SERENITYRISING

I was browsing for any updates about X-Men 3 when I ran into this "informative" tidbit on Movies.com, concerning the new Serenity trailer:

http://movies.go.com/buzz

Quote:

Geeks in Space. It's kind of cute the way all the little nerdlings get excited when a new Serenity trailer appears. It's gonna break my heart when they're the only ones in the theater on opening night.

This all courtesy of some guy named Mike Standish. I feel like we should return the love, don't you?

Errr... me angry. But seriously, where did this gorram fool come from, and why all this anger? If he wants to give a negative review of the movie (presuming he's actually seen it), that's fine. But he's just taking a cheap shot here. Perhaps he never got laid in high school, and just likes to throw the term nerd around to deal with his own insecurities.

Or... maybe he's just another Whedon-hater. There certainly are some out there. Either way, he'll have to eat his own words when the BDM takes over. But, until then, we've got to fight back in this war of words. Any one have any unique ideas about how to let our displeasure with Movies.com's coverage of the BDM be known?

Better idea:

Ignore him. Let him disappear behind the counter with the other roaches.

Won't it be fun just to archive his little bit of spleen and then break it out again when the BDM is hugely successful. Guys like this change their tune to appear to be cool and all knowing. When he gushes all over himself to praise "Serenity", bust this out and make him sniffle all the way to the virginity section of Spencer's Gifts.

*wondering if that made sense at all*

There's a virginity section of Spencers's Gifts?

BTW, I agree with your post. Patience, for our time will come. I'd rather back up our response with hard numbers than fanatical assumptions. (You and I know that Serenity will blow folks away, but we can't prove it... yet.) ;)

Yeah, I think there is virtue in letting the movie speak for itself. I just found it kinda a low blow to attack a movie like that. If nothing else, I'll let them know about it in my reader review.

And I encourage others to do likewise.

I went to www.movies.com, did a search for "serenity" and did not find the above quote.

What I did find is the "Pre-Release Buzz" frame where you get to vote. Currently, it's got 4.84 out of 5, and we can all vote for our BDM here: http://movies.go.com/movies/movie?name=serenity_2005&genre=scifi&studi
o=Universal

You can give it from 0 to 5 stars. (93% gave it 5 stars--"I'll be there to see it opening night")

A perfectly civil way to express our feelings, right, fellow nerdlings?

America loves a winner!

Gee..a movie reviewer gave a movie a poor rating. Stop the presses. Fine, this clown wants to try to make a name for himself by trashing something because it's different? The standard ' If there are folks who love this movie, I must destroy it, for that is how I'll become noticed!" tact. But 'little nerdlings'? Sounds like he's writing for his H.S. paper.

The fact that we got one at all is miracle enough.

We shall see what becomes of it, very soon.
And btw..the fact that it's rated 4.84 stars out of 5 from his own site must have been completely lost on that bozo.

Ironically, Sony has actually taken crap for quoting this creep as an actual movie reviewer.

Him and the non-existant "david manning" just love to gush on and on about certain studios wannabe films, and can be counted on to do so without even viewing them.

Consider well who he 'works' for, directly or indirectly - in fact, although no names were named, Sony also caught hell for posting 'reviews' by studio personnel, and then consider which movies he's bashing.

He's a desperate wanna-be interested in becoming a professionally paid sycophant for the industry (which 90% of movie reviewers are, lets be honest here) and willing to kiss as much fanny as that takes.

I have little respect for most reviewers because as a general rule, they NEVER come down on even the worst movies with both boots because they don't want to offend the studio and lose all the free goodies....

Of course he's gonna go riptide on Serenity, he probably 'hated' Boondock Saints too, because they weren't proper "formula".

Sad little king of a sad little hill, petty thug with delusions of standing... and the sad part is, if he kisses enough tail, they probably WILL hire him, ain't that just warped ?

How else you think most reviewers get hired, pffttt!

Browncoats-->Standish.

We vomit effusively in thy general direction!

I like the way you think Knibs.

I agree. We should just keep right on converting new people w/ the DVDs, get them interested in the BDM and do all we can to fill seats at the movie. Then, when the BDM is a Big Damn Success, we can watch naysayers like this motherless son of a Reaver eat crow.

3287 votes were cast for Serenity, 93% of them gave it a 5 "I'll be there on opening night" = 3056 people. 66 people gave it a 4* rating.

I really, really, really think we should NOT react to this guy. He has prolly seen how the Browncoats unite and react, and is hoping to get himself a bit of publicity.

Let's not give him the satisfaction!

God, these people just amaze me; these mindless drones who consider anything with a modicum of creativity and no connection to reality television or sports as an object of ridicule. Has this allegedly intelligent person even SEEN the movie, or is he just so broken and bitter by having no sense of what true storytelling is that he can't be bothered to alter his already narrow vision?

