Hello,
I'm hoping this posting is in the correct place. I couldn't find a forum specific to n00bish DVD questions.
I just bought the Firefly series on DVD off of eBay. The seller was a bit flaky and unreliable, so the following question has me wondering if he sold me illegally burned discs.
I can't find the audio commentaries on the discs. I'm new to Firefly, but have watched dozens of commentaries on movies/TV shows.
I read somewhere that the commentaries are accessible via the episode menu, but I still can't find them.
I insert the second disc, and select the episode "Shindig", which has an audio commentary. I choose "language selection", which I believe is the place to find them. Under "Language and Audio", the options are: 1) "English Dolby Surround", 2) "French Dolby Surround", and 3) "English 5.1 Dolby Digital ES". The Subtitle options kinclude: "English", "Spanish", "Chinese", and "Off". At the bottom are options for "Main Menu" and "Play Episode".
Have I just gone prematurely blind? Or is there something moronically simple that I'm missing?

ok, you are wondering if your discs are "real" or burned copies... easiest way to tell so far, (as someone who burns a lot of dvds) what color is the disc itself, not the art in the front, but when you look at the optical side, what color is it. if it is anything BUT( quickly refrences own set) a silvery-goldish-grey type color, they are likely burned.( most of the blanks i have run across are blue, or purpleish in color)
also please discribe the disc art& packaging.
should be 4 of the Uber slim cases in a cardboard sleeve, 1 disc per case, picture of, what i'm fairly certain IS mars, as the disc art on each disc, and the front cover of each disc has a different character. ( disc 1 - Mal, Disc 2 - Book, Disc 3 - Jayne, disc 4 - Zoe) as for which ones have the commentary tracks, here is the listing direct from the cases:
serenity
the train job
shindig
out of gas
war stories
the message
objects in space

hope this is of help!

...May have been the losing side, Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

You're right to be suspicious. I put my DVD in and went to the Shindig episode and selected audio options. On my version, I get options for English, French and Spanish Dolby versions; then the audio commentary option; and then the subtitle option for English or Spanish. I have the Region 1 DVDs so, if this is what you thought you were purchasing, I'm afraid you got a black market copy (from China it sounds like).

I'm sorry this happened to you because the DVD commentaries are wonderful, especially for the Serenity pilot and War Stories. Very funny!

"Appears they've cancelled the show and we're still here. What does that make us?"
"Big damn junkies, Sir!"
"Ain't we just."

Be sure to notify e-bay if it turns out to be a fake. I hope it doesn't. :(

The back of the disc is the silvery color most legit discs are. The set came in two standard thickness DVD cases, inside a larger cardstock box. Each DVD case holds two DVDs. One case has Mal on the cover, and the second Jayne. Each DVD has the correct labeling. Thanks for the detail. I looked all over and couldn't find a sufficiently detailed description of the packaging.

Thanks. I thought it was odd that the DVDs had Chinese audio and subtitle tracks. Here I just thought it was keeping in tone with the Chinese theme on the show.
The back of the case says it's Region 1, while legit Asian DVDs are usually region 0 (no region) or 3, or 6. I actually have quite a few Chinese language DVDs, for the Shield and the West Wing.
It's quite likely that these are bootlegs, but I'm amazed at the time and effort that went into recording Chinese audio tracks and Chinese subtitles.
I just need to find out if this rat bastard knew they were bootlegs, or if it was an honest mistake.

I did a quick search online, and as far as I can tell, Firefly DVDs have not been released in Asia. Additionally, if they were, they would not say "Region 1". At least I don't think so.

YT

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

Yup. Been four days & nobody with direct experience of region 2 has responded, so I will pass on a rumour: Region 2 sets had one fold-out case.

Keep the Shiny Side Up . . .
