Hello humans, i am back but only intermittently this week as I am moving this week. ya boo sucks

If anyone wants to, my review of Serenity is in my blog. It is full of spoilers though so only go there if you are really sure that is ok. This is all I shall say about the film for now.

Fray, is it possible for you to reduce the pciture size? It is making the thread to wide to see without scrolling? Thanks hun

Hello everyone!

Waaay too much happened for me to comment on while I was away, so I won't bother.

So, I had to go to a wedding this weekend. Had a great time.

But I did have one little Firefly moment. I'm sitting at lunch with a friend before the wedding and I'm trying to think of something cunning to write in the card and all I could think of was "I wish you hundreds of fat children" which was not appropriate at all.

Exhausted. Must work. Have meeting in 1/2hr.

Bureaucrats are Evil, especially when they hold purse strings.

I've nearly finished re-installing everything on my 'puter after a re-format. By this evening I should have e-mail and Web apps restored from backups. Yay. Some disk sectors had gone bad and took driver data with them, and it's good to start over about once a year anyway, to clean out all the crapola that accumulates in Win-doze. She's running much faster now. Woot!

I'm certainly going to make a clean image of this system when it's set up again. I've only had it a year and this is the first major housecleaning I've done on it; I wish I'd imaged it the first time I tweaked it to taste but that's water under the bridge, eh? I do keep full backups of the whole thing, and keep them current, but I didn't want to just restore the same old gunk so I'm only restoring the data directories for e-mail and FireFox (and Lightwave, of course).

On a non-geeky note, I haven't found any threads discussing the Serenity comics; have I just overlooked them?

Comics. Non-geeky. Tee-hee.

Wish I could get one of you computer geniuses to visit my house once a week and deal with our computer and all the horrible stuff my grandparents do to it. And answer all their questions. ("How do I make the thingy work?") That would be a load of stress off my mind. I can't count the number of times I've had to show them how to use the scanner. I even printed out very detailed instructions and taped them to the top of the scanner. But they still can't do it.

I was wondering whether that bit would get noticed.

My relatives-with-computers pain comes mainly from a teen-aged daughter who believes that if it exists she should download and install it. She collects chat programs and e-mail addresses like (insert over-the-top simile here) and then gets frustrated when things start slowing down the system--or even crashing it. She thought getting her own computer was a cool thing, she doesn't realize it's so she doesn't trash anyone else's. *sigh* I'd take away the admin privs on her account but then I'd be pestered constantly about why she can't do this or that. I have to tread a line between teaching of lessons and keeping myself sane--just like the parent of any teen-age human.

The other pain in the neck is a brother-in-law who lives out of town, and is so clueless about his system he literally has to be talked through simple things like finding and opening up the control panel. He insists on doing stuff to it that's over his head (like adding drives and such), won't pay to have it done by a qualified tech, then calls me and tries to get free tech support to untangle his messes. I've had to refuse, tell him he has to take it in for service because I don't have time or inclination to waste on it. I think I finally got through to him, haven't had a call in a while.

I could never be a tech support person, I would be calling everying an idiot within seconds. I have no patience.

*AHEM* of course I meant user...
is starting to shout and scream at you because they can't do their work because you haven't fixed their computer, which isn't broken, they mearly don't know how to use it...

My favorite recently was I can't access the internet...
Actually she'd just changed computers and didn't have an internet history, and was incapable of typing www.google.com instead of google...
GRRR...

That and the ever ready:

This is my favorite tech support urban myth. Like that tale in the LAWYERS thread, it's just too rich not to want to believe in:

----

"Welch Hall computer assistant; may I help you?"

"Yes, well, I'm having trouble with WordPerfect."

"What sort of trouble?"

"Well, I was just typing along, and all of a sudden the words went away."

"Went away?"

"They disappeared."

"Hmm. So what does your screen look like now?"

"Nothing."

"Nothing?"

"It's blank; it won't accept anything when I type."

"Are you still in WordPerfect, or did you get out?"

"How do I tell?"

[Uh-oh. Well, let's give it a try anyway.]

