I had to go out of town the weekend that Serenity opened for a family function but while I was out of town, I goaded my sister into going with me to the movie. She is not much of a sci-fi/fantasy fan and tends to go for the bigger productions when she does watch sci-fi/fantasy (Star Wars, LoTR, Star Trek etc). When I first brought it up, she was not enthusiastic but after seeing the local critics rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 she gave it a go and she enjoyed it. She even laughed out loud at many of the jokes, especially in the bank toward the beginning ("Finally we can retire and give up this life of crime" ), which she said were what made it the most enjoyable. She said it was fun to watch and had some good action. I was very pleased that she did not hate it. HIGHLY doubt she would see it again, but at least she saw it once.

What are some of the reactions that everyone else got from their friends/family that they took to see the movie who were not Firefly fans to begin with?

My cousin liked it (saw it last Wednesday). In fact I was at their house again yesterday (Thanksgiving dinner), and she quoted a movie line, unbidden ("What was that?" in reference to things falling off one's vehicle).

My wife, who loves Firefly almost as much as I do, loved the film, and she even helped put the Big Damn Death in perspective for me. My daughter thought it was "OK," but since Hillary Duff or Raven weren't in it, I take that as a positive.

Me and my best friend took two of our friends to see it and both never seen the show. They both enjoyed it very much and one of them is going to buy the dvd set of the show. We're trying to get some more people to go and see it next week.

I took two people with me the first weekend that love the show and they both loved the movie. I took a newbie with me the second weekend. He had only seen The Pilot and The Train Job several months earlier and the first word he said when we left the theater was "awesome". My friend in Detroit that loved the series went to see the movie the second weekend and loved it. He said that he had been telling people that it was good and that they should go see it, and almost every one of them had no idea what movie he was talking about and the first question they would ask him was "Who's in it?". Not a good sign for the Serenity marketing department.

Can't wait to see it again this weekend. Just wish I had another newbie to take with me.

Ironically, despite my rather lukewarm response to the movie, everyone I have taken to see it, or convinced to go see it (and that's a right lot of people, mind) has thought it was awesome, sooo...

There ya have it.

The first time I went with my husband, who has never seen Firefly (I'm working on that!). He is very picky, but he is also very intelligent. He liked it a lot. Had no trouble understanding what was going on and found it easy to get into the relationships. He liked the acting and writing and, interestingly, said one of its strengths from his point of view was that it didn't try to make too big a spectacle of itself at the expense of character development. The second time, I took a friend who had seen only one episode of Firefly--Out of Gas. She genuinely enjoyed it and appreciated the humor. My third viewing was in the company of a friend who had seen the DVDs. Her reactions were fun to witness--laughed hard, gasped hard, and came out of the theatre on a high, determined to see it again. My own love for the BDM has just grown with each viewing, so it's nice to know the people I have taken (and sent) are enjoying it, too.

where to begin? Hmmmmmm. The first time i saw it i was disappointed i had put sooooooooo much hope into this movie and had expected sooooo much of it: (it didn't help when Wash died. That just totally condemed it for me!!!) Then i went and saw it again and ... it rocked.I was no longer disappointed. Quite the opposite in fact. I have taken sooooooooo many people to see this that i don't know if i will be able to remember all of their responses, but i'll try. opps i'll edit later and add them in but i have to go now!!!
