If you are going to be insulting, (and I don't blame you, I'm just as mad at the e-bay people as you are) try to do it with a little better grammer, punctuation, and panache.

Just a suggestion.

Define 'normal'. For me, I'd want any enthusiastic Browncoat to be sitting beside me enjoying the hell out of the BDM and not feeling like they'd just been raped. As there are more and more screenings, the novelty of all this wears a bit thin, ( especially in those original cities ) so there's less a need to make a quick $$. If one's going to charge a small fee, I'd say that anything over 10$ profit is really being contrary to the whole spirit of spreading the good word.

My $0.02 worth.

I'd have to agree. I'm a little ticked that these people who exploit those of us not fortunate enough to land tickets. My advice though is just not to stoop to their levels. Real Browncoats wouldn't go and buy loads of tickets to sell, we'd go give them away, or sell them to the devout fans who showed up even without tickets, at cost might I add. I had the fun thought that if I had an extra ticket, I'd do an auction for charity. I haven't been posting long, but I've been visiting this place for at least a year and half now, and the true spirit of a Browncoat is one that gives back when fate smiles upon them. These e-bay scalpers don't deserve to be given the title of Browncoat.

My intentions were to buy 8 tickets (knowing that one MN Browncoat gave me all his info to buy him 12 tickets and that way, he and our friends would be covered).

My 8 tickets were going to be for me, my spousal, my brother, my neighbor and then I'd have 4 tickets to "sell". My price was going to be one filled grocery bag for Second Harvest Food Shelf per ticket.

If there's a 4th round of previews, that is still my intention.

Here's to hoping they report you and get you some nice ebay justice.

Leave the people alone. It doesn't matter if you like what they are doing or not. If the listing is illegal, report it. If you want to whine, stop and wait until you grow up to the point where you no longer want to whine. If you never grow up...too bad.

I'm tired of all the complaining about Ebay. Every item on Ebay is an aftermarket sale. If you want all of Ebay taken down that's great. It's not going to happen though. You'll just manage to annoy people and generate hate if you kick your feet and scream a lot.

I didn't get tickets this time around for the screening. I'll see if there are any scalpers for my screening and be very happy if I get tickets. God bless the scalpers.

There's a difference between buying things that then accumulate later or buying things that are available to everyone that will be an investment for later and buying things that are in short supply with the intention of depriving fans of them just so you can charge them more.

You don't think it's wrong for scalpers to push up the price for the general public? For fans that have tried straight away to get tickets and lost out to scalpers. If Joss or bands etc. didn't care about the fans then they could charge 100 quid+ a ticket easy and make money. But they don't and it's not their attention to put the prices too high because then the average fan can't afford it but they could if they wanted to. So what gives scalpers the right to buy the majority of tickets within the first hour and then charge massively inflated prices for them?

Ticket scalping is a not very nice thing to do. To charge someone 80 quid extra for a ticket just because you were 2 minutes before them in the queue. It's definitely a dishonourable thing to do .

Yep. IMO, scalping is just like the attempted profiteering during the hurricanes in Florida. I hope all the ebay sellers get burned by fake bids and end up having to eat the cost of the tix (and the theater owners open up the leftover seats to *real* browncoats)

Everyone had the exact same chance to get tickets as the next person. I could have not gone to lunch and been around when tickets went on sale. I chose to go to lunch. I obviously had my priorities set so that I would not get tickets.

Everyone also has a chance at those scalped tickets. Don't tell me that someone might not have as much money as the next guy so it's unfair. They made choices that put them in that position. Maybe they wanted to start a family and raise kids. Well there are sacrifices. Money might be one of them.

If I choose to spend my money on overpriced tickets on ebay, I'm not being taken advantage of. I'm buying something I want. It's not even something I need. It's just another choice.

All the scalpers are doing is delivering convenience at a price. So, someone didn't spend the time to refresh fandango every 30 seconds for a week. Instead they chose to spend their time working and making the money to pay a scalper. That's their choice.

I admit that it's not the nicest thing to do in the world, but it's not the hell on earth that some people are making it out to be.

Heb,

You said that it is the scalpers that jack up the price. How are they jacking it up? I see most of the tickets that go on sale start at cost. It's the volume of people that want the ticket that causes the prices to go up until only one other person is willing to pay for it.

If you took away the scalpers, what do you get? The same problem, too many people and not enough tickets. Except this time the only ticket holders are those few lucky ones who were present for that magical 10 minute window. The guy who wanted the tickets so badly that he would have paid 150 dollars for one ticket misses out.

