In my opinion, the best movie of the 80's. Crazy funny, cool, and pretty much timeless. Daniel Water's writing is so amazing, it's strange he just kind of fell off the face of the earth after this film was made. Is it a rule that the people who write, and make the best movies in the 80's have to go into hiding soon after?? John Hughes also comes to mind.

I picked up The limited edition of Heathers a few years ago from Best Buy for $14.99. limited to 15,000, It came in a collective tin, along with a yearbook, and a Heathers rules ruler. Anchor Bay had a great thing going for a while with the collective dvd's. They also released limited editions of Evil Dead 2, Repo Man, and The Wicker Man, basically cult classics.

I watched it recently, for the first time in about 4 years, and was amazed that it was as fresh now, as it was when I watched it for the first time in 89. Some movies never get old.
Not only is Heathers funny it is also very dark, and very sad. Everytime I watch it, I get a whole different take on it. Weird.

If anyone else is a fan of this movie, or not, it would be great to hear from ya.

"Your such a pillowcase"-Heather Chandler

"If you were happy everyday of your life, you wouldn't be a human being, you'd be a game show host"
"Our love is god, let's go get a slushie"-Jason Dean

I'm not too big of a fan of the 80's in general, but I think that HEATHERS is one of not only the handful of really good movies to come out of the 80's but one of the best black comedies ever filmed. This and TRUE ROMANCE are two of Xtian Slater's best work. Everyone involved is at the top of their game. It's a shame that Daniel Water's kinda dissappeared off the face of the Earth a few years later. And Michael Lehmann has been kinda reduced to doing tv work or as a gun for hire.

But there is good news. He is reteaming with Winona Ryder, and the movie they're doing MARY WARNER, about and I quote "A slacker actress who trips her way through a series of life-changing misadventures after eating a batch of marijuana-laced brownies made by her stoner roommate." If this is any indication, this is going to put them back on top.

The one movie that came out last year that infuriated me with it's success was MEAN GIRLS. It's essentially a watered down, studiofied version of HEATHERS, and to think that not only was it a hit, but it was actually taken seriously as a good movie is appalling. And irony of ironies, the flick was directed by Mark Waters, brother of Daniel. How's that for an obvious sign that it's a rip-off. And to think that that flick soared while THE GIRL NEXT DOOR, an infinitly better flick, crashed on impact.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

I didn't know about Mary Warner, it sounds very cool, and un-Hollywood which is always a good thing. Thanks for the info.

Also I totally agree with you about Mean Girls. A Shameless, Heathers wannabe.

Does anyone know about the curse of Heathers?

Here are the facts

1 Kim Walker who played Heather Chandler(the lead Heather) died of a brain tumor in 2000. Very ironic that early in the film she asks another Heather if she had a brain tumor for breakfast.

2. Jeremy Appelgate played Peter Dawson, committed suicide in 2000. In the film, at Heather Chandler's funeral he prays that he doesn't want suicide to happen to him, because he couldn't handle it.

3. Winona Ryder has been in trouble with the law.

4. Christian Slater has been in trouble with the law.

Just random nonsence I know, but the first one is kind of creepy.

Holy crap! Is that true? How strange and tragic. I hear stories about former celebs having died that turn out to be bogus, but man... sad to hear these.

Per Winona and Christian, I don't see how those really count. Take a peek @ E.T. on just about any night of the week, and you'll find that there's some star ( current or former ) getting in trouble for something. And that's just the stuff we KNOW about......

I too have Heather's on DVD... one of the best (and darkest!) comedies out of the 80's. It had wickedly intelligent dialogue, razor sharp wit, and actually invented a slang that sounded cool and made perfect sense. Sound like any other writer/director we may know?

I can't imagine that Heathers could be filmed today, given the oversensitization that's overtaken our society and Hollywood since it was made. One of the very few movie quotes that I incorporated into my own vocabulary came from Heathers... I use it every time it fits some event in my life:

"Color me impressed!"

Thanks for starting the thread. Now that I think about it, it's time to break Heathers out if its box for a viewing this week.

Fantastic, break it out and watch it. That's the spirit. I wonder if Joss is a fan? Oh, and about Heathers not being made today, you are 150 percent correct. Heathers is truly a one of a kind movie, and it is also one of the best films ever.

