Shepherd's Tale delayed/cancelled?

It hasn't been released yet and I can't find any info anywhere about it since the initial press release last June.

It's possible, although due to the popularity of the previous Serenity comics, I would've thought it would be unlikely. More likely it's that these things take time to write/draw/create, and it's not like films where a lot of news articles surrounding actors, locations, posters and trailers come up. I'd say it's on its way, we just have to wait patiently...

I don't remember if a writer for the series was announced, but even if Joss doesn't actually write it, he'll probably have his hands all over it. I can't imagine that he'd just sort of push off Book's origin story after all this time.

My guess is that the delay is nothing more sinister than the fact that DOLLHOUSE, which seems a little troubled, is probably taking up more of his time than expected. Once DOLLHOUSE is in hand, we'll see THE SHEPHERD'S TALE.

I remember reading something somewhere (probably on whedonesque.com) that it was going to be released late '09 or early '10. We go faaaar too long in between these comics.

There was never an official release date. It'll come when it comes. On a guess though, The Dollhouse is probably the focus of Joss' attention right now.

The weird thing is comic books seem to get delayed all the time - I don't know any other media that gets pushed at short notice so frequently.

Comic delays are interesting. Part of it, I think, is that sales don't drop dramatically with *reasonable* delays. I imagine that the majority of comic collectors fall into one of two categories:

1) Know exactly when their titles come out and hit the store regularly (often weekly). Those collectors might be frustrated by delays, but they'll eventually get the titles.

2) Casual visits to pick up "whatever came out." Again, not really missing stuff it if comes out a week or two (or even three months!) late.

Compare that to TV: If FIREFLY is suddenly and unexpectedly moved to, say, 3 pm on a Saturday afternoon, most folks won't know about it!

Pair that with the fact that comics are generally produced by freelancers (who are often young and underpaid), and delays, even at the big companies, are not a huge surprise.

BIG delays, I think, have to do with company investment. Joss Whedon delays a comic for Dark Horse? No big deal, unless it's a tentpole item they've started to market--because they haven't really spent any money on it. Joss falls down on a TV series or movie, and the production company is going to get pretty annoyed because they've invested in sets, equipment, cast, etc!

While movies certainly shift, advertising usually starts 6 month (if not a year) in advance of release date. Comics are solicited three months in advance.