Hell, if someone offered me 300 dollars I would probably sell it to them. Firefly is worth more than 100 dollars to me. If I didn't get tickets this round, I would have probably gone on ebay and bought one for 100 dollars and still think it was a good deal, because it's worth more than 100 dollars to me. However, it's not worth more than 300. It might be worth more than 300 to someone else who might think that the ticket is worth exactly or more than the money he paid me. That's what Ebay is for. Ebay sets up a free market economy where firefly tickets can go to the most needy person.

Remember, no one is making this person buy the tickets.

Shiny,

Your Hurricane example is a bad one. Don't believe in the media hype.

I can't recall off the top of my head, but I think what occured to Charleston when Hurricane Hugo(?) hit it. The City council passed a law that said the store owners could only sell chainsaws for the same price they always did.

What happened? Well for one, only the people who were fortunate enough to be in the store at the right time or personally knew the store owner got a chainsaw, since they were all sold out.

This left people who were in severe need of a chainsaw, those who weren't there at the right time and didn't know anyone with connections, deprived of what they needed the most.

And you know what's funny? Right outside the city limits, hundreds of vendors set up shop right outside the city, selling their chainsaws at infalted prices. And people still bought those chainsaws, because those people wieghed the costs and benefits of buying a pricy chainsaw and figured out that the benefits still outweighed the costs.

Where did these vendor's and chainsaws come from? From around the country. Do you think that these extra chainsaws would have been magically re-routed from stores in surrounding states if the price weren't worth it for the vendors? Without those chainsaw scalpers, those most needy of chainsaws in charleston would have been screwed since there were no chainsaws.

Of course this being a firefly board, let me give you an example from firefly. Ariel, stealing from the rich and selling to the poor. There is obviously a strong demand for medicine on the outer rims but the beaureaucracy of the alliance prevents this medication from going out to the people in need. Mal and crew are only doing "honest smuggling" bringing goods to those who need them the most. Do you think they would do the same if the demand, the need for those supplies didn't exist? Mal and Co are simply being good capitalists.

My friend and I had a discussion about this today. We got four tickets for the 6/23 screening. One for me and my date, one for him, and one that he is holding for a date. He commented that if he couldn't find a date, he was sure he could find someone else who would want it. Then he paused and said, "And I could probably make a tidy profit off of it."
"No." I said. "Not with this. Don't do that with Serenity."
He thought for a moment, and agreed.

That may be true in some, or even most cases, but when you also see auctions with a BuyItNow price of $120 for 2 tkts, how can you say that's not being jacked??

Again, if the ticket gets bought then someone doesn't share the same opinion that they are being jacked. No one is forcing them to buy it at that particular price.

Scalpers do suck, here there are laws against it. Well, at least around sports events, don't think I ever heard of scalping movie tickets til these screenings. Yeah but how about the people who did refresh fandango every 30 seconds for a week and didn't get a ticket because scalpers bought them all up? Some people did put in a lot of effort to get a ticket but still missed out.

And the whole point is that people wouldn't have to pay for the scalpers to 'do the work' to get the tickets for them if the scalpers didn't buy up all the gorram tickets in the first place.

The same thing happens over here with festivals.

A festival puts up tickets for fair price.

A few hours later all the tickets have gone - to Scalpers.

Every single festival fan who has just got in from work (which they need to do to be able to pay for a ticket)can't get tickets.

They now have to pay 100quid extra cause a scalper made a two minute phone call to deprive them of the tickets.

The festivals intention was to sell the tickets at a fair price to the average fan but the scalpers have abused the reason they were sold the tickets.

You can not tell me charging someone 100 quid extra is a fair charge for the 2 minutes or so of work it took them? And that deliberately buying up all the tickets to deprive fans is a nice thing to do?

It's maybe not a go and shoot somebody's granny hell on earth but it is in the economic world. It's just a dishonorouable way to make your money. Buying up large amounts of something sold at a fair price to deprive the market and put up your prices.

Heather

Ps. your comment about people having less money because they choose to is clearly wrong. Some people just couldn't afford that whatever reasonable sacrifices they made and not because they choose to have less money.

Yeah I don't care about the person who's paying the hundred quid so much as the person who couldn't get tickets at a normal price cause the Scalpers bought them all and who couldn't afford to pay a scalper but would have been able to get tickets otherwise.

The whole point is Joss could have made 300 dollars each off each ticket but he didn't want to cause that wasn't fair to the average serenity mad fan who couldn't afford that.

Buying up all the tickets and putting them on the net for 5 times what you paid for them isn't jacking up the prices?

