I just don't understand why Firefly was cancelled. It's a great show, and better than Angel and in some was and in the case of season 1 (in my opinion) Buffy. The movie was one of the best I've seen, well, in a very long time. And on the topic of the potential Season 2 of Firefly, there so many things to do. I think it'd be a crime if they didn't make it. I mean, there's so much that's been left unresolved. I want to see Simon and Kaylee's relationship shown at least a little more than just them kissing in pre-sex as in the end of Serenity. Inara and Malcolm still aren't together, and we still don't know anything about Book's past. Also they could show how the allience begins to crumble after it as revealed that they created the reavers. Again I say, it would be a crime if they didn't make another season.

ok
Let's look at the clues:
Great show, intriguing plot, deep and interesting characters, and a cast that could actually act.

Well, from my standpoint, the anser to your question is easy ...
THE PEOPLE AT FOX ARE MORONS!!!

Fox purposely sabotaged the show. It’s not the first time they’ve done something like that, they purposely sabotaged Family Guy, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and The Tick.

I believe it was only one person at fox that killed off firefly, and now fox has a 6 year contract for the rights of any televised firefly show... I think

We like to think that the world is filled with intelligent people who make decisions in rational ways using somewhat sane organizations to implement them. This is seldom true.

Fox could not have killed the show more effectively if the had tried, but that does not mean they did try.

A, hopefully, exaggerated synopsis of what might have happened:

I figure that someone said, "We could use a Joss Whedon show," and someone else heard that and said, "Give us a pilot." At that point someone, perhaps one of the first two someones, said, "Damn that sucks, screw off." Then another someone said, "It's got potential, give us another."

Now we finally get picked up and the time comes to advertise. The job of making the ads falls to either still another new someone or the one who said, "Damn this sucks." The amount of advertising time is decided by someone else entirely, who is doing cost-benefit based on Survivor figures instead of genre ones.

Finally the times the ads will play are determined by a last someone.

Or so you’d think. Someone else, who’s never even laid eyes on the show, looks at the ratings and cancels it failing to realize that a Joss Whedon show makes its money more in merchandizing (from what I hear) than from ratings.

(In other words someone who said, "We want a Whedon show," picked it up and someone who said, "We don’t want a Whedon show," was left to decide whether or not to keep it.)

Which someone do you blame?
