Airing tonight on the cable net TNT at 8 p.m. (EST) is the new miniseries "Into the West." Alan plays Nathan Wheeler, brother of the main character Jacob Wheeler (Matthew Settle).

According to the Into the West site, he's on in tonight's first episode, "Wheel to the Stars," wherein Nathan and Jacob leave Virginia and hope to join up with mountain man Jedediah Smith on his expedition to California.

And if you miss it tonight, TNT will be airing repeats every Saturday and Sunday night throughout the run of the series.

However, if you're expecting lots of Alan goodness - I just read an interview with Alan where he said they cut down his role so much they gave him the option of not taking it. So, he's probably not in it much.

Ah well, a little Alan is still good :)

Thanks for the reminder. I forgot that started tonight. I'll have to set my VCR to record.

A little bit of Alan is worth more than a lot of a few other actors I can think of. Hayden Christensen, for instance.

Makes me wish I still had cable. This will probably come out on dvd though, so let me know if it's good, then I'll just buy it.

In addition to Alan, I believe that Christian Kane (Lindsey on "Angel") is also going to be in this show. I don't know anything about his part or how much he's going to be in it, but he's someone else to be looking for.

I just found a huge ad for the movie in the TVGuide that listed like 10-20 actors in the movie. Christian Kane was shown (with weird, braided hair) but not Alan Tudyk! I seriously think his part's going to be tiny. In the interview Gonzai mentioned, I think he said he's just there for a bit then he disappears for the entire movie.

* And about Hayden Christensen, he's a good actor. Just watch his other, non Star Wars works. I mean, Lucas even made Natalie Portman and Liam Neeson turn in horrible performances.

Christian's playing a half breed, the son of the main character, so I'd guess he has a bigger part than Alan! Throw in Sean Astin and Matthew Modine, and I'm set.

Alan's part just finished. He's in the first 30 minutes of the first episode. I don't think he makes another appearance.

Yeah I agree. After Alan left, I quickly lost interest in it. It just boring all the sudden Then I changed it to and watched CSI and it was all good for the rest of the night.

While Alan isn't in the rest of the movie (apparently), it's still a pretty good movie for a made-for-tv movie. If you don't have cable and want to see it, I suggest you rent it when it's released on DVD.

I can see that it can be boring to those that have no interest in the settling of the west or in Native American culture. But if you aren't just watching for a specific actor, it is an interesting movie. The acting is pretty good. I think the script writers could have used a little help in the scenes where the Native Americans were the focus. It seemed a little choppy but still interesting.

I'm looking forward to next week's episode.

Predictable?

Generally, in Classic cowboy and indian westerns, it's a lot more about the cowboys killing the Greek/Italian/Mexican actors dressed up in leathers and wigs to look like heathen blood-thirsty Indians rather than exploring various Indian cultures.

This production has gone to the lengths of hiring Indian actors and giving them the language they need to complete their roles. I would bet they have the same tutors that Kevin Costner highered for "Dances With Wolves." Some of the Indian actors do have English names, which means they're descendants of those who were forced through the "Americanization" process.

The White cultures and characters might be reminiscent of the classic western, but they've decided to take the "Dances With Wolves" dynamic, which we're all pretty familiar with by now.

The story itself is pretty darn predictable, but the western setting has been expanded beyond the classic sensitivities.

The rest of what I have to say is in spoiler format, in case some taped it and haven't seen it yet. Click and drag your mouse over it to read it... or not.

How did one character performing a sun dance while two men crawling through an ever-shrinking cave and comparing it to the story of Jonah and the Whale become predictable?

The spiritual/Christian aspect is unusual. Jacob makes a derrogatory comment about someone being Catholic, which separates him as a Protestant. Showing Jedediah as a Bible-learned mountain man is also unusual. If those fellas did know how to read, the Bible would be the most accessible, yet hardly any classic western showed it. Instead, praying and Bible verse recitation was usually left to a parson who did it on command, rather like a parrot.

I'm not sure the Indian spiritual beliefs have ever been explored to this extent before, except perhaps in "The Man Called Horse." I feel like we're taking the walk with "Loved by the Buffalo, and seeing an Indian seminary process from the inside. Maybe the empathic aspect is a little over the top, but that too adds a facet that the Classic westerns would never have gotten anywhere NEAR.

Alan was pretty predominant in the first 30 minutes. I don't know about you, but I couldn't keep my eyes shut that long. It's a shame his part's been reduced. I find it hard to believe they would have bothered putting him in the opening credits if he wasn't going to come back. Then again, we may just find out he died at the Alamo, but I'll have to double check the dates.

I'll take it under advisement, no promises. Lucas should never write romantic dialogue again. Ever.
