I had this thought while watching "Serenity."

With all of the characters the stories are kind of cramped in a one hour episode. With all the things going on in "Serenity" I started to worry that it wouldn't be all resoved very well by the end. But then remembered, that it was a two hour show so I just relaxed and enjoyed it as it all unfolded. I thought if the series has to die, then wouldn't it be great if there was a Firefly movie. And then perhaps a sequel. The movie could tie up all the loose ends from the series and provide some closure.

But if Joss can't sell the series, I suppose it's even more unlikely that he could sell a movie.

You very well could be right.
On the other hand...what about a TV-movie? Or mayhap a set of TV-movies...?
Remember how the series "Alien Nation" lived on in a a set of quite memorable TV-movies?
Who knows?
We can always hope...

I remember someone posting about the idea of making a series of DVDs that would continue the show. I've always liked this idea, unrealistic as it is, as it would creativly free-up the writers even more. Can you imagine Joss Whedon with no censorship whatsoever? Or Tim? Man, I shudder to think of how good that would be. Tis but a dream...

I was thinking the same thing! I was watching an advertisement for "The Land Before Time XXXII: Littlefoot Sinks in a Tar Pit" when I commented to my wife that I don't remember this ever being out in the theaters. She said it never was. Disney released it right to VHS. Is that a possibility for Firefly?

A series of TV movies could be a possibility... remember 'Young Indiana Jones Chronicles', it lived on in about 5 or 6 movies. Same thing with old 'sucessful' TV shows. Matlock, Murder She Wrote, Hunter, V, MacGyver, etc...

I am more interested in the direct-to-DVD option. I dont think there is any chance that this will actually happen, but it would be cool.

Fox made one season of Alien Nation and then five two hour TV movies spread over (I think) three years. I think more networks should experiment with this approach to a show, especially a genre show.

However, with Firefly I want 22 hours + a year worth of new episodes. This is fertile ground in the hands of one overworked master storyteller with a cast, crew and fanbase enamored by him. Firefly's universe needs to be explored at length.

I would recommend the TV movies or direct-to-video route for tired concepts like the Star Trek universe. Enterprise doesn't have more than one or two good ideas a year. Stretching that show out along 26 episodes (one of the only series that still produces that number!) is just a very bad idea. As for Nemesis... bad movie but possibly a good TV movie?

it intesting, i think the BBC does stuff like like, lots of mini-series and only producing like 6 eps every season for their shows. it makes for very diverse viewing.

keep flying.
