From DigitalBits.com:

Our ever reliable industry sources are telling us that Universal will soon announce the DVD release of Joss Whedon's Serenity for 12/20. Early word indicates that the disc may include Whedon audio commentary, along with at least 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Future History, We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time, Re-Lighting the Firefly and What's in a Firefly), a video introduction to the film by Whedon and 6 minutes worth of outtakes. Some of the details on the extras comes from the BBFC website. We'll post more as it comes in.

OK I am colored very confused here. I'm not sure if this is saying the announcement will come on 12/20 or if the disk comes out on 12/20. If it's the latter, that ain't good news, kids. That mean Universal has already given up on teh box office.

It's bad because "successful" movies are not released on disk 3 months after opening in theaters, the wait is usually longer.

A possible glimmer of hope is this is an old date based on the April opening.

Digital Bits is a well respected DVD site, been around since, well, DVD's

I'm not surprised as well. SHAUN OF THE DEAD came out around the same time as SERENITY did last year and it was one of the gifts I got last year at Xmas. I was kinda hoping SERENITY would be out by Xmas this year as well. Just as long as they have two tracks on it. One by Whedon himself, the other with Whedon and the entire cast.

C'mon, who's a lit-tle fear demon?
GILES: Don't taunt the fear demon.
XANDER: Why? Can he hurt me?
GILES: No, it's just… tacky.

It might be a mistake. I dunno. I'm not so worried bout that. I'm more worried bout DVD sales. Hopfully the DVD sales for Serenity will be very successful like the Firefly DVD box set. I dunno bout u but when the Serenity DVD does come out, I'm buying, like, ten.

Did someone say 6 minutes worth of outtakes?? SCORE!!!

In my humble opinion, this may not be what it looks like. As mentioned in another thread on this board, Universal plans to release King Kong in theatres and on DVD the very same day and they also have plans to place movies online in the near future. I don't think we should lose hope yet. It sounds more to me like Universal is just adjusting their marketing strategies to suit today's viewers; they don't seem to want to rely as much on the box office. Just my two cents

December?

One phrase - CHRISTMAS PRESENT!

Why not release it at the time of year when more people are gonna be buying DVDs? Seems smart enough move to me.

Exactly. Releasing it after Christmas would be dumb, unless its still flying in the theaters in the top 5 or something and if thats the case they'll push back the release.

I wouldn't panic; if they made this announcement so soon after release (less than a week!) then they had planned this from the start--part of a general marketing plan, rather than a reflection on current box office take.

And for the record, Serenity isnt doing as badly as some people think; it opened in second place, first for new releases, with a good per-theater take, especially for an off-season release.

Still, this second weekend is key, so go see it again with six-eight people you love.

In film 2005 with johnathan ross it was mentioned that studios were looking at releasing dvds the same time as movies due to declining box office reults

Actually the King Kong DVD is a 2 disk Making Of, not the movie itself...
