Pitiful really, took me three years to convert someone other than my mother (I don't get out much), but I still wanted to share the fact that I finally actually managed to do it. Someone I know over the internet, I finally hear that she’s about to watch and wait a bit, and then I get the first response:

he's playing with dinosaurs
MINE IS AN EVIL LAUGH

That was all I needed to know I succeeded, of course knowing what I do about her personality I was pretty sure to begin with. Other nice stuff came filtering back as well. For example “Kayleigh” is cute, and reminds her of herself.

-

To finish off on a profound bit:

Her: guh, humanity sucks my ass
I: what brought that about?
Her: just the fact that every actually intelligent show or musician is not properly understood or appreciated because the general population is comprised of morons who cannot understand the brilliance they are seeing/hearing

On the one hand this is true, but on the other hand we wouldn’t have Serenity coming or the song Starry, Starry Night if everyone lived on the same level as Survivor.

I couldn't even convert my mom. She thought the show was boring. This from the person who thinks that Survivor and The Amazing Race are classics.

I'm still working on it, though. Next month in my e-zine I'm posting a kinda "memories of the series"-type article. My readers are not the typer to have seen the show, so maybe it will spark some interest. I'll keep y'all updated.

I've been lending the DVD boxset to anyone who'll agree to watch them for quite a while, and of course everyone loves it and assures me they'll be going to see the movie. But it's only recently that I got what I've been telling myself would constitute a full conversion - one of people who borrowed the set has bought his own. WTG me!

I know you don’t want to hear this, no one ever does when it’s family, but she’s too far gone.

I guess I've been fairly lucky so far. Everyone I've leant my DVDs to has become a fan of the show. I hope I can keep up the track record, since I just leant them out again last night and have at least one more person I promised to loan them to when I get them back again.

The person I just got will buy her own, I know that much, so I guess I've got a future convert by that defintion.

It's not a question of people watching the show not liking it for me; it's a question of getting them to watch it.

If your friend is a dinosaur fan, please direct her to our informal thread:

Also, if you start talking about conversion, people really are going to think we are a cult! See:

Haaa.. I had *great* fun this past week. I converted my GRANDMOTHER. How awesome is that? We averaged 3 episodes a night when I came home from school. By "Bushwacked" she was asking incrediously why it was cancelled (and then decided as we continued viewing the episodes because of hte glorifying Inara's role as Companion and the raunchy sex jokes and innuendos {which didn't keep her from giggling, though, heh)).

I've converted one friend and I'm working on a campaign this summer to bring Firefly to my friends home theaters. *nods*

Personally, I don't think it has anything to do with skill. Firefly just has a way of selling itself to anybody willing to take 10 minutes to sit down and watch it.

(Of course, that 10 minutes turns into 20... 50... 2 hours... 6 hours... etc.....)

Congrats,Chris. Good to hear there's one more fan added to the list. Curiously, I've had a less than stellar time in recruitment myself. 2 Buffy/Angel fans I thought would be a shoe in, but barely got either of them to finish watching the whole DVD set. One just 'couldn't get into it', what ever that's suppose to mean. The other said she 'liked it', but didn't elaborate too much. It wasn't untill the trailer came out online that I was able to get anyone really excited over the BDM.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

My problem is that though I am a college student my friends are just now graduating high-school and have the attention span you'd expect of that. I don't know why they do, I didn't at their age, but getting ten minutes from them is difficult.

I’ve got to say, I don’t mind being a cult. I’ve got a whole stack of bibles and it just keeps getting bigger. I like religion, and all of it’s intricacies.

In three hundred years the phrase, “Lenny Bruce died for our skins,” will have blossomed into full tax exempt status. If we’ve got people worshiping our BDHs go for it, so long as no one kills them all off in a bloody crusade.

I lent my sister my 1st Firefly disc (couldn't part with all of them at once) & after she finished that, she went ahead & bought her own.
Also I converted a Buffy fan I met online. She asked for Firefly for Xmas at my urging & is now a fan.
There's a Star Wars fan at work (I'm a SW fan also) that I'm working on now. Also, the Sci-Fi Channel will be running Firefly starting July 22. That should pick up a lot of new fans. I hear they're actually gonna run the episodes IN ORDER! Like Joss intended.

Personally I've found that people need to be able to sit thru about 15-20 mins of exposition and backstory in the pilot to get to the point when things start to really get going, culminating in the big payoff at the end. But I've known SAP (Short Attention Span) folks who couldn't sit through even 5 minutes -- to set up a whole universe!

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Sci Fi has always had common sense, it's just it's impossible to predict when they will use it.

Okay, I must admit, there are only two shows on TV I watch with any regularity, LOST and Battlestar Galactica. So I guess deep down inside I do recognize SFC has some common sense.

(BTW, for those who have not seen it, the new BSG is also a great show! And Serenity made a quick cameo appearance in the mini-series/pilot.)

I was converted by a Buffy fan, we are casually converting more Buffy and Angel fans via e-mail and DVD lending.

I also have friends coming down in October so if they fancy a movie night, being Buffy fans, i'll pass it on by them.

I do this mainly cos I like the cast (they seem like nice people) and nice people should have nice jobs. Working on this seems like fun! Furthermore, Joss may finally get some serious moola and finally be able to do his stuff, his way, rather than the purse-holders version of his stuff!

That would be a worthwhile reason! I wonder what PURE un-adulterated Whedon would be like?

it always feels good to convert someone. whenever i converted someone to be a browncoat, they always said 2 things:

1) "this show's awesome!" or something like that
2) "why did they cancel this???"

Since I got the DVDs, not long after they first came out, I’ve been trying to get my sister to watch even a minute, she wouldn't. I put Serenity on in the background while plying cards, she’s at Shindig now.

I seem to be having a little luck lately.
