MITHERMAN

As of a week ago, I had no idea that this series existed. I heard about a recent movie release called Serenity and looked into it. It looked interesting, but it didn't seem like something I would see in the theatres, but rather wait till it came out on DVD. About a day later, a close friend asked if I had seen it, I said no. He then told me about a Futuristic Western series called Firefly. I thought it sounded kinda stupid at first, but I thought I'd look into it. Let me tell everyone, I am glad I did. This is now my most favorite series (canceled or not) of all time! I've watched each episode multiple times and I can't get enough of it! Why oh why did they have to cancel it?! Such a good series! I was so sad when I heard. I still need to see Serenity, just need to find some time, but I WILL see it! Thank you Josh Whedon for giving us this amazing show. I hope to see it return in the future.

I'm in exactly the same boat (ship?)

I was a big Buffy fan back in the day, but I didn't know or care about Firefly when it was on. When I started seeing all of these Serenity commercials, I wondered what they were talking about when they said "millions of fans can't be wrong." Of course I had no idea it had anything to do with Firefly.

A friend at work let me borrow the DVD set and told me to watch them before going to see the movie.

Fast forward a week. My wife and I just finished the DVD set. We're both hopelessly addicted to the show now... and there's nothing left to watch! Except the movie, which we plan to see tomorrow night. What a bizarre feeling.

I think Whedon's real gift is creating complex, compelling characters who you want to explore and you want to follow through a journey of self-discovery. So now we're both in love with these characters and ready for the journey, but there's no journey to take.

I'm almost upset I started watching it.

Prepare to hate everyone who hasn't seen Firefly or Serenity... In time, you'll lie awake at night, thinking about how this show could have ran for years, maybe even decades, if people would have just opened up enough to try it.

Oh, and when you pass your new found joy onto others (you will tell others, won't you), prepare for them to feel the exact same way as you do right now.

Long story short, I've never heard anyone say they didn't like Firefly; but I've heard plenty of people say they've never heard of it before...

Welcome to our 'verse. My story's not terribly different than yours. Like many here, I vaguely remember hearing of Firefly, but never saw an episode when it was on Fox. Same with Whedon's other creations, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel". I'd seen BtVS (the movie) with Kristy Swanson, Rutger Hauer, et al, and it was *cute* enough, but there was nothing in it to make me want to see a series based on it. I can even remember thinking, "What a stupid idea for a show..." when Fox brought it out.

Flash forward almost ten years. I was home during the day, taking a break from doing an engine and transmission rebuild on my car, trying to beat the late-June Texas heat, when I stumbled upon a Buffy episode on the FX network. I figured I'd have a look, since there was nothing else on. It didn't offend me with stupidity; in fact, I found the writing witty and smart. I watched a couple more episodes when I could, and before long I was hooked. Within about a week, I'd gotten my wife hooked on it as well. We decided we needed to see the show from the beginning, so I bought the first couple seasons on DVD, and we completely immersed ourselves in the "Buffyverse". Next, we tried "Angel", and got hooked on that.

A close friend told me that if we liked those shows, we should check out "Firefly", which he considered Joss Whedon's *best* work to date. I was intrigued enough to go out and buy the Firefly DVD set the next day. BOOM - hooked again!

By the time Serenity came out, I was ready. I was there at 10:00am for the first showing locally, and went back later that day for a second helping. And I'll likely go see it again. I've watched the DVDs three times, and will watch them again in the future. Needless to say, Joss Whedon is my new all-time favorite TV writer. And I'll at least give a fighting chance to anything David Greenwalt or Tim Minear are working on.

Mike

Grrrrr. Arrrgghh.

"Nothing here is what it seems. He is not the plucky hero, the Alliance isn't the evil empire.."
"And that's not incense."

I suspect that a lot of people are going to rent "Serenity" and think "Wow, I wish I'd seen that in the theater." Well, they didn't, and more's the loss for all of us. The Firefly/Serenity franchise is more or less over. The numbers aren't there and a good, solid movie will fall by the wayside.

I really enjoyed this movie; enough to pay to see it twice. The second showing was better; there were about thirty people in the theater and the audience gave the kind of feedback that you look for to enjoy the community that a good movie is supposed to engender. But there were thirty people in a theater designed to seat nearly ten times that number. Not good.

You really can't blame the studio; like any other business they have to make money and "Serenity" isn't doing the job. It is frankly amazing that the movie was made at all. I am very thankful that it was; it is a treat and should go down as one of the better if not classic SF films.

Bon Voyage, Serenity.

Welcome to the 'verse Mitherman.

Just like everyone else here, I've watched the DVD over and over again. To the point some in my family think I'm becoming obsessed. Well, I am.
There just doesn't seem to be anything else out there that matches the fun, excitement and quality of Firefly.... and I LOVE these characters.
So welcome to our joy and pain....