"Can you see the C:\> prompt on the screen?"

"What's a sea-prompt?"

[Uh-huh, thought so. Let's try a different tack.]

"Never mind. Can you move the cursor around on the screen?"

"There isn't any cursor: I told you, it won't accept anything I type."

[Ah--at least she knows what a cursor is. Sounds like a hardware problem. I wonder if she's kicked out her monitor's power plug.]

"Does your monitor have a power indicator?"

"What's a monitor?"

"It's the thing with the screen on it that looks like a TV. Does it have a little light that tells you when it's on?"

"I don't know."

"Well, then look on the back of the monitor and find where the power cord goes into it. Can you see that?"

[sound of rustling and jostling]

[muffled] "Yes, I think so."

"Great! Follow the cord to the plug, and tell me if it's plugged into the wall."

[pause]

"Yes, it is."

[Hmm. Well, that's interesting. I doubt she would have accidentally turned it off, and I don't want to send her hunting for the power switch because I don't know what kind of monitor she has and it's bound to have more than one switch on it. Maybe the video cable is loose or something.]

"When you were behind the monitor, did you notice that there were two cables plugged into the back of it, not just one?"

"No."

"Well, there are. I need you to look back there again and find the other cable."

[rustle rustle]

[muffled] "Okay, here it is."

"Follow it for me, and tell me if it's plugged securely into the back of your computer."

[still muffled] "I can't reach."

"Uh huh. Well, can you see if it is?"

[clear again] "No."

"Even if you maybe put your knee on something and lean way over?"

"Oh, it's not because I don't have the right angle--it's because it's dark."

"Dark?"

"Yes--the office light is off, and the only light I have is coming in from the window."

"Well, turn on the office light then."

"I can't."

"No? Why not?"

"Because there's a power outage."

"A p--!"

[ARGH!]

"A power outage? Aha! Okay, we've got it licked now. Do you still have the boxes and manuals and packing stuff your computer came in?"

"Well, yes, I keep them in the closet."

"Good! Go get them, and unplug your system and pack it up just like it was when you got it. Then take it back to the store you bought it from."

"Really? Is it that bad?"

"Yes, I'm afraid it is."

"Well, all right then, I suppose. What do I tell them?"

"Tell them you're TOO STUPID TO OWN A COMPUTER!"

[slam]

Its a well known fact that windows does not have bugs, it has features.
Vista is still a Beta release, which means its still an unstable build, and released really only so developers can check there apps for compatibillity...
It should be better when its released... I hope...

Mac isn't very common over here, except for 2D graphic design, and even then they run along-side normal windows boxes...

I really thought that macs were no good at 3D, but I've never really used them... problem is that MS owns a controlling share in apple these days so, you know...

[[]GEEK_RANT[]]
Problem with IBM's is there still running on the same basic architecture as the original IBM 8080 back in 1980 I think. So we're trying to force more power down outdated architecture using an OS (i.e. Windows) that hasn't changed design drastically since the mid 90's, and even then it held to design patterns that were laid down in the mid-80's.
So basically, at their core, IBM machines are, you know, crap.

What's the gossip? What's going on? What's the scoop with TWG and the Pezzes? (Did it all get worked out, say yes!!)

TWG-I was thinking about you all weekend, concerned about you, sending happy vibes your way. What's this about a wig?

I can't speak for TWG but she wrote a lovely reply to WWP that showed her warmth and kindness - from an outsiders perspective anyway.

Just a little thing about the evil Bill Gates, could anybody else work out why he was on stage at Live 8? One of the main things they were campaigning for was fair trade which is anathema to Gates and his evil corporation. I nearly put my foot throught the screen

POG

I think Bill Gates was on stage because these days he gives about 95% of the profits of microsoft to charity. It's not unusual to get charity things that are sponsered by, for example, france, germany and the Gates', their charity donations are actually roughly comparable to an average country. Especially on the subject of HIV/AIDS where most of his stuff goes, so even though his OS is crap and the business practice has been a big dodgy in the past I think we should give him a little leeway!
