I'm loving how they're tirelessly promoting the movie there as well. Now bring on the endless promos, SCI FI!

Interesting.....

The Sci Fi site lists the following under the background on Mal:

During the war of independence, Mal enlisted on the independent side, fighting against the Alliance as a sergeant in the 57th Overlanders.

57th Overlanders??? Mal was in the Balls & Bayonets Brigade. Is the 57th part of that brigade? Anyone else seen this info before?

It's very shiny, and I'm glad they have it up... but...

I think the episode guides they have up are very spoilerish. I wouldn't send someone who hasn't seen the series to this site, and shouldn't it be a site for just that? I guess that's just my opinion.

Good to see the movie plug on there, though. Way to go NBC/Universal!

Balls and Bayonets brigade is a joke, it's the equivalent of saying he was in the testicles and knives brigade. It's possible the 57th Overlanders were known as the Balls and Bayonets brigade informally, but I'm assuming it's just Badger trying to make Mal feel small.

It was a joke? Funny, it never struck me as one. I always thought it an odd name, but I figured it was because they were severe bad@$$3s.

Perhaps "Balls & Bayonets" is what the 57th called themselves.

I thought Badger said "7th" Infantry in "Serenity". Perhaps I misunderstood him. I'll have to rewatch it tonight & pay closer attention.

Heck, even the character guides are spoilerish. Still, if they get people to watch, that's fine with me. It's a shiny site!

Y'know, my wife and I have often commented on how Zoe and Wash don't seem to have a last name (or last names). Has Wash's full name ever appeared somewhere else? Also, do we know why Zoe still doesn't seem to have a last name? It strikes me as a little degrading that she doesn't; even my cat Zoe (Morphea Ravenna Hazlerig) has more names.

(I also love shouting "Kaywinnit Lee Hazlerig!" at my cat Kaylee when she misbehaves . . . Yep, I'm a geek.)

I'd love to say something here - in regard to something I spotted in the pre-screening of the movie to this effect - but since there's a strong possibility of getting yelled at, ask me offline if you want to know and I'll tell you. Same goes for the "Derrial Book" business, but I won't reveal that on pain of denying myself chocolate for the rest of my life.

True, they do reveal quite a bit, but there's a lot that they don't reveal either - like what kind of shape Jayne was in when he was protesting the return of the goods.

I would suggest getting converts to see the pilot first, then send them off on their own if they like. Case in point: Carnivale. I have the first season on DVD, just found out it's been cancelled after the second season, but haven't seen it yet because I won't pay for HBO (I prefer to buy books). The episode guide for Carnivale was helpful for me to get an idea of where the series was going without having to spare the expense of renting.

However, it's not and will never be the same as seeing the episodes themselves.

On the upside, if the Episode guide is anything to go by, they're showing the episodes in the "correct" sequence.

Square? Checking… nope, don't see the square. Mine has "Constantine" not BG. I'd MUCH rather have BG.

One time I was talking to a husband and wife about the new BG and the husband mentioned how he liked how dark it was. On a notion, I asked if he had ever seen a show called Firefly. Their simultaneous response:

Him: "That's the best show EVER!!!"
Her: "It never got the chance it deserved!!!"

Mal's Bio is very aptly written: He remains a born leader, and is fanatically dedicated to his crew. He is not, however, a born strategist, and his plans often tend to go a bit wonky. Still, he inspires fierce loyalty in his people.

That's our Mal, in a nutshell.

Gotta say, I'm surprised by how excited I am to see this site. Just seeing all that sweetness - not archived, not vestigial, not sentimental, but current. Relevant. Today. Now. Shiver.

As to the spoilerific stuff - even that kind of excites me, because it reminds me that people will be catching "Firefly" by accident, on random episodes, and could appreciate that kind of information to catch 'em up. And honestly, how many times have you watched each episode? Knowing what comes next or not, it is still a great ride.

My only nit pick: As Inara tells the Alliance commander in Bushwhacked, "It's just Serenity."

IMDB's site on "Serenity" lists Zoe's last name as Warren (and everyone else's last name, i.e. Inara Serra).

