ok, so there i am in the theater watching the BDM, and

Select to view spoiler:

in the scene when they first get to haven, and Mal & book are talking about the operative and belief and what not, (consults Visual Companion)
MAL:
...But the Alliance'll be coming. The'yre after this girl with a powerful will. I look to hear the tromp of their boots any moment.
Book:
You won't

This isn't a palms up Military Run, Mal. No reports Broadwaved, No Warrants... much as they want her, they want her hid. That means Closed File. Means Operative, which is Trouble you've not known.

[little later]
Book:
Sorta man they're likely to send belives hard. Kills and never asks why.

MAL:
it's of interest to me how much you seem to know about that world.

when suddenly it occurs to me. and becomes so clear i wonder why i didn't see it at the pre screening...

Book was an Operative himself.
not in the sense of Still is, But was in the past. and he then joined the clergy following a crisis of belief such as this operative has.
anyone care to disagree??
so in conclusion

i'll be damned if it wasn't a great movie!!

Had the exact same thought my own self...

Especially when Book follows up with, "No I don't," and they just look at each other. To me that's clearly Book acknowledging that what Mal already suspects is accurate.

Yeah. I interpreted it as telling Book's back story through the Operative. If you look how the Operative ended up (combined with all the knowledge & experience Book has), I figure it has to be it. But I'm amazed how many fans I've spoken to that missed it, but when explained, boy do the lights come on.

I'm inclined to agree... but there's one little kink in that idea I'm unsure of. Just to be safe, I'll mark spoilers.

Among the senior Parliament members, the fact that the reavers were 'created' by the Alliance is no secret. I thought it was implicit that the operative knew this as well.

Book, though, doesn't know all that much about the Reavers' past. In Bushwhacked, he seemed to know about as much as Mal, saying that they were "perhaps too long removed from civilization, but men." He didn't seem to be lying in that statement.

Then again, I'm no reader and he could've been putting on a ruse. Or, it's possible that when Book was an operative, he was kept in the dark about the Reavers' origins as well. And, it's possible that this operative doesn't know about the Reavers' background, he just does his job blindly, or with extreme tunnel-vision.

Considering the caveats... I think that theory now is the most sound. KF

ZOE: Preacher, don’t the Bible have some pretty specific things to say about killing?
BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps...

I disagree with that last one...

Select to view spoiler:

The fact that the alliance created the Reavers is a HUGE secret in the Parliant. A few know it, but only "key members"

Also, the operative seemed really try not to learn the secrets. He said that he wanted to protect them, not learn them. If he already knew that the alliance created the Reavers, then he wouldn't have been shocked when mal showed him the movie in the end. There wouldn't have been any reason for him to change his mind about the Tam's.

If Book was very similar to the operative, then it's likely he didn't try to figure out any of the secrets either. He may have even help protect the Miranda experiment without ever knowing what was going on...

... maybe.
