Hi gang. This is my first post on these boards. I just wanted to drop a link to a video I threw together this afternoon. I hope you like it.

I really do feel like I know these characters. It's astounding. Anyway, thanks for reading. :)

link does not work.

Edit.

It didn't work the first time but now it's fine. Excellent job.

You should do one for Kaylee and Simon too.

The video doesn't load on the site itself but when "link" is clicked the file opened into its own player and worked fine.

Jaron95, excellent work. I loved it. Can't wait to watch any others that you do.

Jaron95,

Very good job.. I really liked it. I know there is only so much you can do when pieceing together existing footage.

I especially liked the transitions to sepia tone effect. Simple but effective. And Mal and Inara's story fit the song very well. If this was intercut with video of the band playing this song in a Firefly setting... like one of the dive bars they go to, it would but just as good as most movie/song videos you see out there. Of course that would be "typical", I know there is more creative/interesting ways it could be done, but would require a lot more time/effort/money.

But overall.. great job.. especially for how quickly you put it together.. I would really like to see what you would do with more time..

Actually the more I watch it.. the more I like it.. even the song... It's very tragic and beautiful..

Smaug..

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Here's an alternate link. This one should work. Sorry for the trouble... I'm really not this bad at the Internet. ;) It's all Ourmedia's fault!

BALLAD

Oh, applause, applause, deafening applause. God I love the angst. ;) I quite enjoyed this, in caes you couldn't tell. Lovely choice of shots (especially the shot of Mal pushing her away, from the pilot, in conjunction with the line "if you're so strong, you might as well just do it alone." That was my fave.), beautiful use of sepia toning.

Anywho, loved it.

They weren't cows inside. They were waiting to be, but they forgot. Now they see the sky, and they remember what they are.

Wow, thanks guys! :)

If you have time, let me know what you DIDN'T like about it, so I can do better work in the future. :)

For technical details, I used FairUse - http://www.fairusewizard.com - to pull scenes from the DVD. It rips and caches the whole data stream and lets you choose to export whatever clips you like as XviD or DivX AVI's.

Then I used Windows Movie Maker to put it all together. I find it's pretty easy to use, but it has a lot of limitations. It gave me some real trouble in this video, especially with the Firefly logo (didn't come out how I pictured it in my head) and the scenes that fade to and from sepia tone. (Technical details: I had to make two copies of the same clip and set one to Sepia Tone. Then I faded them together, but I had to match up the starting frame of the second clip with the same frame in the original clip as close as I could. Still, it's rewarding to squeeze as much functionality as possible out of such a simple editor as WMM and see the end result come out fairly decent.)

As for editing tips & ideas, I got a lot of inspiration from the work done over at http://www.animemusicvideos.org. I've been downloading way too many files from that site lately, and the how-to guides are pretty insightful. "Phade's Guide to Good Anime Music Videos" has a lot of great info for beginners and experts alike.

Hope that helps!

Jaron95, I have been waiting for someone to make this video. I would have made it myself, but haven't the time, and anyway, I couldn't have made it better than this. I love the vid, I love Mal and Inara, and I love angsty love. So, again, bravo!

Thanks again for all the feedback, guys. :) My roommate wants me to make another one with Kid Rock's "Cowboy" song. I have some ideas for that one, probably going in more of a comedy direction, but I'll post a link once I get it done.

Ok I usually avoid these sort of things like the plague but I was in a kinda shippy mood and well I really loved this video :)

Haven't watched through the series for a while (people borrowing the DVDs and watching them!) and this reminded me of all those little moments.

Very well done, let's see one celebrating the action elements of the series.

"Let's be bad guys" would be a good title :D

Very shiny! But is there something wrong with me when I can idenitfy every episdoe from which the scenes come?

Also, thanks for the technical details that you supplied to the other poster. It's helpful to me also.

JARON95,

Let me state again that I really loved it.

So far.. thinking about it over the weekend.. I have a couple of ideas to toss your way.

One.. I thing it might be nice to actually have the title "Ballad of Mal and Inara" somehow at the beginning instead of the end. The rest.. song title.. your name.. etc. are fine at the end.. but it might work better to have the title somehow at the beginning.. and make the title "bigger".. I don't mean bigger in font size.. I mean bigger as in presence. Sort of like the illuminated Firefly logo.. actually I think it might be better to take firefly out altogether and replaced with some type of F/X of the title of this piece. Like if you could replicate the same f/x of the firefly logo.

Then secondly... I know it sort of "fit" the song.. but the way you ended it... seems very "final"... granted.. so did the song.. but I don't see the ballad of Mal and Inara as being "final" in anyway. Within Firefly.. The story of Mal and Inara.. is that of them comming together... no matter how long and tragic the path. So I believe in fitting with that.. there should be a glimmer of hope (even if very tiny) at the end of the ballad.. not one that lends more toward "tragic finality". If that makes any sense.

Anyway... just a couple thoughts of constructive critisim...

Smaug..

Thanks, Smaug. :)

Though I don't plan on going back and changing this video (mostly because I already deleted the source footage), I really like your ideas!

And thanks again to everyone else for the feedback!
