there get noticed a lot more. Plus the iTunes program is downloadable for free, and it's cross platform... so there's versions for Windows and Mac.

Plus, as previously stated, with iTunes my friends get the episodes for keeps. And since I'm working to reach out and make many more new Firefly fans, I'll be buyin' these episodes a lot more than once.

Getting close to our start date for Firefly Fortnight ~ August 11th!

Show our continued support for the 'Verse by purchasing Firefly eps from iTunes. They really do make great gifts and are a great way to spread the word about our shiny show. Think how happy you'll make people by helping them to discover Firefly!

The price is very reasonable, only $1.99 per episode... which is only a dollar more than the cost of one song. Hey, an episode is almost an hour long, has pictures, PLUS it has that cool bluesy song in the intro... you get so much for your money!

Every way we show support helps keep us flyin'.

Firefly Fortnight is upon us!

For those who might question why fans, who already own the Firefly DVD set (perhaps several of them) would want to purchase a download version of the episodes... well remember: This purchase campaign isn't just about buying episodes for ourselves. It's about spreading the word of the 'Verse... you can send Firefly iTune episodes as gifts!

Being able to purchase Firefly eps at such a reasonable price and then send them as gifts via email, or through gift coupons, is an OUTSTANDING way to spread Firefly to other people. We all do our parts to help new folks discover Firefly, but we can sometimes hit resistance when people aren't convinced enough to purchase a full DVD set. By sending people individual eps, which can be easily viewed on your computer or iPod, we can do wonders to reach out get the 'Verse to so many new people.

Plus, iTunes is the top download site and by boosting the sales we are continuing to keep Firefly in the public eye. We're also showing that there is a ready audience to purchase episodes directly. The entertainment business is exploring all kinds of new ways to distribute entertainment. Perhaps a way that Firefly/Serenity can continue is through some kind of direct purchase model. Let's show that there's an audience out there to support it.

Spread the word!

EXACTLY. I have an ulterior motive for my downloading for myself. If I have those sweet eps around where I could put them on a vid IPod.. I'm gonna be so tempted to buy myself an IPod...
I deserve one right? I work hard.

Also the second half of the thrill of doing this for me is the gift giving.. I've added two more friends of my daughter's to the list of folks I'm gifting with these eps. One LOVED Serenity, and didn't even know there was a show! So now she gets to fall in love harder. And I know this gregarious young lady will be sharing Firefly with everyone she loves right quick. This ITunes thing is a win win situation no matter how you look at it.

Heck I downloaded the whole series quite awhile ago when I found it avaiable on iTunes. I actually just ordered a 42 hour battery for my wife's iPod so as to watch more than just two eps on one charge.

Firefly on iPod is about the only reason to own an iPod. Now I just need Serenity on it.

Here's a guerilla marketing idea, pick three (or more) people from your email address book, people who haven't seen Firefly but who seem like folks who could become fans, and send them the gift of Serenity!

iTunes makes it so easy to send episodes as gifts via email. Purchase the pilot "Serenity" and set her loose on the web to seek out yet-to-be-born Browncoats. Firefly eps are only $1.99 each and can be viewed on the iPod or computer. This is a fabulous way to guerilla market the BEST.SHOW.EVER.

Here is the home page for the video section of iTunes. Scroll to the bottom and there's a section that shows you how to give episodes as gifts via email!

http://www.apple.com/itunes/videos/

Only a $1.99 each... spread the Firefly love!

For the record, you can watch the eps straight from iTunes even if you don't have a video iPod. You can even watch them full-screen, if you like. It's not DVD quality by any means, but still.

I hate to burst anyone's bubble but buying the episodes on iTunes means that a)the resolution is signficantly worse than DVD b)you can only watch it on your $300 video iPod or computer if you want to watch it on your nice large TV or a portable video device not made by apple you're screwed and c)it's actually more expensive then buying the cheapest DVD set I've found online. Plus I just don't like DRM ( http://craphound.com/msftdrm.txt) and iTunes is one of the worst offenders in that regard.

It's true that the quality is not as good as the DVD, and the episodes are meant to viewed on either the iPod or your computer. However, those factors become less important when one considers that this format still works so well for guerilla marketing Firefly.

These episodes can be purchased one at a time, and people can get an introduction to Firefly without starting off by investing in a full DVD set. Many new fans can be created by viewing just a few episodes, in fact, just seeing Serenity might do the trick.

