There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I assume this review will be in the issue due on newstands tomorrow.

http://www.ew.com/ew/article/review/movie/0,6115,1110760_1_0_,00.html

First off, who is Scott Brown, and why didn't either Owen Gleiberman or Lisa Scwartzbaum review Serenity? Perhaps since Brown confesses to being a Firefly fan I guess that's why the task fell to him.

But reading his review would lead you to believe his rating of it would be higher than a B.

WTF?

EW has been so good to us the last few months, now they damn us with faint praise. Does that seem right to you?

Yeah,
Sort of a bummer. I was expecting the review to say best film of 2005, but I'm really curious to see what Ebert, and Roper have to say about it. If they dog it, that could really hurt us.

America loves a winner!

B's is nice.

Not great, but yeah, he does go back and forth a bit on how good the movie is, but not really. (huh?)

Time to see what the public thinks.

" They don't like it when you shoot at 'em. I worked that out myself. "

Could you please just make it stranger? Stranger. Odder. Could be weirder. More bizarre. How about uncanny?

Yes, let the box office receipts tell the tale.

Ebert loved it - I mean loved it. Don't know the star rating yet (won't post till morning) but it will be a very positive review.

I don't bother with the people who don't give the immediate and incredible esteem that Firefly deserves. Even if the article gave it's praises, we all know that much more should have been dealt.

But the series and writing is so clever, that I can watch and re-watch the episodes and continue to find more subtle nuances... It's pure brilliance.

And we can't expect everyone to have the depth to recognize brilliance.

Always, Karen

I think EW's review was fair. I love Firefly as much as the next browncoat, but let's face it--Serenity is not an Academy Award type of film. Those are the sorts that get the A grades. An A grade might even put some people off, because they associate "A" films with artsy, dramatic boredom.

I like "B." It says fun--not pretentious, but not crap either.

The problem with that is "Serenity" is so much better than "not pretentious, but not crap either."

Well, this is just me, of course. For me,

A = either pretentious or near flawless
B = good fun
C = mediocre
D = crap
F = piled higher and deeper

And don't stone me all at once, but Serenity wasn't near flawless for me. That's ok. It was still great fun, and I'll still go see it as often as I can. But this was Joss' first feature film effort, and it shows. A lot of the reviewers describe Serenity as a TV finale on the big screen, and I don't think that's too far off.

Now I'm not faulting Joss at all. I think he made an admirable transition, and he is only going to get better and better. But is Serenity near perfect and deserving of the top grade? For me Firefly is, but Serenity has room to grow.

Oh, Serenity has its flaws...which, in the theme of all things Serenity, it should. So really that takes it to a whole new level...hrm...

I have to agree that the movie is so much more than what you see on the surface, and that is what makes it an A grade film. Artsy? Well, yeah, actually, but in a whole new way.

All the characters have music/instruments that define them in the score. The attention to detail, like in the series is phenomenal, and with the seasoned cast returning, the performances are as true and believable as one could hope for. The script is engaging, the dialogue is crisp and witty. You get everything you want from an artsy film AND it is action sci-fi.

'A' is the only fair grade for this movie (even with the flaws I noticed which I won't spoil for the people who haven't seen it yet, but 2 of them are special fx oops!).

You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll get angry, you'll suffer, you'll scare and you'll cheer. It is the smoothest ride in the 'Verse too. A great plot which makes you think, but not too much.

Best movie ever? Maybe not, but you'll have to argue long and hard with me to prove something else is better. I only wish they had kept the hot lesbian sex in there...well, maybe the director's cut DVD will have it! (Truth be known, I really want the deleted scene because I think it speaks volumes for Inara and her relationship (or lack thereof) with Mal...lesbians were just a bonus taco!)

A leaf on the wind,

The San Diego Tribune, the newspaper that I get everyday reviewed Serenity and gave it two and half stars, now is like a B or...not?
I couldn't tell if the person who wrote the review liked it or not. I'm guessing they thought it was ok. But is two & half stars bad, right??
Also, at Moviefone( http://www.moives.aol.com/) Serenity is #1 as their top requested movie.

May have been on the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
