So, Jayne & River play critical roles in this movie. After seeing the show, Jayne's wanting the Tams off the ship is no real spoiler, but. . .

On the surface, his ill-advised murder attempt on River seems like it's been a long time coming, but take a moment to notice the scenes these two share.

In the bank heist, when River starts freaking out, Jayne doesn't just yell at/to her, he runs over, with more than a little genuine concern on his face.

Then, in the Maidenhead bar, note how he doesn't attack River so much as try to restrain and reason with her (after helping to knock down that guy that River didn't quite finish).

I think the murder attempt wasn't just Jayne taking things into his own hands --I think Jayne was actually starting to care about her (as he does about Kaylee, as seen in the pilot), and takes the berserker thing as a personal betrayal.

The idea of Jayne being a nicer guy than he puts on about isn't entirely alien, after all. And there is a bit of Jayne/River bonding going on in the show itself (on Ariel, then with River stealing the bread roll, which Jayne doesn't try to take back).

Y'know, it's generally agreed since the release of the BDM that if you post "Spoiler" in your title, you don't have to spoilerize the text. But, since you did...

It ain't a murder thing. Jayne was talking about "a little shuttle ride": He was probably going to stick her in the spare shuttle and set it on autopilot to fly her as far away as he could. Weren't planning no killing though. Hell, weren't even nobody paying him!

One thing I noticed the 2nd viewing of the movie. Before Jayne goes in the room after River, he's drinking and thinking. Before he finally decides what to do, we see River open her eyes wide and she is definitely reading something in her mind. The first time I saw the movie, I just assumed she was reading Jayne's intention and got in to posistion to defend herself.

The 2nd time I saw the movie it got me to thinkng, WHAT IF River's psychic ability allows her to plant a suggestion into someone's mind who isn't so bright? Could River have mentally suggested to Jayne to come after her, just so she could get out from the locked hatch?

I considered that too, I'd rather that not be the case, but I can't really present evidence either way.
