This post from Nathan Fillion was just posted over at the Browncoat forum:

Quote:

It is times like these that I feel like Malcolm Reynolds. This is something that would surely get you kicked into an engine. I just went to a comic store to purchase the Serenity comic for my mom. The sweetheart that she is, gave her issues (with her favorite character on the front) to relatives who were having trouble tracking one down. Please bear in mind that Canada is a wonderous place where the service industry is polite and helpful, and that this experience is not the norm. The store I chose, which shall remain nameless (Warp 1 Comics), at an undisclosed location (just off Whyte Ave), has the singlemost sanctimonious, condescending, dishonest a$$hole I've had the misfortune of meeting. My brother and I called ahead to find out they had one issue left, but upon arriving, found out they are gouging people $20 bucks for the damned thing! "That's what they're worth." he sneered at me. I asked him to show me a listing of some sort to back it up. "Well, I just know what I paid Dark Horse for it." He wouldn't show me that, either. I am aware that Dark Horse wasn't expecting these books to sell as well as they are, and that they are going into a second printing, but I just picked up three of them two days ago at cover price at another store. My brother piped up with a, "What an interesting attitude you have." Let me tell you folks, this fella had an attitude, and a smirk that you wanted to knock off his face with a baseball bat dipped in dog poop. Of course, my brother couldn't help letting this guy know who he was trying to hose by holding the issue next to my face. "This guy look familliar? This isn't some JoJo off the street! He knows what he's talking about!" Check this out- the reply of this one-eyed crap-catcher, who shall remain nameless (Darryl) was, (and imagine a dullards voice- how we make people we don't like sound in a story) "Well, then you can call Joss Whedon and ask him."
Wouldn't a smart business man ask me to sign an issue and sell me one at a fair price? Wouldn't that fetch a prettier penny than ripping me off for one issue? Congratulations, dude! You are now on the Browncoat $hitlist.
Never have I tried to wield power in this way, but if being Malcolm Reynolds has taught me anything, it's to follow my over-developed sense of vengeance. BOYCOTT WARP ONE COMICS! If you are in the neighborhood, drop by to tell "Patchy" that Browncoats don't take $hit from anyone. Tell your friends not to shop there, and lock 'em in the airlock if they do. Copy this post and e-mail it to fellow Edmontonians. Bump it to keep it alive.
Thank you. Thank you for letting me rant. If you feel I'm overboard, please feel free to, as Joss would say, contemplate silently.

The Captain

I don't live in Edmonton, but if I did I'd be a bit ashamed about this comic shop.

Lesson: Don't mess with the Captain. An army of Browncoats as enemies won't be pleasant. If that guy isn't the owner/manager I'm sure he'll be unemployed soon. It won't take long for this to get to the owner.

Now, if this had happened to Sean Maher I could understand coz, (IMHO), the comic cover doesn't bear much resemblance to him. But in this instance - could the guy not tell who the hell was standing in front of him???!

And as for suggesting that Dark Horse would charge $20.00, well...

Well like I said, I only got mine at the weekend and there were still a few on the shelves (not all covers though, think Inara was missing). The Cinema Store is only a couple of mins walk down the road (Monmouth St) so you've got a few choices.

I was going to send Cappy a message asking if he wanted my copy for his mom so I'm really glad he was able to get one.
I bought all three covers and gave the Inara one to my 2 neighbor girls. I'm putting together a set of three to be our room prize at next year's Marscon.
Cappy's cover is the one I'm keeping for me.
My local store (Shinders in downtown St. Paul, MN) is being really cool. They've got my name on the list wanting all nine covers. They're charging only list price and are carding/bagging them for free.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

This is just sad. Sad and infuriating as all get out.

I can understand why Nathan is mad. I love the bit about the baseball bat covered in dog poo! I know a few people who could use just such an attitude adjustment. Funny how two of them are the owners of comic stores right here in Richmond, VA. "singlemost sanctimonious, condescending, dishonest a$$hole". Sounds like Nathan is describing the two jerks that own the shops here in Richmond. Wonder if the three of them are related.

I can appreciate Cappy's call for a boycott of the place. I hope all Browncoats boycott this Warp 1 Comics & they receive a ton of emails condemning their treatment of one of our BDHs. I know they just got the email I sent. No need to be concerned, it was worded strongly, put professionally. Not that such a dirtbag will care what we think.

Glad Nathan found comics elsewhere for his mother. What a good son he is.

Well, aside from speaking with the manager (which we are doing right now), there isn't much that can be done. But, there was an attempt to handle it better during the time in which he was there, and comic book guy had none of it.

There's a nice saying that I think is appropriate here:

We all lie in the bed we make.

And in Darryl's case, I'd imagine it's going to be a bed of nails.

I'm having to disagree with that.