My usual random remarks.

Loved Heathers, W. Ryder with a go board in her room? Nuff. said.

If you like Slater as a kid, check out "Pump Up the Volume" not as good as Heathers, but it has some moments.

Even though Heathers is superior and Mean Girls is somewhat derivitive - I did not think it was that bad. Some of the anthropological analogy scenes were pretty good and it had its moments.

So did "The Girl Next Door" but I felt that film tried to be too many things at once.

See how I'm not punching him, I think I've grown!

Yeah, They are true unfortunatly. Being the biggest Heathers fan, I was really shocked and disturbed when I learned of this a few years ago. I'm also kind of upset that on the Heathers dvd commentary, and 30 minute retrospect, nothing was mentioned of the passing of both fine actors.
About the Winona ryder/ Christian Slater thing your right, it's no curse, just good actors making bad choices.

Loved Heathers. Also highly recommend Pump Up the Volume. Good stuff. I used to get ragged on for being a Slater fan, but there were so many good films that he was a part of. Even Joss made a closing comment that refrenced his first semi-successful film, "Gleaming the Cube" when he closed a letter to the Browncoats, "gleam the damn cube already." or something like that.

Gleaming the cube-one of the most obscure films of the 80's. A kid(Slater) trying to solve his brothers murder by skateboard. ??

I am almost certain that Joss Whedon has a wire tap on everything cool. And not just normal cool, I'm talkin under the radar, wait a few years and see what I'm talking about cool!!! FREQUENCY-VERY RARE

ahhh..Heathers.

Memories of high school sleepovers where we'd stay up all night watching Heathers and all the old movies with John Cusak and Molly Ringwald. I LOVE all those 80's teen movies.

It's just so strange to have this image of folks like these from days gone by, and learn they've died YEARS ago already. Hard to put into words, but I think ya get my meaning.

And what a whack-a-do thing w/ the whole 'brain tumor / suicide ' thing. Anyone could have had those lines, and yet....

I forgot to add that, as a teen for the early part of the 80's, I am genetically linked to such things. What can I say? Heathers was a nice evolutionary step from the whole 'Valley Girl, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles' part of my life to a darker, and in some ways more honest look at H.S hell. ( Honest to a point, but certainly not the whole killing/mass murder theme. )

I dunno. My thoughts on the 80's are this.

Maybe it's because of the fact that I was way too young to remember any of it (my b-day is Sept. 2nd, 1985), but I don't think the 80's were anything to write home about. Gaudy trends, horrible music, tv shows and movies that definitly have not aged well, as well as the whole "Greed is good", excess corporate mentality that made up the whole decade. I mean, when you elect a freaking actor, and a bad one for that matter, to be your president, you know your screwed.

Regan, Thatcher, Mulroney, Jackson. These are names that will not be remembered fondly for generations to come. I just think that with the exception of a handful of things produced in that decade, the whole ten years was just a hangover from the 60's and 70's.

The 80's were a bust. Now the 90's, that's when things started cooking.

As for Hughs, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF is the only one of his flicks that I ever really liked.

It really changes the I view the film. In certain scenes I will see one of the two actors and just get taken out of it for a few seconds, not believing they are really gone. After I first learned of all this, I watched the movie again. I had all these thoughts on the meaning of life, and why certain people live long lives, and others die young. It was pretty scary, If for the only reason being that there are no answers.

Heavy. Anyway If Christian Slater dies from a bomb blast, I am seriously never going to watch this movie again.

Not wishing to hijack the thread, really... The mere fact that you weren't born 'till half the 80's were even done with kinda is relevent. You were 5 when the 80's were coming to a close, so your view of it is somewhat....revisionist ? I lived it.

You and I see things from oposing ends of the spectrum. Reagan, Thatcher... truly the greats in MY life time. No question there. The 80's were a hoot, where many folks didn't take themselves so seriously. Huey Lewis ? The Go-gos? C'mon.....AWESOME! After the dismal 70's,- long gas lines, bad disco music, pet rocks, - the 80's were a great time of renewel and fun seeking ( some say to excess ) for an entire generation...a whole country.
