More of us (yes, it's us now ) have seen that Big Damn Movie.

Some, and more yet, are going to the Serenity² con. A few will be in the meet and greet.

But one question remains:

Where did Emma hide the chocolate?

Answers on a... Hey, what's the point? If any of us finds the chocolate, it's not like we're going to tell anyone, is it?

"My God - you're like a trained ape. Without the training."

Is that for the sweatshirt or the ticket?! Coz, you know, the ticket is still the same price (plus the £1.21 ransom fee paid to the Royal Mail!).

Hope you're geared up for comic hunting! Can you get me a raspberry Krispy Kreme from Tesco Metro while you're out too? Thanks

Well presumably you can't hear the "squeeeeeee" in space....

Hmmm, I did an essay at school once where the heroine was murdered at the end during a 4th July firework display, and ended with a play on her not being able to hear people scream in space. Can't remember what mark I got for that, but not sure it was the sort of thing we were supposed to be writing about...Mind you, I also did a "book" review of the Doomlord comic strip from "Eagle"!

No, it's not Smelly Cat, though that would be funny. I can't give you the tune since it's one Cedric made up. And I don't think he's got it recorded anywhere. Very simple though. I remembered the correct lyric on one of the lines so I went and changed it.

At ease Private. Job well done.

So, seems like I'm off to GOSH on Saturday (which is good, because it's cheaper!). I just hate that Simon cover, but will buy it if it's all I can find.

Excellent question - don't know whether we've had second printings yet.

Anyhoo, just phoned GOSH and asked them to put aside River & Simon for me. Damn it, just realised they have Kaylee as well - back on the phone! And Rel, I prefer to buy in store so I don't have to pay the same as the comic (or more) in P&P!

(hey, where's Carol? I wanted to know whether she sensed the virtual hug I sent her around 8.10 last night!)

Right, called GOSH back - am vaguely hopeful that they understood what on earth I was going on about (Them: "What's a "Kaylee" cover?", Me: "Smiling girl in dungarees."!)

Spinny-don't you start going all Jubal Early on us.

Here is my thought on the subject, though. When you squee, it is the external expression of an internal emotional response. So, even if the external sound is not heard, the internal response still happened, so the squee still existed, even if only internally. Make sense?

And when trees fall in the forest, the other trees hear and mourn.

So the act of squeeing imbues the squee itself with meaning, even if it's not actually heard.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have a second or two before you actually explode or decompress or whatever? That's just about enough time for one last, quick sque- if you ask me.

A neat little discussion of what really happens to a body in vacuum can be found at this link:

http://www.sff.net/people/Geoffrey.Landis/vacuum.html

A summary of the findings:

Quote:

A frequently asked question is: how realistic is the scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey where astronaut Bowman makes a space-walk without a helmet? How long could a human survive if exposed to vacuum? Would you explode? Would you survive? How long would you remain conscious?

The quick answers to these questions are: Clarke got it about right in 2001. You would survive about a ninety seconds, you wouldn't explode, you would remain conscious for about ten seconds.

What sort of payscale level can you live with? Some entry-level jobs have modest advancement potential and train you off the street; thinking supermarket cashier, for example.

A couple of large banks have headquarters up here, and hire entry-level positions in things like import/export money transfers; people who get such jobs begin with a 4.5-month training program, and only need such qualifications as being comfortable with computers and having moderate typing skills.

Similarly Met Life has a big local presence and hires claims handlers, or whatever phone people are called there.

Just some local examples; corporate headquarters presences generate a lot of clerical staff jobs that I imagine don't require much by way of initial skills sets. Assuming starting off the street with zero credentials limits the imagination somewhat.

There's a local organization called Working Solutions that specializes in matching job seekers with likely employers--and does it for free (non-profit, funded by grants). Something like that would be golden for you, methinks, if you can find such.
