Does anyone have a date (or estimation) of when we got the official word that the movie was a go, that is to say how long we've been waiting with bated breath?

SLAYTHIS

The first I heard that the movie was in development was in early September, 2003. Within a couple weeks or so, reports of a greenlight and casting being firmed up began appearing on "Aintitcool" and such sites. I'm not certain when Universal officially announced the project, but I think it's fair to say that we've been waiting exactly 2 years for this movie, and for that matter, about 2 years and 10 months for more (anything more) from the Firefly 'verse.

there is a good article here:

where they mention that the DVDs didn't even go on sale until Dec 2003
is that right?

Yes. Joss has said repeatedly that Universal was on board before the good DVD sales; however, the sales probably made the execs more comfortable with their decision. It's possible the DVD sales also got the movie a slightly bigger budget or less interference, but I'm just speculating.
