OK, another what if scenario. If you got the cash to buy your own mid-bulk transport like Mal, what would you name your ship?

Personally, I'd name it QUIXOTE. I like the sound of it, plus it kinda reflects my personality of someone who tilts at the windmills of convention.

And coming in at a close second and third, OCCAM'S RAZOR and ZATARRA (third name's a private joke for anyone who'se read COUNT OF MONTE CRISTIO)

So what would you name your ship?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

And wow! Hey! What's this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like ... ow ... ound ... round ... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground! I wonder if it will be friends with me?

I kinda like the name Hunter Gravis, the name of the ship from Pitch Black...
I think i'd call my ship Tau Zero, cause i like the way it sounds, and its all sciencey too...

Q: What do you have when you are holding two little green balls in your hand.
A: Kermit's undivided attention.

I like Quixote. One of my favorite words is Quixotic.

I'd probably name it "An Ordinary Cargo Cruiser" so that if the alliance spots me on sensors and asks what I am, someone'll tell the captain I'm an Orinary Cargo Cruiser and they won't know it's me. ;)

Really, all in all, it depends on the purpose of the ship and how it looks.

Shenhua cuz of my other obsession (the Shenmue videogame series) and Ning cuz it is chinese for Serenity ;).

I think mine would have to be "The Leaky Spleen".

Just what does a Spleen do anyway?

Hmmm..I don't know what a spleen does, but I remember when I was young, I got mono (don't ever get that, it's awful) and they were worried that my spleen would get infected and/or rupture. It was not a fun experience.

Can't think of what I'd name a ship. Anything I think would be interesting has already been taken: Icarus, The Nutmeg of Consolation, The Flying Dutchman, The Intrepid.

Guess I could always call it The Ploion, which is Greek for "ship".

Yay! My first post at FFF! Let there be joy and celebration; let jubilation reign! Pleased to meetchyall...

Though I'm partial towards sci-fi classics like the Nostromo, some of my all time favourites come from Iain M. Banks' 'Culture' series. For anyone who is not familiar with it, it is basically set in a verse where humanoids of a megaculture spend their time high on drugs and meddling in 'foreign affairs', while AI machines of various sizes tend to menial tasks. Among these minds are colossal (when I say big, i mean BIG!) self-sufficient ships, who often have nothing better to do with their time than to gossip and practice sarcasm.
This wit shows itself in some of the funniest (self-named) ships that sci-fi lit has ever seen, including:

GCU Ultimate Ship The Second
GCU Funny, It Worked Last Time...
GSV Anticipation Of A New Lover's Arrival, The
GSV What Are The Civilian Applications?
GCU Big Sexy Beast
GCU Boo!

A friend of mine was writing a story about a ship called the "Transgressor"

it even had a great line that went something like

I like the name of your ship. "Really," Maverick said "most people loathe it & think I'm up to no good"

"We had ties that could not be broken, except by the passing of time. Like a rock. A broken time rock. And you're very special to me, my broken time rock people." - Nathan Fillion

Oooow, at the OB we once had a magnificent battle between: Satan's Ship, The Catastrophic Bloodbath (led by fearless artiste 11th), and the Inappropriately Timed Nakedness.
Very inspiring thread ;)

But I liked Catastrophic Bloodbath, people sailing on that shop, not afraid of anything!

Having named a few ships in the RPG days of my youth, I recall that my cargo vessel was named the Photon Duck.

Other names I'd consider:

Maltese Peregrine
Excalibur Rex
Runnin' on Empty
Summer Wind

My Mum always says that when she grows up and has enough money to buy herself a boat she'll name it 'Pipe Dream'. Thats kinda nice.

Personally if I had a ship I'd name her 'Epiphenomena'. I love that word and have spent much time trying to explain what it means to the people I work with. I'm a student of philosophy and I don't understand half the things I say, I don't know how anyone else is supposed to!

"The Sweet Melissa", named after the girl I first fell in love with in high school, but was too much of a yellow-belly to ask her out.

Plus it sounds like a name an old merchant ship should have.

WIBBLEDTODEATH

Wow. So many good names. I must admit, I rather liked "Prosperity" & "Pipe Dream", as well as the ordinary cargo ship one.....among many others....I like modesty in a ship

But Firefly reminds me so very much of the Independence War computer games that i cant go past:

"Dreadnaught"

Big name for a lil ship.

Although some of the provocatively named Independant ships were good, such as:

Catch me if you can

UNO (Under new Ownership)

Come to think of it...I war was about a war between earth and the outer colonies-Independents or "Indies". I War 2 was post war...about a character trying to make it on a freelance cargo/smuggler/pirate ship. They even had a Firefly class interceptor...and other ships that look stylistically familiar.....

NERVOUSPETE

Sophie (Because I love Jack Aubrey's adventures)

The Ship (So I could confuse Alliance in a petty, entertaining way. "Captain, The Ship is on sensors." - "What ship?" - "The Ship!" - "No, what ship?")

Titus Alone (Yay! Gormenghast! And I really liked the third book, seeing it as prototype new wave Brit SF)

The Bertram Wooster (Bertie for short)

The Halo Jones (After the best ever female space-adventurer comic book, by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons)

The River Tam (Because I love her. Though this might make Alliance a little troublesome...)
