Firefly mmo?

Just a question has anyone tried to make a firefly mmo? With something like maybe the unreal engine or even a mud. I've seen an unreal mod for star trek that is very well done its called rpgx. Please post here if you know of one thats being worked on or if you have any experience in working on things like this.

A company named Multiverse bought the rights a couple years back, hoping to make Firefly the flagship for their new gaming technology...namely something like the Unreal engine, but on a more grand scale. A single fully-developed platform that could be skinned to make a multitude of MMO's.

Their idea...really hasn't gone anywhere, they're got some MMO's active, but none are popular. When they realized the scale of the project Firefly would be, they shelved it.

The fact was their system just wasn't big enough to handle something like Firefly, something that would require many different worlds, space-play, spaceship play, etc etc....

So...no, there's not a Firefly MMO, and there probably won't ever be one. :(

A fan game would be entering into dangerous territory, since both Fox and Universal are so keen on protecting their property, but I know of one group of people working on an MMORPG, they aren't professional and not very far along and the work will take forever, but they at least seem serious.

I think I've heard of another besides that one, and I imagine the idea has been brought up bunches of times, so it wouldn't surprise me if there weren't more.

About a month ago, there was a thread that discussed your idea, of modding an existing game engine (particularly a FPS) into having slight RP elements (roles like fighter, medic, pilot, mechanic, etc). Other ideas that were discussed were the game loading jobs not unlike how other FPSers would load maps, and having an overworld like Persephone be a big MMORPG melting pot and mingling area between jobs. Ships could be combination "crew" houses (like a guild house in MMORPGS) and job loading chat rooms.

Modding an existing game would be definitely easier than working from scratch, which might not be a bad thing.

Thank you for responding to my question, you did help quite a bit. I did find a nwn mod on the net that didnt look to bad though it only takes 8 players and a dm. The genaric mmo did look like a good idea i wish they had the motivation to finish a firefly project. I have seen some shinny mods for both nwn and unreal. I may contact the writters of those mods and inquire about help on this kind of project. There is however some good muds firefly themed. I'll check them out and let you all know what I think.
