GUNHAND

Well I just rewatched it and found what I was looking for. Took a screenshot so in my case to prove my crazy theory about Jayne being an ex-cop here's Exhibit A.

You can see the Polizei patch there semi-clearly, also since I blew it up some I recognized it, it's the unit patch for the Bundespolizei Rheinland-Pflaz. That is the German Federal Police, Rhienland-Pfalz. So the patch hasn't been modified up any to make it more Firefly-ish at all. Which could be they were pressed for time, or they just thought it looked shiny and didn't need to change it around any.

In either case, I think somewhere in his past Jayne was a cop, probably corrupt and possibly not so hot at it, but one of some sort.

Ah, Gunhand, but who were the "six men come to kill me once. The best of 'em carried this....I call her Vera."? The jacket is a trophy! Think Jayne actually buys clothes? Everything he wears except his dress up clothes look like they've all been washed together until they're a pretty uniform color of grey.

GUNHAND

Good point, but I doubt if he was taking clothes for trophies he wouldn't have removed the police insignia, ya kill 6 cops (if they were cops) then you probably wouldn't advertise the fact.

Then again Jayne sometimes doesn't make much sense.

I'm not human. That's your only warning.

Sartorial sidebar discussions with Gunhand notwithstanding, this is how I have always interpreted the scene, too: The arrival of the Hands of Blue triggers the change in River's brain activity.

SHUAI

In re: the works of 'Shan-Yu', I think it's probable they're referring to Sun Tzu. He did write The Art Of War, and Sun Tzu talks a lot about meeting and knowing your enemy.
