You know, last week the overnights were *so* off, I don't know how much I can trust them.

But, if the real ratings are that much better than last week (3.7 i believe), we're in pretty good shape!

A 3.0 is still a terrible rating. I'd like to think that Fox would evalute that and say it's progress from the prior week, but it's still really poor.

Let's face it. That's complete crap. But i think they'll keep airing Firefly due to the fact they've got nothing else available right now.

damn you people are negative! It can't go from what it was to a 12.3/9 rating in one week. But it's growing right now wich is good...FOX won't cancel a show with rating that are going up even if they are low cause well it's going up and there's a chance for it to have decent rating one day if it continue that way...So as long as the audiance don't start dropping again the show is not in danger

We're not negative, we're realistic and it wouldn't bother me too much a low number, if it we're a decent increase, but the fact Buffy and Angel are scoring much higher than this is a pretty bad indication. Might as well soften the blow for ourselves.

(NOTE: I didn't say it's gonna get cancelled, but it's dangling dangerously near it.)

Yeah John Doe is FOX's new pride and "success story" and is only 0.9/1 higher of a rating more than firefly, but then again, Anchor Shows are expected to have higher ratings than the show that preceeds it, but maybe fOX will overlook it because Firefly is a brand new show on Friday Nights.

If you know anyone that can help my screenwriting career, please help! And yes, I am self-advertising here. Hehehe, me such a little devil.

I think anything up is good and stays the ax at the moment. 3.0 vs. 2.7 is up and overall in the scheme of things yeah the number sucks but it was up not down. You can spin it both ways. I think they will stick with it thru December...

Want the show to stay on air ?

Yes ? SO tell you're friends and family to watch it !

If you can get at least 1 or 2 people to watch it, that'll certainly help the ratings.

actualy the only thing that could get the rating up is you convince someone from a Nielsen fammily to watch it...but yes by telling the most people you can you have chance to tell a person who's part of it

Here in MN, last friday's FF wasn't shown until 11:30pm because of the tv coverage of Paul Wellstone's death. That must have hurt the ratings at least a little. When doing the ratings, do they take those sorts of things in consideration?

Primetime Metered Market Ratings

Friday 10/25/02

Friday 10/25/02

Household Rating/Share
NBC (9.2/15), CBS (6.3/10), ABC (6.3/10), Fox (3.8/6),
WB (3.0/5), UPN (2.2/4), PAX (1.4/2)

-Friday's Winners:
Dateline (NBC), Law & Order; Special Victims Unit (NBC)

-Ready For a Full Season Renewal:
Hack (CBS)

-ThisClose to Being Labeled a Loser:
John Doe (Fox)

-Friday's Losers:
Firefly (Fox), Robbery Homicide Division (CBS)

-Ratings Breakdown:
As usual, NBC won Friday with a first place finish in every half-hour thanks to its combination of the just axed Providence (7.4/12), Dateline (8.2/13) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (12.1/20). CBS, which tied ABC for second on the night in the overnights, got some much needed good news with older-skewing 9 p.m. drama Hack (#2, 7.3/12) up 11 percent from its 48 Hours Investigates lead-in (#2: 6.6/11) and 12 percent above its week ago delivery (6.5/10 on Oct. 18). Compared to year ago occupant That's Life (6.0/10), Hack was up by 22 percent. While that's a positive to make note of, 10 p.m. remains a sore spot for the Eye net with Robbery Homicide Division third at a mere 4.8/ 8. Yes, the slip called cancellation should be popping up at any moment for Tom Sizemore and company.

Over at ABC, annual repeat holiday specials It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (#2: 6.8/11) and Boo to You, Winnie the Pooh (#3: 5.7/ 9) opened the night followed by almost duplicate overnight deliveries for America's Funniest Home Videos (#3: 6.3/10) and 20/20 (#2: 6.4/11). Although 20/20 remains a magnet for the gray haired set, ABC finished first for the night in adults 18-49 from 8-10 p.m. Yes, there's still like left in America's Funniest Home Videos.

On Fox, Buffy, the Vampire Slayer isn't the only Joss Whedon sci-fi hour likely to go down the tubes this year with the recently introduced Firefly slipping to a series low (and fourth place) 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m. Firefly is also expected to finish fourth in the hour among adults 18-49. Minus any lead-in support, John Doe (4.3/ 7) also hit rock bottom with an also anticipated fourth place finish in adults 18-49.

Despite The WB going the repeat route with sitcoms What I Like About You (#5: 3.0/ 5), Sabrina (#5: 2.7/ 4), Reba (#4: 3.7/ 6) and Greetings From Tucson (#5: 2.6/ 4), it still managed to beat dead-in-the-Friday rating waters UPN (movie: Woo, 2.2/ 4) by a notable 36 percent.

Finally, on PAX repeat made-for Beyond the Prairie: The True Story of Laura Ingalls Wilder scored an above average 1.5/ 2 from 8-10 p.m. followed by Diagnosis Murder (R) at a 1.5/ 2.

To tell you the truth, I don't know how accurate weekly ratings can be, other than a comparison of the shows themselves. It would seem that they would be a week behind. This is my logic:

An episode is shown. As far as the restof the world, no biggie. However, for a select few who see the show, they end up telling other people about it. Someone from the entertainment media reports on the show, and the following week, more people start watching. This then causes the ratingsto go up.

So, with this logic, the 3.x ratings were based on "Jaynestown". We the fans were very impressed with "Out of Gas", and so this Friday's episode should benefit from it. If the new episode is anywhere as good as "OOG", then I think it may even break the 90 mark.

But then, SCI-FI has always been a nich type of programming. What were the ratings for B5, ST:TNG, DS9, "Battlestar Galatica", etc in the first year?

BTW: Anyone know how "Andromeda" is doing - I just found a station showing the 3rd season. I've missed 1/4 of the 2nd season and 1/4 of the 3rd season so far, because of the syndication situation. Maybe that could be a route if Fox does want to axe it. The point is that FOX has not said anything yet, and has bought 3 more episodes. We have no idea what clauses were in the contract, either. Joss may have been garunteed 13 episodes.

Well, now that I've been all over the map here, I will shut up now.

================================================
Today, as I was having lunch, I was watching the birds in the trees and wondered what it would be like if birds knew that people didn't like being shat on. As I was thinking this, a bird shat on my sandwich. Perhaps I knew too much...

The overall numbers went up from "Jaynestown" which is a good thing any way you cut it. They still need to improve.

While the numbers are what they are, this guy - Marc Berman - has hated FF since before the premiere. If you look back at his column, he always spins the numbers negatively for FF: proof that scifi doesn't work on friday, nobody likes the western/scifi mix, etc., etc. The fact that he is talking about BTVS "going down the tubes" is a perfect example of his bias. UPN will pull out all the stops to have Buffy come back for season eight.

He's entitled to his opinion, but I bristle when I see his lame ass opinions quoted as fact.

I guess ME shouldn't have rejected his Buffy script or something.

Here's what was the growth in total viewer
-------------------------------------
2 weeks ago: Firefly: Fox/Friday 8 p.m. (#96: 4.31 million; A18-49: #91T, 1.9/ 7): F
-------------------------------------
Last friday:
Firefly: Fox/Friday 8 p.m. (#89: 4.38 million; A18-49: #85T, 2.0/7): F

so it's almost a 100 000 viewer growth...that's pretty good IMO

Yes I'm in agreement it is after all a good business decision to hold on till it finds it's own demographic.