True fans who would have been able to get tickets are still missing out. They would have been able to get tickets and are crazy about Serenity but the scalpers bought them all and can't afford to pay for them. You may think that's their tough luck that they don't have enough money and you may believe in a free market economy but the tickets went on sale in a welfare way to make sure average fans could afford a ticket and a few crappy people are deliberately depriving those fans.

Yeah the guy who can afford to pay 200 quid but who didn't put in any effort gets the ticket but the average fan who the tickets were intended for and who put in just as much effort as the scalper to get a ticket missed out.

I don't have a problem with people selling their extra tickets on ebay for whatever price they get. The resource (tickets) are limited and, if you have one extra ticket and 10 people want it, selling it at auction is one way to pick who gets it. Sure, I would really rather see the recipient chosen through random drawing or charity donation, or creative 'uber-fan' contest or something. Those latter choices are certainly more in keeping with the FF fandom's spirit.

What I do have a problem with is when scalpers intentionally hoard a large number of tickets with the sole purpose of making a ridiculous profit off of someone else's creativity and hard work.

'Versal is still making money on every ticket sold, regardless of who bought it. And Serenity is still selling out every seat at every screening. And the people who are buying tickets at really inflated prices are doing so of their own free will. This is all true. But scalpers are just not-nice people in my opinion. And they are breaking the law.

What I don't understand is why 'Versal hasn't dealt with the problem. For sporting events and concerts, it's customary for ticket sales to be capped at 4 (or 8, or 12) tickets per transaction. If the theatres instituted this practice, scalpers would still get tickets to sell on ebay, but I think more Browncoats would get the chance to purchase tickets directly. Buying tickets online is not simply a matter of 'making it a priority', as has been suggested. It has something to do vigilance and much to do with luck (and the speed of your internet connection).

Maybe the movietickets.com and fandango sites aren't equipped to handle ticket purchase restrictions. In fact, those sites are pretty crappy, IMO, so they probably don't have that capability. Also, if 'Versal is primarily interested in how fast they can tell people the screening sold out, they might not be motivated to discourage scalpers from purchasing large blocks of tickets. But, so far, 'Versal hasn't seemed quite that mercenary in their approach to marketing Serenity.

We are rabid fans. We really want to see Serenity on the big screen ASAP We are passionate and sometimes over-emotional about perceived wrongs in our 'verse. It's important to try to keep some perspective about the ticket sales process. That being said, scalping is wrong and deprives true fans of the opportunity to get tickets via the conventional route.

We've done the impossible and that makes us mighty. Mal/Joss

To those fans who buy a lot of extra tickets and want to sell them for charity. That's a nice sentiment but I already give money to charity. I'd rather have the tickets left alone so that people can buy them from the theater online. Given the desperation and frustration of people who keep on trying to buy tickets but can't, I would only buy tickets that they plan on using themselves or for friends and family that I know want to go but who can't get to a computer or a phone in time to buy their tickets themselves.

I also agree with Whedonesque's suggestion that ticket purchases be limited to a certain number of tickets per purchase or per person. One of the charities to which I belong limits the number of tickets one person can buy to four. That way, they put a curb on scalpers and people who buy a lot of tickets because they think that their friends will want to go and when it turns out not to be so, the person is left with a bunch of tickets that they have to unload and could go to waste if they're not willing to stand outside of the theater on sneak peek night to sell them.

Gotta say one thing here that people seem to be forgetting, people don't need to see Serenity, they want to. You look at the example above with the hurricane, people needed those chainsaws. No-one needs an advanced ticket to Serenity, it's coming out in 3 1/2 months anyway so what does it matter how much people are willing to pay for them now?

All these people are doing is operating a shop, buying tickets and selling them to make a profit. If this time next year Virgin realises people are willing to pay £100 for the DVD, the price'll get hitched up. Does that mean we should all start writing abusive e-mails to Virgin? All the complaints about it 'not being the browncoat way', seem pointless as the scalpers obviously ain't browncoats! They're out to make a buck and I really don't see what the problem is with that.

From the sound of it the tickets were on sale for at least 15 minutes in most cities. If the people were refreshing every 30 seconds they should have gotten their tickets.

There aren't enought tickets for everyone to get one. Just because scalpers got some doesn't mean every fan who missed out would have gotten the tickets. In the end the tickets will be in the hands of fans either way.

However much 100 quid is I still say it's fair. The person paying that amount is paying for convenience. If I was rich and wanted to go to a show, I'd happily buy from scalpers. I could just walk up whenever I want to an event and get in. That's much more convenient than having to monitor when tickets go on sale and do a bunch of work to get them in time. It's a choice. If I choose to pay the extra money then that's my decision. I never said it was nice though. It is abusing the system. There will always be ways to abuse the system though. I'm not going to complain at every little unfair situation. Life isn't fair.

