Me too, but no one's saying for sure that we can class it as a tenth planet just yet.

It's only exciting if they give it a shiny name.

Keep shiny!

Five years from now 4th grade students will be learning all about Planet Bob. (Ok, 10 because that's how long it'll take schools to order new textbooks).

And yes, that IS actually a Whedon reference :).

But... let's hope for something a little shinier.

And that name should be Persephone.

And please let there be someone who knows why that should be the case...and it is not a Firefly reference.

You'd think it would have made more sense to name Pluto's moon Persephone...

But hasn't this discovery also called into question whether or not Pluto is a planet? So if Pluto isn't a planet, then this new one would be the ninth planet, so they should call it Pluto. But if Pluto does keep its planet classification then we'll have to think of new name. Any major Roman gods not taken yet? There's Apollo but you wouldn't want the coldest planet to be called "Apollo". "Hercules"? Demi-god but still, he's got a high Q-rating.

You know, I am laughing up my sleeve pretty hard right now.

Some students of astronomy noted that gravity effects indicated there HAD to be a planet there, and their own name for it was Pan-Horus.

NASA, for years and years, told them they were 'smoking something' and where to stuff it, etc etc.

I also find it quite amusing that they were likely going to 'bury' this, but some enterprising little hacker collected those beans and spilled em.

Gee, NASA, after wiping all that egg off your face, you might admit that we were right after all, yes ?

I agree. Persephone would be a great name. (And yes I know why. I LOVE Greek mythlogy.)Plus, I think it should have a girl name since all the planets but Venus are named after men.

I am sure the Greek myth was the original inspiration, but my reference is to a very famous science fiction novel.

Actually, Persephone does not work. That is the Greek name. The planets are named after Roman gods. So it should be Proserpina, I think.

Close, it's Proserpine. Which isn't nearly as pretty sounding as Persephone, I think.

And I prefer the Greek names. We should change all the names of all the planets simply because I like the Greek names better!

I hope that it isn't desigated as a planet. If it is then in the next few years we will see around 100 new planets we will have to keep track of. I think Pluto shouldn't have been called a planet, but since the population is used to it and it is the first Kuiper belt object to be found I guess it's alright to let it keep its planet status. Any new chunk of rock out there needs a name but should not be given planet status.

I think ecgordon was talking about the "Known Space" stories by Larry Niven. Or Douglas Adams's novel "Mostly Harmless",

Nope, it was Arthur C. Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama, in which he mentions a tenth planet that had been discovered and named Persephone.

I read a book recently called funnily enough "The Tenth Planet". It is about the discovery of a Tenth planet in our solar system and the subsequent invasion/annihilation of Earth by the Aliens inhabiting this new planet. Not a bad book really.

I personally think we should call it Vera, and that's not jsut cos of firefly referanceness, but cos it'd be funny for a plannt to be named something quite ordinary.

You all seem to be missing the major problem that will arise now. All the ryhmes used to learn the order of plannets will now be extinct. AGHHHHHHH!
And this should be taken into concideration when deciding on the new plannets name. (if it is a new plannet etc.)