Evil Comic Book Fiend sounds like his S.O.P is to rip off Joe Schmoe fan folk with his price gouging and until now, he's never run into anyone who truly has a LOUD voice to be heard in protest.

Would you consider it overboard to tell everyone you know to stay away from a business who did you wrong? That's all Nathan is doing ... only he's doing it better.

I'm hoping that something changes at that store - and hopefully for the good.

EDIT: Not saying my email if perfect (I'm personally rather not), but I hope that my fellow Browncoats aren't flying off the handle and are sending similar emails.

Here's what I just sent:

Dear Warp 1 Comics:
I am contacting you in regards to the recent incident involving Nathan Fillion and one of your
employees Darryl.

From the description of Mr. Fillion, Darryl was not helpful, sanctimonious, condescending, arrogant, dishonest and in general, ornery. Darryl's behaviour, from a consumer service perspective, is wholly unacceptable regardless if the customer was Mr. Fillion or any other person.

Darryl also passed up an opportunity for signed copies of the comic. An opportunity that will not present itself again.

I for one will never buy a comic from Warp 1 Comics and I know that others hold the same opinion.

So, what Warp 1 Comics has done in this one incident, is not only to lose such a rare opportunity of getting signed copies of a comic, but to lose many customers (and potential customers) in the process.

I hope that your company will learn from this experience and will better train there employees in customer relations. I wish your company the best of luck with resolving this issue.

regards,

They were sold out at every store in Tallahassee the first day. Had to buy mine on ebay. There's someone selling all 3 covers for $12.00. Not a super bad price...it could be worse, like the Captain's experience. Anyway they had 149 sets remaining so if anyone wanted to get them...they're there.

But as for them selling out...I'm a true true Firefly fan, and have been with the show since the first episode was aired, and if I can't get my hands on a comic anywhere in town, I'm hoping that means the movie is gonna sell tickets like crazy.

I think that Nathan is well within his rights, and the rules of good manners, to call for a boycott,
price gouging is like ticket scalping,
it shouldn't be tolerated.

If Russell Crowe had complained to his fans and called for a boycott of the hotel chain INSTEAD of throwing things at the desk clerk, then he would have received more sympathy...

At any rate I just bought the last copy of 'Serenity' at MY local comic book store,
and they knew it was sold out and they still didn't raise the price or try in any way to be greedy.

I think it's a hoot that Nathan got all "Malcolm Reynolds" on that jerk! Nathan used to say that he's nothing like Cap'n Mal, but perhaps portraying him for a while has crept into him.

The comic book guy was greedy, rude, arrogant, and most of all STUPID. He took a situation that could have been so positive and turned it negative.

It's being confronted with such a disheartening and enraging aspect of human behavior that can turn a good natured guy like Nathan into Mal.. on a bad day...

Enjoy your karma, comic book store jerk...

I thought the same thing when I first read through the post, but then I got to thinking. Chances are, the guy was a lot ruder than we saw just from the post. It obviously was enough to get Nathan's brother more angry and faster than nathan got angry himself. I'm willing to give Nathan the benefit of the doubt and say that he was certainly pushed past the limit.

Besides, $20 really isn't what they're going for, especially if you can find them now for cover price, and get them on ebay for $4+S/H.

BADGERSHAT

Just wrote an e-mail, tell me if I'm too subtle...

Quote:

Hello.

Just came to the attention of the Browncoat Army that a certain employee at your establishment, Darryl by name, is price gouging customers for issues of "Serenity."

Also came to our attention that he was, shall we say, "attitudical" to one Mr. Nathan Fillion, who, needless to say, portrays the main character in the TV series/movie that the aforementioned comic is based upon.

Mr. Fillion visited your store to purchase a copy, and it was then that the less-than-wondrous Darryl acted in his less-than-wondrous manner.

As of today, the entire tens of thousands strong Browncoat Army (as we choose to call ourselves) has issued a boycott against your store.

Scoff if you will, but you might want to check the stats--there's a whole damn lot of us, with a sizeable chunk located in Canada's fair city of Edmonton.

The boycott will be enforced until:

a) Darryl issues a public apology

or

b) Mr. Fillion decides to lift the boycott himself (since he's actually the one who called for it, it's only fair to leave the final decision to him).

We understand that not all of your employees are involved, nor are all of your employees guilty of such unpleasantness.

Unfortunately, all it takes is one rotten apple to piss off a legion of uncomfortably loyal fans.

Sincerely,
El Jefé
The Browncoat Army

Does that work, or should I have also called Darryl an a$$hat? (since that seems to be the word of the day... and I think i may borrow it, despite not having the slightest clue what the hell an a$$hat actually is... but sounds descriptive, doesn't it? Kinda like my neighbor, I call him "fuckles," which makes no sense at all, but cracks me and my family & friends up every time... and even though it's not even a word, no one seems to have any trouble understanding the meaning... okay, now I'm totally off-topic here).