The best thing the iTunes episodes have going for them is as guerilla marketing tools. $1.99 is a very reasonable price to be able to send Serenity to someone as a gift, via email, and help them discover the 'Verse.

2nd day folks! I took 11th Hour's advice and went thru my email addresses and found two more people I can gift Firefly to.

This is a great opportunity to spread Firefly around for not very much money. I know from experience that sometimes you can get someone to look at just a bit ( one ep maybe, gifted with love) and they fall in love. I hooked my brother with a Firefly fanvid! I wish I had had the ITunes opportunity then.. it'd happened much quicker.

This isn't about replacing the DVD's to me, this is about talking myself into an IPod ( ok, I digress a bit there). It's about marketing Firefly to others so that we can build the 'Coat population up. More fans there are buying Serenity, the more likely we get a sequel. I'm still all about the sequel.

Instead of just holdin' til Mal gets back... I can fire out of the trench til Mal gets back!
I like action better!

Awesome post FollowMal... you are a true Browncoat, through and through.

Today is Train Job day! This is the episode Joss and Tim had to rush write in order to try and create a second "pilot" show... because FOX, in all its brillant strategy, would not show the actual pilot, Serenity, first.

Train Job took some criticism in the beginning because it didn't quite work as a replacement "first" show to introduce the 'Verse to the audience. Well, it was a tall order... asking a 1 hour show to do what the 2 hour pilot did, plus not duplicate material from Serenity, and still take place after the events of the pilot. *whew* The thing is, the 'Verse needed the introduction that Serenity provided for the audience to be introduced to such a rich, and unusual, show. But this is an oft told story that ends up provoking thoughts of "what might have been", and then inevitably leads to strong epithets hurled in the direction of a certain TV network... and deservedly so...

All that aside, Train Job is a solid, highly enjoyable episode, full of classic Firefly moments... with the topper coming at the end. The swift resolution of Mal's confrontation with Crow is the white hot moment that turned many a curious viewer into a Browncoat... for life.

Hey, today is the day to get Bushwacked!

Well, maybe not for real... but it's the day to download the episode.

Bushwacked was the first episode of Firefly that I taped. I hadn't expected to fall so deeply in love with Firefly the week before, so I didn't have a tape setup for Train Job. Well, after that, you can bet I made sure to tape every single episode.

I remember that once I had Bushwacked taped, I used it right away to begin recruiting my friends with the, "You have GOT to see this show... it's, it's AMAZING."

Of course taping the episodes got even trickier after that, what with FOX pre-empting the show in those crucial beginning weeks, and then the extended hiatus. Oh wait, if I revisit all those memories I'm gonna get mad all over again...

So... fast forward... to now. Here we are with DVD sets, and you can even buy an episode and download it to your computer! Technology is moving right along and we're heading into a realm where viewing entertainment will no longer be at the mercy of idjit network bungling.

Let's show that we'll keep getting Firefly in all manner of ways that we can. The more active and supportive we are, the more we bolster the incentive for studios to give us more Firefly and Serenity!

Hey, today is a great day for a Shindig!

See ~

• The episode that coined the term "Captain Tightpants"!
• Kaylee in her fabulous ruffled party gown!
• Discover that Mal's kinda parties must always include punching!
• Jayne doing full body lifts from a ceiling grate... hubba... hubba...
• Book looking right at home as the steely eyed card shark!
• Simon saves the canned goods from River's attack!
• Zoe confirms that Mal knows which end of a sword to hold!
• River surprises, and strangely charms, the nefarious Badger!
• The record setting episode for calling Inara a "whore"!
• Wash almost witnesses an exciting escape plan... that didn't happen!
• Inara provides sword fighting lessons... in her filmy nightgown!
• Mal demonstrates the mark of a great man, and a good man... and then a man that's all right...

Mighty fine shindig...

Good mornin' 'Coats!

Another day, another ITunes download. Today it's Safe. The episode that gave birth to our Big Damn Heroes!

I was showing a customer at work ( cuz I'm downloading the eps at work) how easy it was to download from ITunes, she was saying how she was amazed how easy it was to do and to gift the eps.
Then of course began the conversation about why Firefly and why I was so passionate about it. So I gifted her the pilot. Let her see for herself why this show is so special. At $1.99 what have I got to lose but pocket change and I might gain a convert! I promise you.. she'll be in love like the rest of us. That is what is so cool about this ITunes Campaign...you might reach a person with very little invested and the show sells itself, soooo... new Browncoat.

