Serenity opens #1 in the UK! (taken from http://forum.cantstopthesignal.co.uk/showthread.php?p=10488 )

#1 new opener!

#1 movie of the weekend!

#1 gross per screen!

The only country to have growth from Friday to Saturday!

The UK becomes the first country to completely buck the trend, with Serenity soaring to the top of the charts.

WELL DONE EVERYBODY.

Press release and figures to follow shortly. We did good, we did real good.

Thank god for the UK (I'm half British so I think I can feel a tiny bit of pride in the fact that half of me is one of you... makes no sense, but I don't care I'm just that happy).

It makes me feel a little better after the US and Aus box office. The numbers in Australia started off well, but fell away really quickly... bad Australia.

I'm going to see it again soon (my 8th time and I'm still enjoying it and noticing little details that make me love it even more)

Congrats all! I've always said I'm on the wrong side of the pond! *hugs the UK Browncoats* Out of curiousity, does anyone have an estimate (or a final tally) for the numbers at the UK Box office (or an estimate for non-US sales thus far)?

The website for the details is:

But it hasn't been posted yet. Nathan said he expected it to make $100 billion - so maybe they are still counting the UK share of that hahahaha

I saw the pre-view in Birmingham, I saw the pre-release last thurdsay and I am taking 3 colleagues from work to see it tonight.

Glad to see that spreading the word is helping, or it could just be people going to see "A History of Violence" and needing to get their eyes cleaned by a proper film afterwards!!

YES!!!

This is a real "upper" for me; I go see Serenity yesterday, I think it's fXXXing brilliant (my brother was looking at me like I was a compulsively grinning mental patient on the journey home) I get on the 'net to talk it up and find everybody's being very fatalistic and solemn!

Anyway, I'll wave the Union Jack (yeah, the one that I don't own) and salute my countrymen (and ladies).

Now, I wonder how much stuff I can shift on e-Bay before this weekend, so I have the necessary funds for repeat viewings?

Woo hoo !!! I've been to see it twice, once with two peeps from work and once with my girlfriend. Off to see it again next weekend, and possibly during the week.

It's had really good reviews from the 'high brow' media too. "Front Row" (radio 4 arts program) loved it, said Joss should be writing all of this sort of movie. How right they are ! Even Mark Kermode of Radio 5 Live really liked it, mentioning just how passionate us fans are about the show. He even said judging by the film he couldn't understand why the show was cancelled.

I have to say, with the talk that Joss is regarded as a hero for producing a sci-fi blockbuster with very little money and from within Hollywood, with the hugely positive critical response, and with the good box office despite no "big star opening" we surely haven't heard the last of the signal :-D.

Way to go Joss !! And way to go us !!

(Maybe the DVD will have an extra 6 hours of footage in it too. Maybe Joss was really sneaky and snuck in a new season of episodes whilst shotting the movie ;-) ).

Huzzah for the UK! I feel proud to have contributed to this, even if I only saw it once this weekend (am planning to go again tomorrow - OMJ it was fabulous...) - on Saturday evening in a packed cinema in the centre of Oxford. Audience response good - laughs in all the right places, gasps in *the* right place, and a general mood of intense concentration on the screen.

A couple of my friends went to a Friday night showing in York; they told me afterwards that there was a round of applause at the end!

How defeatist. Wouldn't it be better to think that the UK is more enlightened than the USA (uh Flightplan sucks with writing only slightly better than Supercross) and Australia (Deuce Bigalow is their Jerry Lewis apparently).

Hmm seems more than a little unlikely. We are already in that downward spiral and a movie that should be making a lot less than it is Flightplan (and some others too), but the fact remains that we are idiots here.

Way to go Mr.Spoiltheparty.

I honestly do think that the fans over hear made a difference. It only took a few people (well maybe a lot) to make the Serenity stall at Memorabilia, which turned brought the film to many many peoples attention.

Just one example but I'm sure there's many more. Congrats to every UK fan who did their bit to help.

Hey I think we helped a lot. Even with good reviews this movie had very little publicity compared to stuff like the Wallace and Gromit movie which I expect will make a mint over the next few weeks.

Lots of Browncoats (here in the UK and abroad) have been encouraging friends/family who wouldn't normally go to see Serenity to check it out. I called my dad the other night to let him know how much I enjoyed the film (I've been hyping it a bit to my family lately) and he told me he already took my brother to see it earlier that evening and they both enjoyed it.

If the rest of my fellow UK fans got as many people to go as I did (17 at the last count)then I think we did a bloody good job and deserve congratulations!

Yes you are right.
The section of the press that helped
was the movie enthusiast segment.
Then of course also people are getting
media from other countries so they are
seeing clips and reading about it on a
global level these days.

Maybe this will now spill over into

What's funny is that I went to see it last night here in Chicago. For an 8:30 showing on a Sunday night, our theater was surprisingly full—I'd say at least 60%. With a turnout like that for the end of the weekend, I really expected the movie to have done better at the box office overall.

Thank God for the UK. At least there's one place that knows what's what.

So good to hear! I suppose it wouldn't be the same, with internet ticket sales and all the modern conveniences, but I was accidentally in London (and Paris) during the opening week of "The Wall". Four block long lines of kids with spiked hair and leathers waiting to buy tickets at every theater, all day long. Was it that cool? OK, without the spiked hair and leathers, but maybe someone in a Firefly t-shirt waving a pennant here and there? Was it amazing? Did you meet new peeps at the theater?

Quoted from cantstopthesignal.co.uk:

EXACT FIGURES

Weekend Total: £958,816
Screens: 355
Screen average: £2,701

The screen average is well above any of the competition.

There was apparently a 39% rise in viewers from Friday night to Saturday night, which completely throws off the opposite trend from places such as the USA.

Converted exactly to dollars, that's:

Weekend Total: $1,682,677.72
Screen Average: $4,739.58

Which is, what, just under four times greater than the USA's best day's screen average?

Yes, but we never claimed to be a drama with a cast of well known Hollywood actors who already have a hefty, well known resume. Serenity is a sci-fi movie with a cast of unknowns that was adapted from a cancelled TV show that didn't even last half a normal season. That in mind, I'd say it's done pretty well, whether or not the figures were huge.
