would like to talk to you about making a viedo game. you are a new caption and you have to buy a ship find a crew and get jobs to keep flying.You will be able to buy different kinds of ships and upgrade them. In this verson you can run into serenity or even ask them for help if there near you but at what cost, mabye money, food, supplys or even a favor to be named at a later date.

I think you're imparting many qualities onto captions that don't hold in the normal world. Though people here do enjoy adding funny captions to pictures. Maybe it's right up the browncoat alley.

For starters what are you trying to accomplish? Is this just a fun "what type of Firefly/Serenity game would you like to play" thread or is this a project you're really trying to create?

If it's a real project then what genre of game are you trying to make? MMO, action adventure, FPS, RPG, etc.

Also, there was talk of an MMO a while back. I didn't follow it closely, but I thought rights issues between Universal and Fox killed it. Do you have an agreement with one of those companies or is this a fan project? Even a fan project will likely need to clear their work with both companies.

This is a fan made idea we plan to make as much as we can and send it to joss because he will know what to do with it. We are looking at like a wow thing (world of warcraft) where u can travel to diff planets and visit some towns. With a lot of customization to your charter. Looking at like a mmo rpg

Always check the archives (or even google it) before posting "new" ideas.

If you did that, you would have found a MMO fan project that started about a year and a half ago that has had to change directions because they didn't realize the scope that they were attempting to undertake:

To give you an idea why, it takes professional teams 5+ YEARS to develop a MMO. So, how long do you think that it'll take you and your buddies? i.e. It's not a tractable project.

I think it should also be pointed out that technically speaking, using IP that isn't yours is illegal. So, even if you are a fan project, you stand a very real chance of getting shutdown (at best) or sued into oblivion (at worse). That's something else that should be noted when dealing with companies as litigious as Fox and Universal. But, that's a risk that you'll have to assess for yourself.

I could go on, but the archive are full of such things said over and over to people who register and with there first post, post a grand project never to be seen or heard of again. Needless to say, this is a very bad idea with many many reasons why in the archives if you would care to look.

NOTE: Joss has nothing to do with Firefly/Serenity aside from being the creator. Which means exactly nothing when others hold the legal rights to it. It's that legalities thing again.

I don't really have any ideas but I wanted to say that it is a really good idea. I have never played a MMO but I would definitely try a Firefly one. Firefly might not have the most fans in the world but most of us are hardcore enough to at least give the game a try if they made it, probably more than enough to make an MMO profitable.

Basically, to avoid copyright issues, he's making his game more of a homage with a lot of shoutouts. And he's releasing new worlds and instances episodically, so we only have to map about four small-to-medium sized areas right now, and script some quests (also allowable in the engine), and get some music/sfx. I'm working on the character sprites and item sprites.

He got a basic RPG maker kind of engine, and paid someone to mod it for raids and stuff. Engine's all done. :D

It was moving pretty fast. I'm going a little slow because I work during the week, and he's kinda waiting on me to do the hairstyles for the player characters, but otherwise I've finished the basic paperdolls for the in-game sprites. :)

Scale? I'm not familiar with that term. I don't know much about programming except for scientific modeling. I'm just the artist.

Works with 10, ok with 100, unplayable with 1000. There was a web based game a while back that had similar issues. But, that's another story.