NOTE: Other recent threads have noted a major spoiler in the Trivia section of IMDB's Serenity site, but it is no longer there. Although I wouldn't go into the quotes area if you want to avoid all spoiler possibilities...

If this is in reply to Zoe's last name being Warren, let's keep in mind that it's not necessarily mandatory for a wife to take her husband's last name now, let alone 500 years from now.

Nobody ever mentions Zoe's last name... not even Zoe. Mal never used it (Warren or anything else) when introducing her. In fact, he seldom used last names at all.

Makes me wonder if there isn't some reason for that. Whether Zoe chose to go without a last name, or if using it will somehow get her into trouble with the feds? We really don't know that much about her background. Yes, she was raised in space, on a ship, but aside from that it's like she simply appeared during the war. How is it no one ever speculates about that?

It's strange to me that some folks consider the characters' full name to be spoilers. Really, they're not! (Am I spoiling just by saying that?)

Some of the previously unknown character names do come up in "Serenity," but it's so fleeting that the people I saw it with couldn't agree what some of them were. "Derrial" sounds good, but we all thought it was something different!

The fact that many of us are/were hoping to see more background on Book (arguably one of the most puzzling characters on the series) in the movie and then be told that "Well his name sounded somehting like 'Derrial' but it was so fleeting" (hence a small part of hte movie) is indeed a spoiler in my book. I am the admin for the Soulful Spike Society website and message board ( www.soulfulspike.com) which is spoiler free in it's main areas and that comment would indeed be considered "spoiler-ish." It would be deleted or edited out, with a friendly letter sent to the poster as to "why" with directions for it to be posted in the Spoilers area. Of course that's the way we do things there. On this board I am a regular schmo and am merely replying as how I see and feel about it.

By our military parlance 57th Overlanders would be the division with in which you would have several brigades. For example the 101 Airborne is made up of 5 combat brigades which are each made up of several companies which are made up of 2-3 platoons which are made up of usually 2 squads which are made up of about 6 soldiers.

"Balls and Bayonets" is probably either a unit motto or a unit nickname. 82nd Airborne are known as the "All Americans," and the 101st Air Assault are called the "Screaming Eagles." There're Buffalo Soldiers (though can't remember what unit that is. Most likely "Balls and Bayonets is of that sort.

Channain, PM me too! I'm curious, please?

Also - yes, can't remember where I got this piece of info, but Zoe's maiden name was Alleyne, and she actually did take Wash's last name. She just didn't swear to obey. Love and honor, yes, but never obey.

As for Badger and the Balls and Bayonets thing, my take is that he was mocking Mal. "Oh, look at you, the honorable man, the tough veteran, the member of the Balls and Bayonets brigade - yeah, whatever, you're nothing. A scavenger."

Actually, the only person in the Series to ever use the phrase "Balls and Bayonets Brigade" was Badger. He did so while being sarcastic about Mal's Military Service. I realize that the phrase has become part of the Series mythology, but I for one believe that the name has nothing to do with the Overlanders. Why would a Unit that has female soldiers such as Zoe go by such a sexist nickname? It doesn't really make sense. It's much more likely that Badger was being a SmartAss. Using that phrase fits his character more than anyone else's.

Oh my god; I wish this site had a eye-rolling emoticon--because there's nothing sexist about the term "balls." "Balls" may mean testes, as in male reproductive organs. But another sense of the word "balls" is "gutsy" or in particular "bravery"--even "daring" maybe. Plus we're talking about soldiers here--soldiers are not known for their tact, political correctness, or delicacy. Add to the fact that the way Badger says "Balls and Bayonets Brigade" is attributive--he means to infer that that was something Malcolm was a part of, something that once meant a great deal to him. He's mocking him because Sergeant Reynolds formerly of the hard-core Balls and Bayonets Brigade is now just a scavenger, just a small player in Badger's game. That would hurt far more than someone making up, on the spot, a new nickname for your old unit. Because hey--"Balls and Bayonets Brigade" is a pretty cool nickname.

Also, "smart ass" is two words, and it isn't capitalized.

Also, where was "57th Overlanders" ever used in the series? The only unit name we get in the series is "Balls and Bayonets Brigade."
