I saw the posters for Serenity on the Tube last night. They are awful, if i wasn't already familiar with firefly I would not go and see the film. Surely the idea of movie posters is to encourage the public, who are unaware of the film to, to go and see the film. this poster has the exact opposite effect (IMO). The postery is mainly grey, all the characters are standing spread out evenly all posing with guns and river is in the foreground with an axe and sword, the overall effect is of some cheap vapid action movie with no depth or plot. Who ever is responsible for this should be fired, the poster has little to do with the atmosphere and style of Firefly and has all but guaranteed that no bypasser unfamiliar with firefly will go and see it.

Joss if you read this please have a serious talk to the people who deal with advertising and promotion in the UK as they have singlehandedly managed to sabotage the boxoffice takings for Serenity, I can only hope this doesn't impact any future firefly related projects.

I am so annoyed by this.

Wahoo!! I'm just glad it's being promoted. Fair enough if you don't like the poster, but negative posts like this aren't gonna do much to change it, are they?

You could of course make youe own poster, and stick it up on the tube if you like! Why no submit it for fray101's poster competition too? You can find it in her sig. You could win a free Serenity t-shirt.

Yeah your right probably a little bit too negative

Its just annoying when something that can be done so well and is not hard to get right is done so wrong. It just stinks of a 'couldn't care less' attitude by the promotion people.

I stand by the thing about it significantly reducing the takings of the film... the poster doesnt make you go 'hmmm I must go and see that'. we need more than just the existing fans going to see it. Why couldnt they use the US posters? (unless they are the same, then ouch!)

Firefly/Serenity is, thankfully, a complex and diverse TV show/movie. If it was possible to convey its atmosphere and the whole idea behind Serenity in one relatively small 2D, motionless, soundless image, then I think we ought to be very very worried about what the hell kind of BDM we're supporting.

As it is, I think that the stuff shown is the kind of thing that brings people in. Sure, maybe I'm superficial, but I'd go see it with THAT poster. If I didn't already obsess over it, that is. You might not like it, but it's probably the kind of poster that's going to draw people in.

I agree...it'll probably appeal to some of the masses...

To be honest, I don't really like the poster either. But I did like the US one. A lot of people seemed to hate the US one, and a lot of people love the British one. So its swings and roundabouts.

I'm certain thats not the case at all...

I mean, there not promoting this film, just out of their hearts, for us fans! They do actually wanna make this film a success, so they can earn some dosh. So I'm sure they care plenty.

To be honest, I'm just pleased to hear its being promoted...publicity is what we need.

They're the professionals...it wouldn't hurt us to have a little faith in them.

Sabathius, just to reassure you that you are not alone. There's another thread around someone ("New Australian Poster") which quite clearly shows that people are very divided. Personally I don't like it - would I be drawn to it if I wasn't already a Firefly fan? Maybe, but it's not a film I'd rush out to see on that basis.

The US poster is different, if you pop along to my home page ( www.destinything.com) you can see both, and can also vote for your favourite. I haven't actually seen the version being used in the UK yet so you might find the international one on the home page is slightly different. There's a picture of a third variant (the German one) on the Serenity page on the same site.

"rhe overall effect is of some cheap vapid action movie with no depth or plot."

I'd have thought there is a far bigger market for vapid action movies than cerebral sci-fi ;)

That, I believe, is the sad-but-true reason behind the tone of the movie posters. It's kind of like hiding vitamins in candy.

I don't know what your problem is, but I bet it's hard to pronounce.

Well, every person I know, including myself used the word "Cool" when they first saw this poster. Personally, I think that more people would see Serenity based solely on seeing this poster, than seeing the US poster. At least this poster makes the film look exiting and kind of cool. I guess it comes down to how you interpret image.

Fray101 thanks for those links :)
After my rant I'm a bit embarrassed to say I quite like the German version.

Grounded, you're probably right; this type of poster may get more people.. just wasn't thinking of the overall demographic (ah the joy of being a judgmental snob ..doh ^-^)

Still like the US poster a bit old school starwars :)
