Director's Cut DVD??? ***spoilers***

So, for those who have read the script book and seen the movie (I highly recommend the script book) Perhaps you can offer me your oppinion. I noticed that there was a lot more Inara and great Joss humor in the filmed pre-edit version. Thinking back on the movie, I wonder if her profession was even mentioned, or who she was to the ship. I recently read a review that referred to her as Mal's ex-girlfriend, but then again it also referred to Simon as River's incestuous brother...it was a very strange review. Anyway, I don't want just a director's cut or just the theatrical version. I'm greedy, I want both. I don't want to just see these edits as deleted scenes, I want them in the body of the movie. There are a lot of great lines, and a lot of great character moments which I really did miss in the movie, though understood as he only had under two hours. 'Almost Famous' put out this type of set. The director's cut as I remember was about an hour longer (I could get up and check but it is late and I'm lazy). So what do you think? Will Universal spend the money to give us this gift? If you had to chose one or the other, which would you want? I just fell in love with some of the character moments that had to be removed for time, this is one of the reasons I loved Firefly so much. Every single character had his or her own distinctive voice, and we just didn't have the time in 119 minutes.

I'd definitely be down for an extended cut, although sometimes with those I end up being bothered by various changes, and then it's a tough decision on which one to buy (for example, Donnie Darko versus Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut).

With that said, it would seem like the perfect solution would be an extended cut via seamless branching, à la Fox's special edition Alien releases. That way everyone's happy.

One major difference between the process behind "Serenity" and "Almost Famous" is that Universal gave Joss complete control over the movie whereas the studio (can't remember which one) did meddle a bit with Cameron Crowe (check out last week's Entertainment Weekly for an article about it.) So while those scenes were cut, it was Joss's decision to cut them. In a nut-shell, the director's cut is what's playing in the theatre. I would love to see every cut scene, but I'd actually prefer to have them as an extra feature - Joss knew what he was doing when he cut them.

Joss has already stated, which has also been backed up by KRAD, that there will NOT be a directors cut of the film.

The reason for this is as he was involved with the editting process, SERENITY Is his direcotrs cut.

But of course all the deleted scenes will be put on either the 1st disc or the 2nd release (also comfirmed by Joss). This will include alot of Inaras talking scenes.

generally a directors cut happens when the director is not involved in the editning process for what ever reason, and the folks that do edit the theatrical realease muck up his/her vision of the film.
but since joss was very involved with the editing process this would techinically be the directors cut.

Yes, "director's cut" is a term that is bandied about way more than it should be since the advent of DVD. Technically, the theatrical cut of Serenity is Joss' director's cut.

However, that doesn't mean there couldn't be an extended cut if he wanted to give the fans something extra, instead of just putting the deleted scenes as a seperate feature on the DVD. The extended editions of The Lord of the Rings films, for example, are called "extended editions" for a reason - Peter Jackson has stated that they are not technically director's cuts.

As for seamless branching, Angeldove, it is where two cuts of the movie (generally, a theatrical cut and an extended cut) are made available on the same disc by having the DVD player jump around or skip different scenes depending on the cut. It probably sounds wonky at first, because you may be thinking to yourself, "My DVD player can't even handle a layer change without pausing!" However, in my experience, it really is seamless branching. It's very impressive.

This would let people have both versions of the film, and there'd be no need for undue fussin'.

I'm sorry but, how can there be any conflict between the original Donnie Darko and the Director's Cut. The Director's Cut explained so much and was A MILLION TIMES SUPERIOR. I don't think they even mentioned the phrase tangent universe in the original and that is VERY KEY as much of the movie takes place inside the tangent universe. LOTR extended cut was also way better, so I'll be voting for an extended cut DVD release for Serenity.

An extended cut DVD would be great! Without a doubt Serenity is far too short, it rushes through a lot. If they could add an hour back into it and make it a three hour movie it could be much better.

The LoTR extended DVDs are fantastic, we can only hope they will do the same thing with Serenity.

I ended up buying Donnie Darko: The Director's Cut, because on the whole, you're right, it is superior. However, parts of it are just slightly bothersome to me. The excerpts from Philosophy of Time Travel, while helpful for the narrative, were visually distracting to me. They didn't feel like pages out of book so much as pictures on a computer. It was just the aesthetic that bothered me. Also, I think the "Dreams" section right before "Mad World" starts playing just explains the obvious, and is kind of annoying.

I think they definitely add to the film, and are probably vital for people who don't feel like reading the pages seperately as a feature on the DVD or online, but, personally, I liked that experience of slowly uncovering those bits as I read about the film later.

Nope, no fancy equipment required. Just your DVD player and a set of eyes and ears.

My only experience with seamless branching is the Alien DVDs, but in those cases it prompts you at the beginning to pick which version of the film you want. If you pick the theatrical cut, the deleted scenes are available to view seperately under their own section of the menu.
