Bummer; I so wanted one of those chocolates. Ah, well.

In yappy, newsy news stuff ...

My brother-in-law's house in New Orleans is almost certainly completely flooded. We looked at aerial photos of that area and everything's under water; even though we didn't pick out his specific roof top, it's fairly certain everything's a loss. He, his girlfriend and their six cats are now residing at a farm in Wisconson, owned by her family. They're not sure what to do next, they both worked at Tulane Hospital (where the sniper fire halted evacuation efforts for a couple of days) and of course now have nothing but what they took out with them (plus a soggy, toxic-chemical-ridden house they can't get back to).

My cousin was allowed to visit his house in Biloxi briefly. He couldn't get in, the doors were swollen shut, but what he saw through the windows didn't look good. The roof was stripped down to bare boards (he sent pictures, it looks awful), and the interior ceiling had caved in at several spots. Furniture was tumbled around, so it's certain there was high (and fast-moving) water inside at some point.

About 100 people with the company I work for live/work down there and were directly affected. On the plus side our CEO set aside US$2 million for direct aid to cover their expenses and help get them settled somewhere, plus 100% matching of anything we contribute to the fund. I thought that was wicked cool of him, and certainly a tremendous help to those poor people.

I feel a little guilty at times: my current biggest problem is whether there's any fresh coffee made or will I have to start a new pot.

I can certainly relate. I guess it helps put things in prospective.

In recent year I think I've become rather self-centred and big-headed, and it wouldn't hurt me to keep my feet on the ground.

I'm glad that they all got out okay, and I wish them the best of luck making new homes and lives for themselves.

Ahh, I'd go with Fray's choice...after all, I've never had long hair to tackle with!

Check out the photo her in the Blue Sun room.

Check out the pictures on the table in that photo. Why aren't we getting cute pics of Jewel from Serenity?

Spinland, hope everyone's OK. And don't feel guilty. These huge events are always so strange for people who aren't directly involved - you feel bad, then you feel bad that you don't really feel bad because you're not actually affected.

Thanks for the update on the comic - hopefully I can get hold of one (two? three?) at the weekend. Aren't I grateful my theatre ticket coincides with their release?!

Reckon I know which Jewel photo I'll get - the one of her sitting. As for those Stargate ones, well...Of course I'm still clinging to the faint hope of finding the Kaylee cover, otherwise I think I'll get the Visual Companion signed as my personal item.

Thanks for the good thoughts; everyone I personally know is okay, which is a very good thing. I just (in the past few minutes) got some e-mail at work: everyone but one person in our company has been found; that one person is still missing which is not a good feeling. Hopefully he got out okay and has just been overlooked in all the chaos.

I loved that picture of Jewel, she looks great as ever. I've never been to a con, are those photos in front of her examples of ones you can buy and have signed?

I noticed some pictures of a poster where River looks like Amy Lee (of Evanescence) holding an axe and a sword. Is that the Australian poster I heard mention of?

Thats nice of you to say TWG, I have been working out and all, uh, what, oh, well, yeah of course I knew you didn't mean me...

Oky day Fray, I'll take a look at Forbidden Planet and Comicon and that other one, you know, the one with the name I can't remember at the moment, tommorrow and report back with my intel at approximatly 1400 hours.
Glad to hear the laptop's working, its hard to tell what options will be available since every device is different, but using the old blind clicking technique has worked a number of times for me...
'cept then the user always says:
"You fixed it! ohh what did you do?"
And I don't know, so its waffling time...
Who says you can't learn anything from Star Trek?
"Well you see a tachyon surge in your force net caused an overload in the bus-b-buffer, that ended up with a cascading failiure. I simply reinitialised the baryon emmiter and reinstalled the central core and your good to go."
They didn't understand a word of what I said so they're happy and I'm happy cause they stop asking me questions... so everybodies happy...

It went pretty much like this:

"Oh, how did you fix it?"
"I have no idea."

GOSH - is that the other one? That's the one opposite the British Museum. Cheaper than FP too. There's another one just round the corner too, not sure what that's called but couldn't find any Serenity comics the last time I looked anyway. Good luck with the hunt anyway!

BTW, any Brits come across the novel in the shops yet? I gave up buying film adaptations a long time ago, but might just go for this one.

I'm gonna post up a spoiler-free review of the BDM that I just stumbled across. It's probably been linked/posted/whatever somewhere else, but when I read it I thought it was one of the best bits of writing I've seen in a while and I want to repeat it; this thread's kinda quiet right now, so here I plant it.

I'm also e-mailing it like mad to people I'm trying to convince their lives won't be worth living if they don't get out and see it during one of the first two weekends it plays here.

----
"You don't watch this film - you survive it" - Steve D on Serenity (No spoilers!)

Serenity is an awesome film. Literally. It provokes fear and wonder in equal measure, and on massive scales.

It’s also good, by the way. In fact, it’s exceptional, it’s brilliant, it’s incredible, it’s everything we wanted and nothing like we expected. It stands well on its own and should appeal to a fairly wide audience. As Joss said in his introduction, Firefly is for everyone and there is a lot here to enjoy. A lot of geeks will likely see it, and like it for being a great sci-fi action story, and it might even pick up some street cred in the mainstream. It’s not going to be Fellowship of the Ring but it could be bigger than Pitch Black and Solaris put together.