I'm gonna be glad to have the eps ( on my new IPod!...yeah, I just keep saying that.. kinda like if I say it enough I'll just have to get one!)so that I can access them easily to remember quotes, during moments when I need something funny to see... to look at Mal. ( Oooops, I said that outloud.)

Anyway, isn't there someone you can think of you'd share this show with by gifting them a download?

They won't even play nicely for me (it's like watching one of those old film strips in grade school, minus the "DING") but I'm buying mine each day, hoping that the numbers will be impressive to someone in power out there.

By the way, any way to tell 'the numbers?' Is there a ranking system of iTunes downloads?

Thank you CarolJude for joining the cause.. even though they won't play well. They won't play on my home computer as well as they do on my work computer..I'm hoping on the ( new!) IPod they'll do better.

I don't know about rankings... Jtskier was gonna look into that. I was too. When we know something, we'll post it here.

I'd like to see it at the top of the downloads as The Most Downloaded TV Show!! Browncoats are entirely capable of that!

Is it Safe?

Why yes it is... it's Safe day!

I wish we could have gotten that audio commentary for Safe that Alan Tudyk kidded about (during the War Stories commentary)... with Summer and Sean... Alan making reference to that brother and sister who spend a lot of time together...

Anyway, another wonderful episode of Firefly... and as FollowMal pointed out, this is the show that establishes the classic 'Verse term "Big Damn Heroes".

This is also the episode that really lets you know that you can't judge a "Book" by his cover. Somethin' heavy duty in that guy's past...

And find out why smuggling black market beagles is a better plan than smuggling cattle...

Well, I bought Serenity on the first day, but Sat-Monday I wasn't at my work computer so I'm makin' up for it today. My IPod is updatin' in the background right now with "Train Job, Bushwacked, Shindig, and Safe". *whew!* Should be able to keep up until the weekend. Then Next Monday I'll hafta catch up again, three Episodes on one day. Not complainin' though, can't wait till all of it is on my IPod. Then I can bring it everywhere.

--------------
Wash: Closing in.
Zoe: Planet's coming up a might fast.
Wash: That's just 'cause I'm goin' down too quick. Likely crash and kill us all.
Mal: Well, if that happens, let me know.

It's sooo good to hear that other Browncoats are downloading the eps. I have been a fan ever since Firefly first aired. I was ecstatic when it came back last summer on the Sci-Fi Channel. Words can not describe how thrilled I was to have a movie premiere last September. I was there on the 1st day and went back with friends several times.

I do have 6 sets of the Firefly series. Five of the sets roam from friend to friend as I share the 'Verse, and one cherished copy that I keep at home. I have 4 copies of the movie. I have one copy for home, and I try to encourage friends to buy their own copy of Serenity. Although I do have those few copies to share for those that can't afford it right now.

Since I heard about Firefly Fortnight, I have been downloading the episodes for 4 friends, and I check the iTunes list of most downloaded shows. I am sooo hopeful that Firefly will show up in the top 100. It could soar to the top too if everyone would send 1 episode to a friend. My 3 favorite episodes are coming up: Our Mrs. Reynolds on Wednesday, Jaynestown on Thursday, and Out of Gas on Friday. Even if you haven't done the 1st episodes, send one of the next 3 to a friend.

Great post VerseExplorer! Glad to see such enthusiasm and creative guerilla marketing. The more we all stay motivated, the stronger and far reaching the audience for more of the 'Verse will be.

Good point about the next three episodes, they do work quite well as introduction shows. Although it is best to start a new person with Serenity, these next three shows are all solid winners... they have the action, the humor, and enough peril to keep things very interesting...

Oh, wait...

No, it's Our Mrs. Yolanda day!

Uh, hang on, that's not right... hmmmm..

Oh yeah, it's Our Mrs. Reynolds day!

See the episode that introduced the prettiest little sidewinder you ever did meet.

11th Hour

P.S.

Little bit of trivia: This is another episode FOX showed out of order. During the original broadcast run, Safe and Shindig were pulled out of line and shown after Out of Gas. From what I recall the theory at the time was that Our Mrs. Reynolds and the following two were bigger crowd pleasers and stood a better chance of boosting the ratings.

Of course showing the pilot and not pre-empting shows right off the bat goes a long way to improving ratings too...

With regard to Firefly eps on iTunes, the DVD series can be purchased from CD Wow for £13.99 if you order the Region 2 & 4 box set thats probably about the same cost as buying the lot from iTunes. That box set is no. 5 on the CDWow best seller list.

