New Galactica Gets Some NBC Play

Network to give series launch a boost.

December 10, 2004 - In another one of those examples of "corporate synergy," the NBC broadcast network will be running a three-hour version of the Battlestar Galactica mini-series on Saturday, January 8th. This is just prior to the launch of the new series on the Sci-Fi Channel the following Friday and the release of the mini-series on DVD.

Sci-Fi Channel and NBC are owned by the same parent company, NBC / Universal and a number of promos for Sci-Fi Channel events, including the Earthsea mini-series, have been appearing on the network, especially during high profile series like ER. According to some sources involved with the series and the network, it's hoped that this extra exposure may offset any possible viewer loss due to the online file trading of the Galactica episodes as they have been broadcast in the UK.

With Universal producing and releasing the Firefly film, Serenity, next year, the possibility exists that the original series may be picked up by the Sci-Fi Channel for cross-promotion purposes. No official word on that possibility as yet but sources have hinted at the possibility in the past. Stay tuned.

Seriously though, Sarge:

Can you imagine how glorious it would feel -- if only for a 12-week period -- to have Firefly back on TV? Even episodes we know by heart, interrupted by those damned, inane, beautiful commercials every five minutes?

For an hour a week, we could pretend that there was justice in the world, that beauty and good (as embodied by Mal-Licious) actually prevail, instead of sloth and ignorance and Mammon. For an hour a week, it would be as though Firefly never left us...

I, for one, would be in Heaven, simply from the feeling of wellness I'd get. Just try wiping the puerile grin from my face.

...Oh, and it'd make good business sense, too. Tie-ins, ya-da, advertising, ya-da, ya-da, New Entertainment Model... Mustn't let the bean-counters get the idea that this isn't about money; and only about Art and what's right.

That'd never do.

Realistically (...okay, 'Cynically'),

zoid

P.S.
In the meantime, let's get somebody on the case, finding out how to become a Nielsen household. Then we can all try to meet the requirements. I figure if we can get 10 of us signed up, that should equate to a couple of hundred thousand 'households'. Then when we all watch "Firefly On SciFi" (TM) this summer, we can blow away every other show in its time slot. That should turn some heads. ...Then, if we could just get the "space monkeys" of Project Mayhem some janitorial and night-watchmen's jobs at F*x...

Ah, but which voiceover will they use? I mean, just think - we get to record the VOICEOVER again! Things we miss with the DVD's...will they use Book first, and switch to Mal, like with Fox?

Better yet: how much would it cost them to do a NEW voiceover...no video...just a voice for a little while...and get this - they could literally advertise Serenity somewhere in there (you'd get it on tape!), and they could even weave in a scene or two in the opening credits if they really wanted to...and they could air the unaired episodes!

*Forrestwolf tries very hard to stop salivating at this, given the poor odds...*

Forrestwolf:

Keep salivating, brother. I get a very good feeling about this one. I think it's gonna happen.

I don't know about Firefly returning to TV with new episodes -- that's a different deal with the F*xheads. But we should be able to get everything that's on the DVD, including the special features, as well as new material from the BDM: trailers, behind-the-scenes looks, and cast and crew interviews, when "Firefly On SciFI" (TM) kicks off around July timeframe.

Don't anybody wet themselves. This ain't even rumor-quality speculation. But if I were in VU's war council, this is exactly how I'd do it: I'd probably show the 2-hour pilot on NBC on a Monday at 8PM EDT. I'd have some 10-second spots throughout promoting the rest of the series on Tuesdays at 9PM EDT on SciFi; that way viewers know they can get their next 'fix' the following night on basic(?) cable. Each Tuesday, you could do an episode of the show, and follow up with taped interviews, 'making of' the series and movie, et cetera. I get the distinct impression that you could just interview Joss for 6 hours (12 30-min chats over footage) about his various works and people would tune in for that alone.

If the movie's as good as I think it's gonna be -- and JW assures us it is -- I could have the whole nation losing its friggin' mind by the time the BDM comes out. If the movie somehow sucks, on the other hand, I'd be swimming for Bora Bora before the mob got their hands on me. Ever seen "The Day of the Locust"? I don't want anyone pulling a Homer Simpson (played by Donald Sutherland, I kid you not) on my a$$...

Your logic does not resemble our Earth logic.

Anyway, if it means anything, Sci Fi Channel in the UK currently shows Firefly (interestingly the version you had in America, complete with voiceover and different credits).

I'm not too sure about showing Firefly on TV. Certainly you don't want to do it too close because otherwise the audience, fresh from having 12 hours of quality sci-fi for nothing would then be asked to fork over $10 to see more. A repeat early in the summer maybe (especially as the summer is something of a low season for TV).

Vivendi-Universal (VU) own NBC, SciFi Channel, and Universal Studios. (They also have a kick-ass computer- and console-game production company, for future reference) JW has hinted that VU has some forward-thinking plans for promoting the BDM, and that this is why the move to September was a good thing. Would the move to September seem so bad if we got all the stuff I prognosticated in my previous post? It'd be worth the wait, for me.

Since VU are willing to do it for "Galactica", it's likely they'd be planning on doing it for Firefly/Serenity, too; especially since the BDM has real potential for revenue, both in theatrical and subsequent DVD releases that "Galactica" cannot match (since it's only a mini and DVD).

The only potential drawback is the sh*theads at F*x. (If any F*x types are reading this and find it offensive: Change your selves, and I'll change the description) They have imposed a moratorium on new episodes. No other TV entity can air new eps; but, the old eps come under a different stricture. These would be treated as a syndication property -- regardless Firefly never made it to 100 eps, the traditional landmark for syndication. Therefore, VU could 'rent' the S1 eps of Firefly, without breaching the 'no new eps for 5 (or 7 or 10) years' ban.

The question becomes: Would F*x allow such syndication, or are they carrying a grudge (as I suspect)? On the one hand, they've got no one but themselves to blame for 'The Firefly Fandom Fenomenon' (c) not paying off for them; on the other hand, they would have to be intelligent to figure that out (I don't see that happening anytime soon).

But VU could appease F*x's illegitimate grievances in some novel ways, too. Remember, the SciFi Channel is not exactly a ratings goldmine, and its advertising revenue has got to be next to nil. So, they could toss F*x some SciFi (and possibly some NBC) ad slots for F*x's primetime dreck, er, 'offerings', as part of the syndication deal.

The added benefit to us Browncoats would be that we'd have F*x ads to jeer and laugh at on "Firefly On SciFi" (TM) commercial breaks. Just think of the party atmosphere at our shindigs: Cheering and laughing and (at least zoid) crying during the Firefly episodes; booing and making not-very-subtly snide remarks at the F*x commercials on the breaks.

As I said before, Heaven...

Cautiously Optimistic,

zoid