Yes, I still say it is a choice as to wether or not you have money. People have gone from rags to riches. It's all a matter of how dedicated they are and what they will give up for that money. Maybe someone will give up going out on Friday night all through high school so they could get good grades. That's a choice people make. Every choice in life has costs to it. I don't believe that someone just could not afford a $200 ticket if it was really their top priority in life. It's sad if that is a top priority but that's another story. If someone really wanted to go bad enough they could.

LOSTSOUL

Hi all, just joined here, been skulking 'round awhile. I am happy to say that I have tickets to this screening. I tried all morning to get them and somehow still missed when they went on sale. Just pure bad luck I guess. I admit it, i bought em on ebay at an inflated rate. I live in Des Moines, IA. We will never get a preview here. Not big enough, not enough fans I suppose. That means that I have to travel to see it in addition to payin the price. I had to think real gorram hard about if it was worth it. You know what? Hell yes it is. For what it's worth, the price I payed makes this screening even more special as does the trip. This is a rare occasion, you could say once in lifetime and every bit of struggle and dollor spent just makes it worth that much more to me. And I know that there are quite a few of us on that boat. On June 23rd we will be in a theater watching the BDM surrounded by folks that appreciate it as much we do knowing we did what it took to keep flying. And THAT makes us mighty.

NAKEDANDARTICULATE

Okay,I admit I made a mistake(and not just with the grammar)I had what I like to call an"Anakin" moment,I let my anger take over me(hence the ape-like speak)when I shouldn't have let it bother me.Yes I had a "holier than thou" moment, but I just had enough.I went to the 1st screening in Boston. Why? Because a fellow browncoat(diet coke) noticed my post ,that I wanted a ticket and she mentioned it to a Boston browncoat. How much did he charge DC and I? 10.00,plus he allowed for us to stay at one of his friends house,we went out and walked downtown Boston,we had dinner with a few other BC's.After the movie we all ate at a chinese restaurant. These were strangers when I met them, but now I consider them friends"or as I like to call them Browncoats" Do you want to know what a true Browncoat is? The scene in "out of gas" where they are eating dinner.laughing and having fun.Do our BDH's steal-yes.Do we live 500 years in the future, where you HAVE to do things that may be immoral, just so that you can SURVIVE. But I digress, the point of my "Annie" moment is I have made a lot of great people on this site and in person,so it just angered me when I saw all these listing literally witin the hour after the tickets were sold out.Ultimately my reaction was unwise, and yes I wish people wouldn't buy these tickets so that this would stop---but you know what? I'm not them,I don't have the right to tell them what to do(atleast not yet,you see i'm working on a mind controll device that wil--you know what I'll keep that quiet for now--bwahahaha,"mine is an evil laugh")So while I am not apologizing for what I believe is wrong and I will continue to feel this way,I am however apologizing for my actions.Keep flyin'.

"Hamsters is nice."

I'm sure other people have linked this, but if we want to get the scalpers, can't we nail 'em with Ebay policy? Here's the scoop:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/event-tickets.html

Seems they regulate this. For a 'regulated' state where either the seller or the buyer are the same state as the event, they won't allow bids past a very slim increase in cost (25% or so). Take Philly for instance (where I'm going):

Regulation: No more than face value plus the greater of 25% of the ticket price or $5

So, that's $2.50 more than around $10, or $12.50. Don't think a scalper's going to like that. If I'm in New Jersey (I am) and buy tickets (I won't!) from a scalper located NOT in PA, I guess we're out of luck - I could pay whatever. But if I'm IN PA, or THEY are, then it's a no-go.

Who enforces this on Ebay? They auto-check, I assume, but locations are flaky on the 'Net. Can we nail the scalpers at the site, by documenting and reporting to EBay? Or at LEAST let Ebay know that this is kinda rampant? I'd think a complaint from Universal would work...

Or just keep sending e-mails with the same ungrammatical line over and over and over and over.

Frankly, those Philistines don't deserve good grammar.

But while we're at it it's "eBay" versus "e-mail" The first one being a proprietary company name and logo (like 3M). But that's okay - misspelling is already an insult. Like not capitalizing "fox" ...

Yes, I'm sure if 'versal decided they wanted to stop this, eBay would listen. Although it wouldn't hurt for hundreds or thousands of browncoats ebayers to register complaints through eBay's abuse reporting system, either...

Jayne, your mouth is talkin. Might want to look into that.

Am pretty sure the screenings don't count as the film will be out in September for general release, and as such it is not an event (in the same way that a baseball game or a concert is)
