I am a new fan, just started watching Firefly on the SciFi channel. I remember when it came out, and thought I missed the first episode (in those sad days before I had TiVO) then Fox pre-empted it for a long time so I thought maybe it had been a miniseries, not a "real" series. Now I'm reading on the forums that Fox actually aired the pilot last? Is this true? Maybe that's why I thought I missed the first episode. Why would a network air a pilot last?

Near as medical science can tell, it's because the executives at Fox have their heads so far up their collective arses ... lack of oxygen results in stooopid decisions.

Why would any network wish to air a 2-hour pilot that masterfully sets up an entire 'verse and the characters who inhabit it? Jeeze, what do you think this is ... expensive and arty? Frak, we're Fox, home of "The Smallest Bachelor Marries a Millionaire Swan and Wife Swaps with Some Whore Named Paris Hilton"

Real reason: Some dumbass executive decided that "Serenity" wasn't action-y enough and demanded a new action-packed pilot. This was on Friday afternoon. "Train Job" was written over the weekend and turned in on Monday as the new pilot. Hence the rushed exposition feel about it.

This executive's brain is in the witness protection program, so don't tell anyone.

We're so happy that SciFi is airing Firefly; however, I must advise you to be on your merry and get to a DVD store and buy the boxed set.

The show is being aired on SciFi in pan & scan. *shudder*. The DVD is presented in wide screen (the way God Joss intended) and you get all kinds of nifty special features.

Once you've watched them all twice, you should go and watch with commentary. Then watch with subtitles so you can catch every word - even the subtitle mistakes i.e., "you're a rabbit, Mal".

After seeing them with commentary and subtitles, go back and watch again. By your fifth viewing ... you'll be reciting lines in your sleep.

Welcome to the happy family.

GIANTEVILHEAD

Fox does that a lot. They aired The Tick out of order, they aired Andy Richter Controls the Universe out of order, they aired Futurama out of order, I think they aired Family Guy out of order in its first run, they're also airing the new Family Guy out of order.

Gotta go with knibblet on this one. I remember watching the entire series, saying to myself, "Now why don't they put that crazy girl in a hospital or something?" and "What the hell are they doing with a preacher and a prostitute on the same ship?" and "What's with the Chinese?"

Then they showed "Serenity" (the episode) and it all became so clear.

The stupid, stupid bastards at Fox

When I first read this, I read it as:
"This executive's brain is in the witLESS protection program, so don't tell anyone."
Only one letter makes all the difference, and a seemingly more accurate statement.

Yeah they made bad decisions, Imagine Prison Break or 24 out of order.
