CHARLES

Hey all,

I happened to come across an artile on scifi.com today about how NBC seems to be planning a spin-off of the yet-to-be-released Van Helsing. The series, which would be named Transylvania, would take place in the same world as Van Helsing, but not necessarily have any of the major characters I guess... not sure exactly how it works. But the reason I'm posting this here is the following:

Van Helsing is being produced by one of the dang shiniest movie studios around... Universal!

The spin-off idea is further signs of the growing relationship between Universal and NBC... and it really does make me wonder... if NBC can possibly be investing in the spin-off of a movie that hasn't even been shown yet, it might just up the chances of NBC restarting another series that, even though it didn't do well on its first network, has shown some very nice numbers in DVD sales (hey, those sales brought back Family Guy!) It's just speculation on my part... but it does show some signs of hope for the future, I think, that we might see Firefly back on the small screen as a series... especially if we browncoats keep up the good work of converting people to the cause of bringing it back (I'm almost up to 20 myself! Here's hoping!

The other thing going against a TV spinoff of Van Helsing, is that (SPOILERS AHEAD) . . .

According to all but one previewer at Ain't it Cool News, Van Helsing "sucks nuhts", and that's a direct quote from someone in the audience during a NY screening -- but without the "h". There's one scathing review after another at AICN.

Dammit.

Yeah, but all those folks at AICN hated the Mummy movies, particularly the second. I thought those movies were great. Certainly the first was better, but the second was plenty fun as well. AICN reviewers habitually hate all CGI as well (except Gollum), so I'm gonna see Van Helsing and make up my own gorram mind!

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Hugh Jackman wouldn't be in it. Which is, frankly, why 5 out of 5 girls I very scientifically polled are going to see it.

BECKINSALE

I like your thoughts, Charles. I'd love for this to be a sign of possible things to come.

I don't predict the Van Helsing spin-off being a success (for reasons already mentioned), but you never know. I guess time will tell.

As for the movie... I can't wait to see it. And I've just gotta mention, I'm an exclusively interested in men-folk kinda female, but I'm seein' the movie for Kate Beckinsale (see my username) mostly. Besides the premise of the film being my kind of thing. But I certainly couldn't care less about Hugh Jackman.

Also, I'm not a big fan of CGI unless it's done right (read: serves a real purpose). But I'm hoping it's a great film!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I for one am looking forward to the movie when it comes out. I like Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckingsale and the story seems to be reasonably good. My son loves all of the vampire, werewolf, and Frankenstein's monster movies, so I will be taking him to see this one.

"Transylvania" on NBC? Sounds like a one way ticket to cancellation. Sure it might get reasonable ratings the first couple of weeks by riding the coattails of the movie Van Helsing, but those ratings will soon drop off and NBC will cancel it. It is just not inline w/ their current programming.