I think some folks out there might be missin' the point of this.

This isn't about buying Firefly the "cheapest" way you can. This is about buying Firefly a different way than you could before. This is about the opportunity to spread this fine series a little further, to a place where it's not been seen before.

One of the young ladies I'm gifting these to will be watching them on her computer..that's where she watches everything.
That's where the other folks who share a room with her watch everything. No big fancy tv. So I'm hoping that not only will she fall in love with Mal ( I mean Firefly) but that the girls who room with her will too. Cuz how will she resist telling them about it once she's seen it?!

It's about gifting someone with maybe ONE ep when you can't get them to sit down and watch the first disc.. that one ep might hook them easier than a whole disc which they say pleasantly "yeah I'll watch it" but then they don't. It's about comin' at this in a different way.

So thank you to all the "coats out there who are participating and being supportive of this!
I'm sure there were some detractors of the first campaigns chronicled on the DTI DVD... they forged ahead anyway and kept holdin' the line.
If they hadn't I'd have not discovered this wonderful series and this wonderful place.

"You hold. Hold 'til I get back." Mal

Thanks so much FM for restating the core reason for Firefly Fortnight: The great guerilla marketing opportunity these iTunes episodes provide.

If only downloadable, and emailable, Firefly episodes were available when the show was on the air (like eps are being offered now for current shows)... oh the guerilla marketing we fans could have done back then! We could have been spreading Firefly eps as gifts to as many people as we possibly could to get the word out. It would have made such a difference, especially during that long 3 week hiatus, which was so damaging to the show's chances for survival.

We could have saved Firefly while it was still on the air. *sigh*

Ah well, that's air through the engine now. The thing is, the cast are still with us, Joss wants to do more, and studios greenlight projects once they see there's an audience and money to be made.

The Firefly and Serenity DVD sales are staying strong after all this time, and without any official advertising. Those sales numbers are the result of fans' promotional efforts, word of mouth, and the sheer brilliance of the 'Verse.

Again, if there's money to be made... a studio will answer the call.

It's the day for the Firefly episode that centers around our favorite box-dropping-man-ape-gone-wrong...

"Jayne... the man they call JAYNE!"

Today is the day for Jaynestown.

A classic episode and actually also could work well as an introduction episode for a new person. There's gotta be someone, or someones, in your Address Book who stand an excellent chance of lovin' Firefly after seeing Jaynestown. Give it a try... at $1.99 per episode it's so worth doin'!

I was poking around iTunes and as far as I can see they rank TV shows by popularity daily.

Firefly wasn't up there. Actually I was discouraged by how difficult it was to find. I thought it would be more obvious. I had to search.

I do this not to party poop, but to point out how uber-important it is that we get over there and spend some coin to save our beloved. Okay, my beloved, but I'm not alone!

Be well, all!!!

I was disappointed, too, not to find Firefly up on the top of the list of iTune shows. Sorry it took so long to search for the information. On the home page, on the left under "Inside the Music Store", click on "TV Shows". On the right it lists the "Today's Top TV Shows". Scroll down to the bar that says "Top 100 TV shows", and it will give you the list.

If everyone would download or gift one episode (Jaynestown on Thursday and/or Out of Gas on Friday), we could really make a statement that there is a need for more Serenity!

Yes, it would be great to see Firefly make it to the top 100 list. But the campaign depends on fans spreading the word and I'm not sure how many message boards got the info. I've posted the info around, and members of the FFF.net Event Team have been pitching in, but it really takes LOTS of fans promoting the campaign for it to get to the point where it affects the iTunes top 100 list.

Still, the endeavor has its effects in ways other than that list. There was a noticeable bump in Firefly DVD sales on Amazon when Firefly Fortnight started! Yep, that's right. The sales had been holding steady, then suddenly they increased during the beginning part of this campaign! Since there are no official promotions going on, it's reasonable to assume that bump in sales had something to do with our campaign activities. Very encouraging to see!

Also, the core focus of this endeavor goes beyond showing up on the top 100 list... we're using these episodes to reach out to new fans... these eps can be sent via email and connect with people who up untill now either did not know about Firefly, or weren't convinced enough to take the leap and buy a DVD set. But once introduced to the 'Verse, each new fan who is created stands a good chance of continuing to spread the word to others. It's a math thing, we can increase our fan base expodentially this way.

Really hoping this sounded like a positive, exciting post about turning people on to something they will fall in love with. Not all creepy and culty... heh...
