Hi,

I've never had cause to post here, so in fact I only just joined today. But during my drive home to Texas from the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival(where I taught one of my fellow musicians how to play the wedding tune from "Our Mrs. Reynolds"), I kept myself awake by filking everyone's second favorite Firefly song. Here it is:

The Ballad of Joss

Joss, the man they call Joss . . .

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Our Joss saw the viewers’ hearts breakin’,
He heard the Browncoats’ lament,
He saw the Fox network takin’,
His show in a way that made no sense.
(He said) "You can’t do that to my program,
Can’t grind it under your heel.”
So he took all the cast,
And well, now at last,
They’ve landed a Big Damn Movie deal!

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Fox cancelled his program, but that was their loss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Now here is what separates Whedon,
From writers who slave in the core,
The man they call Joss,
Well, he said to Fox,
“I’m going where no show has gone before.”
He told us about reavers,
He told us about sin,
He took us to the black,
And we ain’t comin’ back,
‘till all those crazy Browncoats rise again!

He wrote about spaceships and shepherds and whores,
Stood up to the networks and gave ‘em what for.
Then he made a movie and showed ‘em who’s boss--
The creator of Firefly, the man they call Joss!

Hope you like it,

Fantastic! Really sums it up about our tenth (or is it eleventh?) BDH, Joss.

I thought the wedding song, by the way, was mostly a redone Pacabel's Canon. Is there more to it than that? It's still one of my favorite Firefly songs, of course :)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site Cedric, and what an incredible entrance!

I love your Ballad of Joss. I really hope that he sees this. I may have to get my friend to do this up in caligraphy and give it to him at Dragon Con, with your permission of course.

Y'know, I kind of suspect the same thing--there's a strange similarity there, but I haven't nailed it down yet. The tune got stuck in my head, so I had to figure it out on my fiddle. Then I had to figure out the jig from "Safe." When, oh, when will they release the soundtrack!

At the faire, I taught the tune to a whistle player and then played the answering parts on my fiddle, the way they did in the show. I got goosebumps.

Absolutely! Just so it's covered, everyone has blanket permission to post that filk anywhere, so long as they keep the credits intact.

Oh, I forgot the joke verse that hit me around hour seven of the trip, while I was hitting a McDonald's bathroom. (It was a *long* trip.)

Now, here is what separates Firefly
From other shows you’re likely to see—
It’s meaningful and witty,
And the setting’s really gritty,
And the theme song is about Serenity.
It’s a little like a western,
It's a little like X-Files,
It’s better than Trek,
And it's funnier than Shrek,
And it beats out Andromeda by miles!

Hi and Welcome,

This is extra-shiny! How about an mp3 of it so we can put it on our iPods? It would join my ever-growing Firefly playlist.

LOL! High-larious! Definitely pass out lyrics at the next con and have everyone break into verse as soon as Joss gets on stage!

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Wow, I'm really touched by the response my little filk is getting. Thanks for the encouragement, everyone. And if you happen to sing it for our Mr. Whedon, and he likes it, feel free to mention that my band is available for weddings, bar mitzvahs, and movie premieres.

BTW, as I was playing down at the front gate of the Oklahoma Renaissance Festival last Saturday, I spotted a guy waiting in line to buy tickets, and he was wearing a "Fighting Elves" tee-shirt. :-) So I went over and whispered, "Browncoats rule," just to watch him grin. Then I invited him to our show, which he attended. Afterward, I pulled him aside--since I don't typically sing sci-fi filks when I'm working at a renfaire--and sang "The Ballad of Joss" for him. He seemed really pleased; he lamented the rarity of Browncoats in Oklahoma and expressed envy that I lived close to one of the cities that had a sneak peak. I consoled him by explaining that I was up here in Muskogee, Oklahoma, during both sneak peaks in Austin. I'll just have to wait for September, like all the huddled masses . . .

Keep flyin',

Cedric