Okay, that’s all the obvious stuff out of the way.

It does stand alone. I was worried at the end that it mightn’t, but that was just because as well as introducing everyone, it also feels like the epic conclusion of the series. But it has a tight arc, pitching the universe and the characters quickly, and ending with the kind of big denouement which is necessary for a film. You can know nothing about Firefly before or ever again afterwards, and you will get a complete, satisfying film experience.

It does fit the series, yet it is also not the series. The characters are never wrongly portrayed, but they are slightly different in places. One gets the feeling a fair bit of time has passed since Objects in Space. Enough for things to get really raggedy. The feel is also different as a result. It keeps the emotional core of the series, but there is an adjustment of tone. Things are harder. Darker. Faster. All bets are off, and no holds are barred.

Most notably, the serenity of Serenity is gone. In order to explain this universe, introduce nine characters and tell their story and the galaxy’s, the film needs to move fast. It compresses all the excitement of Return of the King into just two hours and it does this by bombarding you with action and events. Not that character is ever forgotten, it just happens at the same speed as the action – fast and furious. Up until now, the crew have been able to tread water gently. Now, their debts and promises are being called in, and they’ve hit the rapids. Big time.

Which means at the end of the film, every muscle in my body hurt like hell, because I’d been clenched the whole time. I breathed in somewhere in the first minute and forgot to breathe out until the credits were rolling. There were tears in my eyes, but I didn’t know why yet; the real catharsis didn’t come until much, much later, dragged out of me in stages. Like when you get hit with a truck, and you don’t feel the pain until the shock wears off.

Tears. Shock. Pain. Yes, this is a heavy-going film. I’ve talked before about how, regardless of how much I adore the writing, I have trouble watching War Stories, because I literally can’t stand to see such realistic suffering put upon characters I feel very close to. And I don’t just mean the captain and Wash, I mean the choices the others make, and the horrors they are exposed to. Well, Serenity goes beyond War Stories, cranks the suffering and drama up well past eleven, past twelve, then lodges it somewhere around fifteen, tears the knob off and sets fire to your stereo.

As my good friend Cat said: “I don’t know if I’ll see it for the official preview. I mean, I love it, but do I want to put myself through that again?” Serenity is an event. You don’t see this film, you experience it. No, you SURVIVE it. Afterwards, you try your best to walk away without crying, or falling over, because your legs don’t work any more. Serenity tears you apart and leaves a giant gaping hole in your soul. It’s storytelling so hard and sharp it cuts like an axe to the chest.

One day, in a few years, I’ll probably have seen it enough to really comment on it as a film. Right now, it’s an experience. For me, and for my favourite characters. It doesn’t feel like a film. At no point in watching it did I ever think I was watching a movie. I was instead finding out what happens next to some amazing people I know, who were caught in a hellstorm of grief in a universe that despises them, and who were forced to ride that storm out to the last bloody drop of their strength, because they had no choices left.

If you sow the wind, you will reap the whirlwind. Firefly sowed the wind. Serenity is the whirlwind. And it’s a monster.

- Steve D, Brisbane, Sept 5th, 2005.

Well, we're going to be down in Pensacola, Florida visiting my parents during opening weekend, so we plan to drag them along to see it. Also, my sister & her husband live in Mobile, Alabama, right on the edge of the damage from Katrina, and they had a rough time of it. That's less than an hour from Pensacola, and they're both big Babylon 5 fans, so I e-mailed her the review and am trying to talk them into tearing away and joining us for the viewing--make it quite a family affair, it would.

I'm a geek too, see:
A baryon is an elementry particle, so I reckon I could have swung it, but then all tachyons are, are particles with negative rest mass so that they can't travel slower than the speed of light, as for Star Trek science its absolute lobbocks with the odd sciency word thrown in to make it sound good:
i.e. Treknobabble...

I've never said anything quite that bad, but I have waffled on for ages, sometimes cause I can't remember, sometimes cause I've done the same boring mechanical job for a thousand other people and they've all asked me the same question... So I have to do something to have a bit of fun .

PBJ and a tall, frosty glass of milk. Not anything fancy, mind you, but it hits the spot and all that.

I'm for blueberry, but strawberry is #2. Anne's the other way: strawberry's on top in her book. We pick both kinds of berries every summer and make up a batch of jam from each.

You might have more luck stuffing the PBJ into the glass of milk, citizen--though then again, that might make just as big a mess.

Don't know about Peanut Butter milk, but Ed's Diner (by the Trocodero) does a cracking Peanut Butter milkshake! It's like a drink AND a meal in one!

The best of all worlds, then: PB & blackberry milkshake.

I really don't know much about any up-coming movies, I fear. Apart from the BDM I've not heard of the movies on that list. I do know there's a re-make of King Kong coming down the road, and I expect it'll be a good one; apart from that I couldn't name a single thing that's showing these days, or that will be showing in the near future. I'm so out of touch with such things.

i'm just trying to distract myself from all the Serenity dreaming...I figure movies about Canadian blood bathers and android love may do it...but only for a few minutes.
