Hey all, I was wondering if any of you knew of any music similar to certain songs from the Firefly soundtrack such as Big Bar Fight. Instrumental Westernish stuff. Any leads?

Well I don't have any specific recomendations but if you look in the bluegrass section of the music store you probably won't be disapointed. Actually most stores probably don't have a seperate section for bluegrass so look for a clerk who doesn't stare at you funny when you ask for it and take their advice.

Check out the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch movie DEAD MAN by Neil Young. Nice mellow instrumental western stuff, bit sad sounding though.

Hell Yes! The Dead Man soundtrack is amazing(only fitting for one of the most amazing westerns ever made!).
Might get a little old after awhile, not as much variety as the Firefly soundtrack, but still really good music.

It's not really like Big Bar Fight, but I've found that Nickel Creek's stuff sounds a bit like the theme song. Someone mentioned bluegrass; Nickel Creek is considered a contemporary bluegrass band and is worth checking out, I think.

Not quite a perfect fit every time, but Leo Kotke's got some good guitar-strumming fingers.

I've been working on my own list of songs that would seem to fit in the Firefly 'verse, some for their sound, some for their content, and some for both. Here's a few that struck me as 'verse-worthy:

I'll Fly Away - Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits (Think of the Battle of
Serenity Valley)
Orange Sky - Alexi Murdoch (Great song for Simon!)
Big Sky Country - Chris Whitley
Windfall - Son Volt
All The Pretty Horses - Calexico
Heroes - David & David
Friend Of The Devil - Lyle Lovett
Southbound Again - Dire Straits
The Devil's Right Hand - Steve Earle
Living With The Law - Chris Whitley
Tear Stained Eye - Son Volt
Sleepwalk - Santo & Johnny
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

The only one that's really an instrumental is "Sleepwalk"; it doesn't so much fit the western-y theme of the show, it just makes me think of being "out in the black", as do most of the others listed. "Into the Mystic" doesn't really "fit", either, but just makes me think of being in the 'verse. 'Course, these days, MOST things make me think 'versally...

There are two CDs by the Irish group The Chieftains:

Down the Old Plank Road and Further Down the Old Plank Road.

Both feature old time American music with their own brand of Celtic tossed in for a great sound. Great guest artists on both as well.

Nickel Creek's music is recorded and distributed by a company called Sugar Hill Records, which is just down the road from me in Durham, North Carolina. Sugar Hill has a lot of Bluegrass artists in their catalog, so you might find it worth while to check out their website:

Well... CRAP. I was listening to local radio today, and heard they were hosting a tribute concert for Chris Whitley, benefiting his daughter Trixie. I had that sinking feeling that something wasn't right. When I got home, I did a Google search, and found out the sad news: Chris Whitley died on November 20, 2005, of lung cancer. He was 45.

Really bums me out. He was one of the first live acts I went to see when I hit Austin back in '91. I'd heard a couple tunes on the radio, loved them, and wanted to go see him play. My wife and I got tickets to see him at the Back Room, and we were just blown away. The club was known more as a heavy metal venue, but Chris didn't fit that mold at all. Closer to alt-country or folk, if anything.

Now I'll feel an even closer kinship between his music and Firefly; both were gone far too early, and neither got anywhere near the recognition they deserved. :(

This is a great list! However, I would certainly add Chris Isaak's amazing song "Graduation Day" to this list. It's a perfect fit for the rest of these and can be found on the film soundtrack to the Ted Demme film "Beautiful Girls" and elsewhere I'm sure.

Ozric Tentacles - Space rock with a deep influenceof world music mixed in. Half their stuff is not in the Firefly vein, but the stuff that is nails it (except for the western influence)especially the exotic cultural melting pot thing.

Besides bluegrass, ask for southern rock at your local music store. I was jamming with a guy recently, and we were rockin' out to "Can't You See (What This Woman is Doin' to Me)" and one of my buddies pointed out that the chord progression is very similar to the Firefly theme song. I briefly considered a filk along the lines of "can't you see what the spaceship's doin' to me," but I lay down until the feeling went away.

And, in case you didn't catch the latest Signal podcast, be sure to check out "In My Sky" at:

It's an incrediblely well done tribute song that would make an awesome theme for the Big Damn Sequel!

A bit off the main theme.

I think Pink Floyd, "Learning to Fly" would fit into the mood of the show quite nicely. What do You think ?
