"Dont Miss" column, page 1.
FRIDAY. Firefly (Fox, 8P.M./ET) Fans of this struggling sci-fi Western have waited months to see creator Joss Whedon's two-hour pilot, which Fox benched for a more compact opening episode. Now see how it all really began.

"Drama Guide" column, page 65.
Firefly (Fox, 8P.M./ET) Executive producer and creator Joss Whedon initially intended this two-hour pilot episode to be our introduction to the passengers and crew of the Firefly-class starship Serenity. But the network wanted a punchier opening episode, so if you've beeen looking for more background on how all of these disparate fugitives came together, this should help. But the show still is hardly an easy sell, as it blends together elements of classic Westerns and futuristic science fiction.

My opinion: It isn't much, but at least it's SOMETHING.

So we have Objects in Space on the 13th and Serenity on the 20th and then the hiatus?

Correct, with two more guaranteed episodes in production beyond that. One of them, "Heart of Gold" I believe, is already completed.

Cool... I was afraid that Objects in Space and War Stories were those two episodes that Fox had added.

Is no post-hiatus news good news? When should we start expecting to hear what Fox has decided to do?

A real beauty, ain't she? Yes, sir. A right smart purchase, this vessel. Tell you what, you buy this ship, treat her proper, she'll be with ya for the rest of your life.

I have some possible post hiatus news. Firefly will probably be moving to a new timeslot. So says my source. Sorry, uncorroborateable but that's life. I can just hope that my source is right.

I read on the FOX board that Heart of Gold is made, but it may make the overall plot more complicated. He wrote Objects in Space to
put in its place because it may answer some
questions for the viewers, instead of just
making new ones. So if Heart of Gold airs
in January, it would just leave us hanging
and maybe more confused.

I’ve had the honour to watch every FireFly show since Train Job. (It took me a couple weeks to figure out that Train Job wasn’t supposed to be the season premier) I was hooked when Mal kicked Niska’s tough guy into the engine intake. How very refreshingly un-gene Roddenburyesque I thought.

This is my first post. I have to say it, I too am curious what Book’s story is. I have him figured as more Military Intelligence / Internal Security type. What we know about him: he’s had combat or at least firearms training, well read and most importantly he has ID that identifies him as a high-ranking government official. In the words of Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, he’s deep-deep-deep undercover. He covers as a Priest, with a fake background as a mystery man, but really is working for the Alliance sent to keep an eye on River.

Book, I would like to believe belongs to an agency that does not want River falling into the wrong hands. (e.g. Blue Hands) What better way to do this than let River travel randomly around the outer rim planets with a crew of people that are able to take care of themselves and each other.

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys. --P.J. O'Rourke
