Ditto Chris - There are a number of posters besides Zoid that I "grew up with" on this board that I've not heard from since Serenity's opening - wondering if their silence speaks volumes... (see, that's me being all trixie like, trying to get them to come foward...). Guess they hated the movie...

This is weird. I was thinking the same thing earlier today. I hope he's okay. I miss his comments too. I was wondering that since he's given a fair amount of personal info in his posts if might be possible to go through the archives and find another way to try and contact him.

Ah, I remember Zoid from my long days as a lurker here. May never have spoken to him directly, but I eavesdropped on many a fine word of his. Really shaped my view of the site and the fandom (in a good way). Been wondering where he'd gotten to as well. It feels weird without him--and, as I said, I wasn't even a member when he was around.

Glad to see Zoid is still around. I was wondering about him the other day as he has not really been posting anything for awhile lately.

ZOID

Happy All Hallows Day!

Yes, I've been missing you all, too. But frankly, as I told Mmmm!-a-licious in an off-site message, I've been a little overwhelmed by the 'new blood' on FFFn. Likewise, as the movie approached and then premiered, there were a lot of topics which I felt were unappealing, at best, so I decided not to comment...

But, I've always known I would come back, once the furor died down a little and some of our 'fair weather friends' buggered off to haunt the next 'latest thing' in entertainment. If that sounds a little harsh, I'll not apologize for it, because that's precisely how I mean it to sound. While there are undoubtedly some new converts to the 'verse, not all of them appear to be neighborly, and I've got no use for them. There are quite a few 'rookies' (or 'FNGs' for us mil vets) who are genuinely in love with our favorite story, and I welcome them. But the thinly disguised trolls and naysayers -- who are numerous on this and other Firefly sites -- can all go take a long walk off a short pier, imo.

As far as the movie is concerned, here is my evaluation:

Deeply disturbing. It was a thrilling roller coaster ride. I'm not sure that's a good thing; but it was, regardless my personal reservations. I walked out of the theatre feeling disoriented and disturbed, a sensation that took the better part of an hour to dispel.

I think the acting was fine throughout. I think the cinematic quality was fine, the storytelling was great. I think the movie gets better with repeat viewings, although for me, the third viewing got a little stale. I will buy several copies of the DVD for self, friends and family when it comes out in December 05. (HINT: If you're on my Christmas list, this may be somewhat of a spoiler.)

It's Joss' story and he can kill anyone he wants. I don't have a problem with that. But I do think he made a major strategic error killing Wash. (NB: If anyone is spoiled by that, why haven't you seen it in the theatre, you cur!?!) While Wash's death moved the conflict along and aided in the 'anyone can die' aspect, ya-da, ya-da, I think his death resulted in a +30% decrease in ticket sales at the box office, perhaps killing the prospect of becoming a groundswell blockbuster. That's the reality, in my estimation. JW could've killed off almost anybody else in proving his mastery of fictional life and death, and the audience might've taken it somewhat in stride. But Tudyk's 'death' -- and consequent removal from the acting dynamic -- was unacceptable. Even people who never saw the series were disappointed by his untimely demise. That it ruins one of my favorite aspects of the series -- the very true-to-life depiction of a committed marriage -- is beside the point, as far as I'm concerned. I'm just concerned that JW may have destroyed a promising fictional universe with this one misconsidered stroke of his pen. I consider it a a major blunder in his storytelling, in that he may well not get a chance to continue the story as a result of this one contrivance...

I, for my part, hope JW does get to tell us more Firefly stories. Preferably, something a little less frenetic, next time, and a little more character- and relationship-driven. That was the attraction of the original series, for me. There were moments of action, but the show's beauty stemmed from its meaningful and real personal interactions. Frankly, Kaylee just seemed 'needy' in the movie (instead of exhibiting her frontier strength and maternal instinct that we saw on the series), and of course we'll never get closure on Book (who seemed like a supernumerary in the picture, as well).

