Hello FireflyFans.com! This is my first post to this site and it comes at a desperate time. For Halloween I want to dress as Captain Mal Reynolds from the series Firefly and movie Serenity but am having difficulty finding all the pieces of Mal's wardrobe. Now my thinking is I can find the boots, shirt and pants easily. It's the coat that's difficult. I need to know the type of coat it is and what material its made of so I can go about buying it. If you could help me retrieve this data guys and gals I would indeed be grateful. Thanks. Until next time I am out!

I'm under the impression it's an patterned after an old civil war outfits. probably wool. but it looks thin in the shows, like suede. ask a clothing designer of one can be made if you brought in pics. suede jackets were in last year. second hand stores. good luck

AbbyShot.com has a coat they sell...it's kind of pricey.

I say try some department stores, this time of year you can find all kinds of coats on the racks. Most of us seem to think it's leather...but suede works...heck, i'd be happy with a dark brown microfiber or nylon trench coat....whatever i could get my hands on.

Good luck!

The style of the coat is known as a "duster". It's a long jacket, usually of leather, and was popular in the 19th century American West. It was designed to provide extra protection from the elements when riding on horseback.

If you tell the salesperson at your stores that you want a duster, they'll probably know what you mean.

Obviously, a real leather duster will be very expensive, but you might find a similar style coat in canvas or other fabric.

That is, of course, for the series coat.

The movie version has a little black shoulder-piece (looks like the pad from a luggage shoulder-strap, attached to the coat [there's no strap]).

Is it bad that I notice things like this at a glance?

There's always the Banana Republic topcoat that is a bit cheaper ($250) and pretty damn close.

Hey thanks for your help guys. So far things are not looking good for me being Mal for Halloween. For one, the coat they have on AbbyShot.com is an "authentic replica" of Mal's coat that's a "not made till you order it" coat. Also, I can't go that route to getting that particular coat anyway because the site AbbyShot.com said the deadline for Halloween orders for their apparel being that they are a "we won't make the piece of wardrobe till you order it" place of business was September 23rd.

About the Banana Republic coat. Looks similar, wrong color scheme so it wouldn't work. Other things to keep in mind are I won't bought the shirt, boots, gun holster or Mal's custom revolver (I say cause hey...have you ever seen that revolver anywhere else? I don't think so). Ballpark figures on all that merchandise run as follows: shirt (no matter the color): $40, boots: $120-$150, holster: $35, Mal's custom revolver (if they ever sell it on EBay or in a charity auction): minimum price $1500-1750!!! All it leads to being is one of the most expensive costumes I've ever priced. My dad's going to take me to a saddlery store tomorrow so there is still a little hope but we'll see. Not counting my chickens on this one that's for sure. Again, thanks anyway guys but it looks like this costume is well out of my price range (even though I wouldn't wear the gun in public anyway. I'd just have it on my wall as a collector's piece). Until next time I am out!

Hi if your a little Creative , why don't you get a picture of Mal's coat, then go to a cheap thrift store find an old trench coat and make you yourself a simular jacket its really not that hard you can also go to a fabric store and buy things to embellish it with and if the coats not brown you can also get a couple of bottles of Rit dye and change the color

The gun used in the movie looked like a gold plated Peacemaker. You could prolly pick up a non-functional peacemaker longbarrel on ebay for approx $60/shipping and then run a stain across it to give it a dull yellow color.

I have one for sale if you are interested.

I don't know if it's in your price range but it's there if you want to check it out. I'm just a girl trying to make it in the verse so it's not official merchandise.

Thanks,

ccor

I wouldn't really call Mal's coat a "duster." (not that I DO know what to call it... a "longcoat" maybe?) A duster is longer, almost ankle length. (Spike's leather coat in Buffy is a duster.)
