im looking for a good long fan-fic that captures the essence of Firefly. Not just based on one character, not full of hilarious hijinx, but something like my own kind of freedom. Something long and good, like a second movie.

Recomendations?.....

Here's another vote for Mal4Prez. In her series, Mal is the main character but every other BDH (including Book & Wash since she kinda ignores the BDM) is given proper attention. Hmmm...she actually likes ALL the Firefly characters and doesn't ignore any of them - which is very refreshing.

I aim to write like that, with each story it's own self contained episode yet carrying on a major story-arch, but I fear I'm a work in progress technique and cannon-wise.

However, Mal4Prez definitely is one of the best, as is Screw the Alliance and girlfan's Even Roses Have Thorns fic. Screw the Alliance I do believe is a New York Times Bestselling Author that moonlights as a fic writer. Even Roses Have Thorns is a little River, Simon, Kaylee heavy, but it's not the usual shippy fic and deals with alot of heavy issues. It reads to me like a well grounded second movie.

Also, if you're looking for something that's just like an episode, I would try stillflying.net as they are an entire episodes written by fabulous writers in script form. It's genius.

I gotta go, Kaylee the cat is clawing my pants for attention....

I can do you some lengthy fic, but you'll need to decide if it's any good.

Canon, post-BDM, and so far chonological, though with a mildly disturbing Jayne fetish.

Plus a mad one-shot crossover with Terry Pratchett.

Thanks for all the contributions people. Ive already read most of the still-flying.net scripts and i thought they were awesome, exept for river, who no one can write for. And as you guys have already commented, i really do want something pretty darn close to an episode or a movie.

MAL4PREZ

Thanks for the recs guys! Makes my day.

My own recs: when I first joined fandom and expected nothing from fanfic but porn and fan-fantasies (which I now know to call Mary Sue fic), I got pointed to ScrewtheAlliance and Guildsister. Both proved my expectations wrong! Excellent writers, both of them. Great stories.

Leiasky's recent work (On the Edge and following fics) are also good rides. S/K is central, but not overwhelmingly so. The whole post-BDM crew is in on the plot. Her earlier stuff is also entertaining but more S/K romance focused.

There are plenty of other good writers, but most I can think of focus on pairings.

I think I will shamelessly plug my own recently completed story... Spinning Out.

Political intrigue, intimate moments, bloody gun violence, coarse humor, character conflicts, and the occasional grammatical error are not mutually exclusive in my first fan fic. I also added a hyperlinked index at the top of each chapter.