To this fool, I have just one thing to say, and while I won't send it to him and "feed the troll", I hope the sentiment is shared by my fellow browncoats:

Sir, and I use that title in the loosest way, few people are capable of proving themselves to be a narrow-minded, disrespectful imbecile in such a complete way as you have, so I congratulate you for your achievement. You are truly a model for jack*sses everywhere. I hope, with all the power a heart and soul can generate, that you are proven completely wrong when Serenity premieres in theaters, so that we, the Browncoats of the world, can turn to you, point our fingers of shame and ridicule, and laugh endlessly and heartily. Until such time, close that garbage shooter you call a mouth and sit in your dark corner, and stay out of our way lest you be shamed yet again, you lonely, bitter little half-man, you.

Yup, I think that just about does it.

After reading some of his other posts, I've decided that he's not worth a piece of my mind.

If being a high school teacher has taught me anything, he may be itching for a fight, so punching back may be a twisted kind of reward. I have some students who love getting attention when they misbehave in class and it's almost a badge of honor when they get disciplined.

I'm definitely a member of the "ignore him" camp.

He's part of the army of idiot writers engaging in easy snark for snark's sake. It's a most irritating trend -- and all too easy to trash something while it's still a borning. Easy drek like assuming that a new remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" will suck because most people didn't like "The Stepford Wives". I mean, you could question the wisdom of remaking a film that's already been remade five or six times, but how does he know the filmmakers aren't going some place interesting with this version. (I actually prefer the 197? remake directed by Phil Kaufmann to Don Seigel's first movie version of the Jack Finney novel.)

This is really a pet peeve. I can just imagine posts that might have been written in previous years....

"The Maltese Falcon" -- Warners insists on remaking this version of Dashiell Hammett's mystery for the THIRD TIME. Yep. It sucked twice, just try it again. And casting that George Raft wannabe Humphrey Bogart won't make this version any more successful.

"Citizen Kane" -- Orson Welles may be the most popular kid on Broadway and radioland, but movies are a whole 'nother matter. Watch for this one to sink without a trace.

***

It's also somewhat disheartening to see that he appears to be have made a short film and be working on a script -- assuming it's the same Mike Standish. Assuming he ever gets a feature out, wonder if he'll appreciate getting that kind of treatment.

I'm a critic myself at times (sorry, not feeding off any corporate teats as of yet), and I think that's why I find this kind of thing extra annoying.

NOTANERD

Hey Nerdlings:

Hopefully most of you read my post-Serenity report:

Serenity Now! I'm acquainted with nerds, but I'm not really one of them. At least that's what I keep telling myself. So this Joss Whedon sci-fi western sounded too nerdy, even for me. Well, I — and a theater full of soon-to-be-40-year-old virgins — saw a preview screening, and I can honestly say … it was awesome. In fact, it's inspired me to come out of the nerd closet! Where are my dice bag and Dungeon Masters Guide?

Yes, I've seen the movie and you haven't -- twice actually. Isn't that cruel? Now, just lemme know when you've calmed down a bit and maybe we can talk in a civil fashion. Also, when you tell me I can't "right" I assume you mean "write." Probably should use a spell-checker before you slam someone. Kinda takes the edge off when it's riddled with errors.

Cheers,
Mike

D6VETERAN

I am the Software/Application Engineer for Movies.com. I work with Mike Standish. He's the lead editor for out site and gets all the screening passes for new releases. He knows that I am a huge Firefly fan so he took me to the recent press screening of Serenity.

Mike has bashed this film every which way right up until the screening. As soon as the film ended Mike turned to me and said the movie was great. As we walked from the theater to catch our buses home he talked non stop about what he liked about the film. I have rarely heard Mike shower such appreciation on a film as he did on Serenity.

I've only worked with Mike for about a year but I can tell you he has a great sense of humor. He dishes out a lot but he also can take it in spades and keep a smile. I take a lot of nerd bashing from Mike, and I think a portion of that has carried over into his comments about Serenity and his jabs at the fan base. Myself and another Firefly fan at the office (our designer) have given Mike crap about what he's written about Serenity. We may have actually only fanned the flames.

I believe he's written positively of Serenity since seeing the film (and rightly so).

As much as I hated to see Mike snipe Serenity and the fanbase, he has succeeded in doing what editors seek to do: get people reading and discussin their content. In the end he called it right.

Keep in mind his comments were in our pre-release buzz and trailer reaction sections. This was not a review and it was intended to be very opinionated and off the cuff.

I will let you in on a big secret though:

Mike Standish is the biggest NERD I know. That man spent an entire weekend watching every single minute of content from the LotR special edition DVDs. I LOVED LotR but still haven't seen all that special edition content.

Oh and he also liked the movie Starsky and Hutch - that's not exactly nerdy but just an aweful movie.

Anyway I cannot wait to see Serenity again ... and again ...