Anyway, hope the point gets through clearly.

I'm willing to bet Nathan's in a position to afford $20, but that's not it, it was the principle. Why be all Badger about it? Bein' a wipe never helps buisness.
Wonder where Darryl will work next...

Only four voice mail messages?

There were a total of four messages on the voicemail. Two of them asked for an apology, and were calm and straightforward. One demonstrated the brilliance of internet persons who make good on their threats of action: "Hey Darrel, you suck." The final one was someone pretending to be from Dark Horse Comics (they publish the Serenity comic), threatening to not let us put any of their titles in our store. Advice to the anonymous woman who called: if you want to make us believe you, first a) leave a call-back number, because business is business, and b) know that we don't deal with DH directly.

CEDRIC

Here is the text of the email I sent:

Hello,

At this point, I'm certain that you know why I'm writing to you, so I won't rehash the issue, save to say that I completely support the Browncoat Army's boycott of your store.

I've read your opinion of "Internet persons"--a curious opinion from one who keeps a LiveJournal--so I'll try to make my points as politely and concisely as I can.

(1) Price-gouging is dubious from an ethical standpoint, but moronic from a business standpoint. Clearly, people are able to obtain the Serenity comics elsewhere, even in Edmonton, for the list price. The claim that you had to pay a higher price to get the comic at all does not excuse your immoral actions; it merely marks you as lacking in business acumen.

(2) Retail is a service industry, and sales flourishes on good customer relations. I know that I often make decisions concerning which small businesses to support based on the "feel" I get from the clerks and owners. Your Darrel from all reports is the kind of person who drives away customers, and in this case, he has driven away a very important customer. The fact that you stand by such a rude clerk makes me wonder exactly how personable you are.

(3) The Browncoat Army is a fanbase that was born out of guerrilla marketing. We were born out of a struggle against a business that thought it was important enough to ignore us--and let me tell you, that business was a whole lot bigger than you are. We were born out of the realization that we could act together and make our voices heard. We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

I pity you.

Read the blog; couple comments.

"""
with a sticker price of $19.99 because, of course, we had to go through the not-Diamonds secondary market
"""

And why wasn't this explained to the customer? Just stating that prices are firm and that is final isn't good customer service; it's actually quite poor. You have to explain things, especially since this price was so far over list!

"""
heated discussion takes place. I'm working the phone, so sadly I don't get in on the details.
"""

Pardon me, but heated discussion takes place in store and this guy didn't at least call out that he'd be right out? Sorry, but customers right there take precedence over anything on the phone, period; basic customer service. This guy is apparently in a position of power; whether owner or supervisor/whatever. So, why wasn't some leadership shown?

Why didn't Darryl get the supervisor?

Why wasn't the price situation explained?

Why does this guy think that he can comment on something that (s)he admits doesn't have the details on?

"""
whereas before we were dealing with one angry actor and his closest friends/family who he would relay the story to, now we get to deal with his fanclub.
"""

Some customers have more power than others. To quote one of my favorite movies:

When you play with the bull, sometimes you get the horns.

Price gouging is like playing with the bull (customers). This time, they got the horns (read: pissed off actor -> pissed off fan base). Still, getting the horns so rarely hardly gives reason for this behaviour.

"""
There were a total of four messages on the voicemail.
"""

At what time during the day. What about tomorrow? The next day? What about email?

It seems to me that this guy is cherry picking his/her info to make him/her-self look good.

"""
possibly Rick R. Zimmerman, Assoc. AIA
"""

Note about liability. If you aren't sure of the origin something, and it turns out that it isn't from who you think it is, this is call defamation of character. This guy should mind that.

But then again, should we really expect anything other than this from someone who uses the phrase "the internets"?

EDIT:
@Badgershat:
Not too subtle at all. Nice

@Cedric:
Touch aggressive for my taste, but still within the realm of goodness

Why didn't Nathan just call Joss right there? That would have been sweet.

That's what I was thinking! Nathan should have whipped out his cellphone, speed dialed Joss, explained it to him, then handed the phone over to Nerdboy Clerk. "It's for you!"

On a positive note, I dropped by my local comicbook store (The Fantasy Shop), and not only did they have a good supply of the Serenity 1st issue selling for list price, but they were playing an episode of Firefly on their monitors (Jaynestown). Seems the store is staffed by a few fellow Browncoats. Great guys, great stores (7 locations in the STL area). I'm sure if Nathan had visited one of their stores, his reception would have been much warmer!

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

Ok glad I'm not the only one who isn't sure where this one came from. Fact is last night i bought a new game on PS2 called Makai Kingdom, anyway they used this term in the game (one underworld overlord calling another an @$$hat.) Still funny.
