Ok, I've seen two different names for Shepard Book on IMDB and SciFi's new Firefly site. Now, since no one in the show ever says this real name, we have to rely on script info and hear-say. So, now I'm confused... IMDB has the a character list, under which Ron Glass' character is "Shepard Meria Book". And SciFi's new firefly site has Mr Glass as "Shepard Derrial Book". So which is it? I thought it was Meria... is SciFi's site wrong? Or maybe it's both?? I'm curious.

I read it as Derrial but it seems to be conflicted. We'll have to wait to see the movie again and watch that particular scene closer so that we can all put this mystery to rest.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

Depends on who you ask. Like I said, I could've sworn it was Derrial. This is also being argued in the spoiler forum on the Universal Board. Since we can't agree on the name I think we're all going to have to wait until Sept. 30th and watch that particular scene closely and figure it out.

IMDB and Hell's Kitten are correct "Shepard Meria Book".
Not sure where Sci-Fi got their info, but it looks like they got mixed up somewhere. The movie definitely has "Shepard Meria Book".

I'm going to second that, just for clarification that it is Meria Book. A huge discussion came from that name with my friends and I after we saw Serenity the first time. It's African for Rebellious One.

Definitely.. definitely Meria.

I gotta go with Derrial. Since IMDB has had Meria listed prior to the screenings, maybe people are seeing that because it's already been subconsciously implanted. It just fogs it up.

Oh, how I find these debates amusing.

Guys I'm pretty sure it's Derrial. I mean Krad confirmed it. That's a pretty darn good source.

Plus that's what I took away from the movie. Since I'm always right, I'm going to have to stick with Derrial.

Hmmm... which African? (Continent with hundreds of languages, etc.)

Yes, I'm an anthropologist, sorry if my query sounds too smart-ass, but I'm curious.

Fogged, huh. Cute. That might track if I went to IMDB. At both screenings I went to,

Select to view spoiler:

the gravestones read "Meria" and "Hoban." (Don't care about the other guy.) A more plausible theory about the differences in memory may be that there are simply different cuts of the film being shown, since the gravestones are CGI.

I noticed quite a few new / different things between the first and second screenings.

EDIT: added spoiler things. Sorry, I was under the impression that this whole thread was a spoiler thing. Considering all the previous spoiler warngings.

Hell's Kitchen, you really need to edit your post to put a spoiler warning in there - I've seen the movie, but anyone who hasn't will be MAJORLY spoiled by your post!

It may well be that they've shown different versions, I just can't figure out why they would. Plus, I've seen reports of two people watching the same screening coming away with different impressions of what letters were used.

What is funny about this is that it isn't really a subjective subject at all. Maybe they're just screwing with us...Zoic's idea of a practical joke. Especially since, once the final version is out, there will be no proof if they showed a different name.

What I love about this whole thing is that, as with the fog (not to be cute, but relevant), this is a profoundly unimportant debate. There is an answer, and it will be apparent soon enough. (Yet, here I am.)

For the record, I had not gone to IMDB either, but I had picked up the Meria thing by osmosis, or something, before actually seeing the movie. That's why I said "subconsciously" - to imply that one would not be aware of it.

Stating what you saw - or what you think you saw - isn't much of a debate. Someone asked a question; people responded. Anyway, you're right, it's not important. As such, I guess I'm going to have to bow to Zeek cuz, as was pointed out, Zeek's always right.

Krad from the official board, who is writing the official novilization of Serenity, has confirmed that it is Derrial Book not Meria as what is in the movie and on the script. IMDB is wrong.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.