But with all that said, yes, I did enjoy the movie. I know it doesn't particularly sound like it, based on my above comments. But, with all the utter dreck passing for entertainment these days, Serenity was a breath of fresh air for the fans of good, non-formulaic storytelling. I'll restate it: Serenity was good storytelling, well-shot, -realized and -acted; but JW made a crucial mistake, solely from the standpoint of getting to tell more of the story in the form of future movies. In my opinion...

In closing, I'll still keep lurking for posts of substance, and posting when I feel I have something to add. And when the server load reduces hereabouts, and we're all waiting and praying for "Shadow" (my fantasy title for the sequel) for the next 2-3 years, I'll come back full-time and post my off-the-wall speculations, which y'all have all come to know and love.

There's just no place for my particular brand of "cul-de-sac"-y thinking, in the current environment. There are too many self-proclaimed 'authorities' on Firefly/JW/Serenity inhabiting the site to engage in fictional speculation, or to have fun fantasizing out-of-the-box; too many 'concretists' waiting in the shadows to poke holes in playful thinking...

Thanks for asking after me, chrisisall. I assure you all is as well with me as can be, considering the state of the world as a whole. I hope y'all are faring well, too.

Yours Truantly,

zoid

P.S.
Still looking for an MP3 of the final accoustic rendition of "Ballad of Serenity" as played at the end of the credits in the BDM (great dobro in that). It's not on the soundtrack album (*curses semi-subvocally*). It's beautiful and just the right length for a cell ringer. Help would be greatly appreciated, but I may have to wait for the DVD, upon which it will hopefully appear.

"FNGs"! ROFLMAO! Haven't heard that one in awhile.

Glad to see you still around Zoid. I was getting worried about you buddy.

I know what you mean about being overwhelmed by all of the new people & the flood of posts since the BDM premiered. It does a good deal of time to sort through all the new traffic & read new threads. I have not found much to reply to of late & have not posted as much as I generally do.

Keep flyin' Zoid. See you around the board.

Well, zoid, if you were my neighbour I'd try to convince you of the merits of a hearty German stout. Even if I failed on that score, the yackin' would be worth the tryin'. A win in my book.

Be well brother. Post, or not, as you will. Your contributions to this site have never failed to either inform or amuse. To entertain, as it were. You don't owe anything to anyone on this funky little board. Maybe the reverse is closer to the truth of the matter, I dunno.

Always with the respect for those who at least try to think , tempered with humour if they fail or sadness if they don't try: never anger. A good philosophical foundation for bringing up the kiddies. Me, I'm glad to have met ya here, and thank you for what you've shared in this brief time.

Damn, time for a joke! Um, whaddya call a musical fish?

HELL'S KITTEN

This is odd. I was just wondering what happened to Zoid this weekend. Then I find this thread and Zoid. Yay!

As weird as this is for me to type - owing to the facts that I don't actually know you and have only rarely replied to your posts - I'm gonna type it anyway: I've missed you around here, too, Zoid. Really. Glad you're still with us.

(And now that we've found Zoid, where's Succatash, Badgershat, Ebo, Gunhand, and all the others {FOGs?} whose posts I always enjoyed lurking around?)

...

I'd swear I saw Tash logged in this very day - though I was lurking whilst at work and suffering from a heavy head cold to boot.

I believe you're right, we didn't come out of the theatre with that jubilant, elated feeling that we came out of Star Wars with, and that definitly killed it for the younger fans and folks not prepared for the grief. But knowing Joss' other work, I expected at least one major character to pass.
He took a different road than I would've, and at least it was, well...er, different.
I mean, I still have a hard time believing all the people who survived in the end of Jedi- although, they did kill that poor Ewok...*snif*

Later Zoid.

I know where Tash is. I know where Badger is. I know where Ebo is. Gunhand, sadly, is MIA. As for all the other FOGs, sigh, I wish I knew. I learned so many things while I sat by their knees and listened to their tales of purplebellies, futuristic dinosaur parks, and burned shadows.
