Per the script...

It's a Callahan fullbore autolock, customized trigger and double cartridge thourough(sic)-gage.

Probably isn't what you're looking for, but it's the best I got.

Vera is a heavily customized prop gun, originally The Gun in the movie "Showtime," which is why you probably won't find anything close. Do some searching for that movie and maybe you'll come up with some more details. I did once, but can't recall much about it.

I don't have any facts to support this opinion, but I have to agree with the idea that it is just a modified prop gun. I am not a weapon expert, but I have done a little research from time to time on the subject and I realy really doubt that Vera is modified from any modern firearm.

If you want to look yourself, this is a pretty interesting webpage:

If Vera came from anything, it would either be a sub-machine gun or assult rifle, so I would suggest looking in those areas. However, I wouldn't get your hopes up.

Yep, cool though it looks, it's pure hollywood.

Vera, Mal's revolvers, of course the laser pistol, the lassiter (sp?) and the pencil-thin pistol Inara has at the end of Trash are all either totally fake or so cobbed-together as to be unrecognizeable as real.

Best as I can tell, all the other firearms in the show are commercailly available today ('cept maybe the dual .50 cal that Mal shoots down the skiff with in the pilot).

Rather than AK-47, Vera prolly started out more from an AR15(M-16) type rifle. It was spac-i-fied obviously. The AR15 platform is ultimately customizable and you could dress one up to look very much like Vera. Custom parts would have to be made of course. It would seem she has close to a 1" caliber from the rounds in the magazine and butt stock. In the show, Jayne states that Vera could not(or barely) breach the hull but easily shoots through the windows of the carrion house which seems to be contradictory. But it is in the script so what are you gonna do?

Hope this helps.

Interestingly enough, you can certainly purchase a dual or even quad .50 cal. It is not the easiest thing to do, but if the have the patience, the money, and can pass the rigorous background checks you too can own one. Oh, provided you live in a country or state that has not outlawed it. Don't forget to purchase a few pallets of ammo.

I always thought a Saiga-12K was the closest thing to a modern day Vera. Slap a scope on it and some do some other cosmetic things and you got one damn intimidating weapon.

BTW the AA gun Mal uses in the pilot was not .50 cal. It looked like a 30mm to 50mm gun. I think the type of gun is mentioned in the commentary- 53mm I think.

Looking at available screen grabs and reviewing the dvd, you could very well be right. Slugs, or more the point, sharp, jacketed slugs would be quite formidable. The AR15 platform could still be a contender for creating Vera, using a flat top upper, of course. Maybe an AR10 for larger caliber. If caliber in a concern, there are .50s available. But then again, this is all speculation of a movie gun.

Jayne says Vera could -barely- breach the hull, meaning she could, but it'd be after a few rounds went through the same spot, I imagine. He's sayin Vera's pretty tough (enough to go through Serenity if he tried), but sometimes not tough enough.

I'm more upset that we never see him use Vera in the assault on Niska or such luck. Though the ammo for such a weapon must be pricey and difficult to comeby outside the core's seedier parts.

Jayne does use Vera right as they enter the skyplex... he shoots into the dock control center. I assume he used Vera for this because it was probably the same vaccuum proof material as the control room for the net in OMR

In the commentary Nathan says it's 50mm. I figured it was just a mistake on his part and it's actually .50 cal. I don't know diddly about weapons that big.

I just searched around for this screen cap.

Its a 12mm AA Gun, so its .47 cal (so I guess you could round up to .50 cal) if I did my math right.

So your correct that its .50 cal but its probably not a Browning .50 cal that is commonly available.

Unfortunately I’m not familiar with AAA guns of this size. But I think that most modern attack aircraft would laugh off a .12 mm bullet unless they score a lucky shot in the engine, avionics, or cockpit.

The idea of Vera is somewhat illogical, ideally a rifle firing a bullet of such a large caliber would not be a carbine, or having a barrel shortened for close quarters combat. They do exist but are generally not very accurate, the ratio of the bullet d. to barrel length makes it more akin to an oversized pistol... A real life version would probably be a semi auto barrett with custom mods, if you had the dough and perserverence for such an endeavor
