Having just discovered Firefly, I am so ashamed of myself that I didn't watch while it was on air! Just a tiny question for all you Firely Experts...I just finshed watching the whole series, but haven't seen Serenity yet and just wondered if we find out in the movie what exactly the supposed "suicide kit" Inara picks up in the pilot actually is? I don't wanna know "what" it is, just if we get an explanation. I honestly wouldn't have given a second thought about that scene unless Joss hadn't mentioned it in the commentary and now I can't get it out of my head! I has assumed she was planning suicide if the Reaver's came aboard! Thanks so much!

No that's not particularly addressed in the film. The only explanation is what Joss explained in the commentary. I agree with you though. I interpreted it as she would commit suicide if the Reavers came on board.

Hope you get to see Serenity soon! Welcome to the Browncoats!

Thanks for the info ev1! I agree about Joss and his secrets. Just when I think I have his style of storytelling all figured out, a new curve or secret pops right up! As a huge Buffy and Angel fan, I can't for the life of me figure out why I just got around to Firefly and I can't wait to see Serenity. I do think I should do some sort of penance at the Church of Whedon for waiting this long and then I can be worthy of being a Browncoat! Ha! :)

Welcome Daisy! You'll find us to be a friendly bunch.

As for the black syringe, one of the most popular theories is the "suicide kit", but it's not the only one. I hope Joss lets us in on the secret eventually...

New to Serentity and Firefly too. My new box set is currently lent out but I found the gag reel easily when I watched the DVD. It's on the 4th DVD under special features. I just wish it had been longer!

Welcome all the new people!!

I found Firefly in May this year and, like everyone else, can't believe I let it go for so long.

That's the whole point, it *is* longer. On the internet, there's an extended gag reel available which has about four times as much stuff as the one you get on your DVDs.

It's well worth the download.

I thought in the commentary Joss made it pretty clear it was NOT a suicide kit ?
But I'm quessing we'll have to wait until the Big Damn Sequel for this one....
or maybe the next set of comic books.

There are still a LOT of stories to tell!

Anyway, I hope by now you have seen 'Serenity'
and the comic books
and the River Tam videos (mentioned in my signiture)

Yes, Joss said in the commentary that it was not a suicide kit.

And I don't understand why people here seem to think that the "obvious" answer is the right one. This is Joss we're talking about - the master of the misdirect. The obvious answer is almost always going to be the wrong one.

As for the kit, I can offer at last one theory. Prostitution isn't all glitz, glamour, and lesbian backrubs. Some people have dark urges - they like their sex rough and violent. It may sometimes be necessary for companions to be subjected to such urges, especially if the client is particularly wealthy and powerful. A drug that dulls pain and detaches the senses would come in handy in such a situation, as it would if one were about to be violently raped and eaten alive by reavers.

That might be a good theory, except that the companion chooses the client, not the other way around. If the p[rospective client is into something that the companion would find uncomfortable, she just doesn't contract with him.
(Am I a huge geek for talking like it's all real?)

I'm sure there are people rich and powerful enough that even the companions dare not refuse them. Maybe it's something only a few companions get drawn into, and maybe Inara was one of them. Maybe that's her secret, and what she was trying to put behind her when she joined Serenity.

Or maybe this is something fairly common in the companion world, a dark underside that is never talked about. And that is what Inara wanted to get away from.

I just find it hard to believe that Joss would have put a sex worker in the series without ever wanting to explore the darker side of the sex trade. I mean we have a preacher whose background makes him familar with automatic weapons, covert operations, and underworld crime, so it is really a stretch to have a prostitute whose backstory includes drugs and physical abuse?

Aland: I had a similar thought...
there has been speculation that Inara might be dying of something,
but I also thought she might be running from something
(like some powerful guy in the Parliment...who was abusive and scary, so she ran)

Personally I'm hoping the sequel will give us Inara's story
and Mal and Inara's romance...
but of course if that happens then I'm fear we may be in for Inara's painful and horrible death
(just sayin)
